What at all is the Higgs of the Standard model and what is the origin of families?

The standard model of the elementary particles is built on several assumptions. The Higgs is assumed to be a scalar, a boson, with the charges of a fermion (in the fundamental representations of the charge groups). No explanation is offered for the existence of families of fermions -- quarks and leptons-- for the charges of these family members, for the appearance of the Yukawas which take care of fermion properties. The theory explaining the origin of families predicts that several scalar fields with the boson kind of the charges (in the adjoint representations of the charge groups) manifest effectively at low energies as the Higgs and the Yukawas.

Particular boundary condition ensures that a fermion in d=1+5, compactified on a finite disk, manifests in d=1+3 as massless spinor with a charge 1/2, mass protected and chirally coupled to the gauge field

The genuine Kaluza-Klein-like theories--with no fields in addition to gravity--have difficulties with the existence of massless spinors after the compactification of some space dimensions \cite{witten}. We proposed in previous paper a boundary condition for spinors in d=(1+5) compactified on a flat disk that ensures masslessness of spinors (with all positive half integer charges) in d=(1+3) as well as their chiral coupling to the corresponding background gauge gravitational field. In this paper we study the same toy model, proposing a boundary condition allowing a massless spinor of one handedness and only one charge (1/2) and infinitely many massive spinors of the same charge, allowing disc to be curved. We define the operator of momentum to be Hermitean on the vector space of spinor states--the solutions on a disc with the boundary.

Fermions with no fundamental charges call for extra dimensions

We call attention to that if assuming no conserved charges in the fundamental theory with fermions, which carry only a spin and interact with only the gravity, the dimensions $4, 12, 20,.....,$ as well as all odd dimensions, are excluded under the requirement of mass protection. If more than one family is required, than only dimensions d=2 (mod 4) remains as acceptable, since then other by 4 devisable dimensions are excluded.

On the origin of families of fermions and their mass matrices

We are proposing a new way of describing families of quarks and leptons, using the approach unifying all the internal degrees of freedom, proposed by one of us. Spinors, living in d(=1+13)-dimensional space, carry in this approach only the spin and interact with only the gravity through vielbeins and two kinds of the spin connection fields - the gauge fields of the Poincare group and the second kind of the Clifford algebra objects. All the quarks and the leptons of one family appear in one Weyl representation of a chosen handedness of the Lorentz group, if analyzed with respect to the Standard model gauge groups: the right handed (with respect to SO(1,3)) weak chargeless quarks and leptons and the left handed weak charged quark and leptons. A part of the starting Lagrange density of a Weyl spinor in d=1+13 transforms right handed quarks and leptons into left handed quarks and leptons manifesting as the Yukawa couplings of the Standard model. The second kind of Clifford algebra objects generates families and contributes to diagonal and off diagonal Yukawa couplings. The approach predicts an even number of families, treating leptons and quarks equivalently. In this paper we investigate within this approach the appearance of the Yukawa couplings within one family of quarks and leptons as well as among the families (without assuming any Higgs fields). We present the mass matrices for four families and investigate whether our way of generating families might explain the origin of families of quarks and leptons as well as their observed properties - the masses and the mixing matrices. Numerical results are presented in the paper following this one.
