Universal Role of Combined Symmetry for the Protection of the Dirac Cone in Antiferromagnetic Topological Insulators

Antiferromagnetic topological insulators (AF TIs) are predicted to exhibit exotic physical properties such as gigantic optical and topological magnetoelectric responses. While a key to achieving such phenomena relies on how to break the symmetry protecting the Dirac-cone surface state (SS) and acquire the mass of Dirac fermions, the mechanism has yet to be clarified. To address this issue, we carried out micro-focused angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy for GdBi hosting the type-II AF order, and uncovered the stripe-type 2$\times$1 reconstruction of the Fermi surface associated with the AF band folding. Intriguingly, in contrast to NdBi with the type-I AF order displaying the surface-selective Dirac-fermion mass, GdBi shows massless behavior irrespective of AF domains due to the robust topological protection. These results strongly suggest a crucial role of the ThetaTD (time-reversal and translational) symmetry to create the Dirac-fermion mass in AF TIs.

Variation of Pressure-Induced Valence Transition with Approximation Degree in Yb-Based Quasicrystalline Approximants

We have synthesized new Tsai-type Yb-based intermediate-valence approximant crystals (ACs) with different degree of approximation to quasicrystal, Zn--Au--Yb 1/1 and 2/1 AC, and studied the external pressure effect on their Yb mean-valence $ν$. Whereas 1/1 AC distinctly exhibits a first-order-like jump in $ν$ at a transition pressure $P_{\rm v}$, 2/1 AC only shows an indistinct anomaly at $P_{\rm v}$. We have also studied the pressure dependence of the $ν$ of Au--Al--Yb 1/1 AC, which is a prototypal AC exhibiting pressure-induced quantum criticality. It shows a continuous valence anomaly at a critical pressure $P_{\rm c}$ where the magnetic susceptibility diverges toward zero temperature, in contrast to the valence jump in the Zn--Au--Yb 1/1 AC. These results are discussed based on a theoretical model of quantum critical valence fluctuation.

Helical Ordering of Spin Trimers in a Distorted Kagome Lattice of Gd$_3$Ru$_4$Al$_{12}$ Studied by Resonant X-ray Diffraction

Successive magnetic phase transitions at $T_1$=17.5 K and $T_2$=18.5 K in Gd$_3$Ru$_4$Al$_{12}$, with a distorted kagome lattice of Gd ions, is studied using resonant X-ray diffraction with polarization analysis. It has been suggested that in this compound the $S=7/2$ spins on the nearest-neighbor Gd-triangle form a ferromagnetic trimer and the Gd lattice can be effectively considered as an antiferromagnetic triangular lattice of $S=21/2$ spin trimers [S. Nakamura et al., Phys. Rev. B 98, 054410 (2018)]. We show that the magnetic order in this system is described by an incommensurate wave vector $q$~(0.27, 0, 0), which varies slightly with temperature. In the low temperature phase below $T_1$, the experimental results are well explained by considering that the spin trimers form a helical order with both the $c$-axis and $c$-plane components. In the intermediate phase above $T_1$, the $c$-axis component vanishes, resulting in a sinusoical structure within the $c$-plane. The sinusoidal-helical transition at $T_1$ can be regarded as an ordering of chiral degree of freedom, which is degenerate in the intermediate phase.

Pressure-Temperature Phase Diagram of Golden SmS

We measured the thermal expansion of the valence fluctuating phase of SmS (golden SmS) to construct a pressure vs temperature phase diagram. The obtained phase diagram is characterized by three lines. One is a crossover line that divides the paramagnetic phase into two regions. The other two lines correspond to a second-order Neel transition and a first-order Neel transition. The crossover line appears to emerge from a tricritical point that separates the first-order Neel transition from the second-order one. We argue that a valence jump occurs at the border of antiferromagnetism.
