On the Invalidity of Lemma 2.5 in our previous work on the Powell Conjecture

In our previous version entitled ``The reducing sphere complexes for the 3-sphere are connected: a proof of the Powell Conjecture", we claimed to prove the Powell Conjecture, which states that the Goeritz group of the genus-$g$ Heegaard splitting of the 3-sphere is finitely generated for any non-negative integer $g$. However, we have found a critical error in the proof of Lemma 2.5 in that version. In this note, we prove that the statement of Lemma 2.5 does not hold in general. This invalidates a key step in our argument and leaves the proof of the Powell Conjecture incomplete. Consequently, the Powell Conjecture remains an open problem in the case of $g \geq 4$.

Generalized torsion elements in the fundamental groups of 3-manifolds obtained by the 0-surgeries along some double twist knots

We consider the 3-manifold obtained by the 0-surgery along a double twist knot. We construct a candidate for a generalized torsion element in the fundamental group of the surged manifold, and see that there exists the cases where the candidate is actually a generalized torsion element. For a proof, we use the JSJ-decomposition of the surged manifold. We also prove that the fundamental group of the 3-manifold obtained from the 0-surgery along a double twist knot is bi-orderable if and only if it admits no generalized torsion elements. We also list some examples of the surged manifolds whose fundamental groups admit generalized torsion elements.

The subgroup of the Goeritz group of the Heegaard splitting induced by an openbook decomposition consisting of elements preserving the binding

When a 3-manifold admits an openbook decomposition, we get a Heegaard splitting by thickening a page. This splitting surface has a special multi curves coming from the binding. In this paper, we consider the subgroup of the Goeritz group of this Heegaard splitting, which is the mapping class group of the 3-manifold preserving the given Heegaard splitting, consisting of elements preserving the binding. This subgroup turned out to be the quotient of the subgroup of the orientation preserving mapping class group consisting of elements commuting with the monodromy by the subgroup generated by the Dehn twists along the boundary curves. We also get a criterion for the existence of an element of the Goeritz group which fixes the binding as a set and reverses the orientation. At last, we give some example of computation of a Goeritz group.

The Goeritz group of a Heegaard splitting of genus two of a Seifert manifold whose base orbifold is sphere with three exceptional points of sufficiently complex coefficients

In this paper, we add examples to Goeritz groups, the mapping class groups of given Heegaard splittings of 3-manifolds. We focus on a Heegaard splitting of genus two of a Seifert manifold whose base orbifold is sphere with three exceptional points of sufficiently complex coefficients, where "sufficiently complex" means that every surgery coefficient p_{l} over q_{l} of each exceptional fiber (in a surgery description) satisfies that q_{l} is congruent to neither +1 or -1 modulo p_{l}.

Generalized torsions in once punctured torus bundles

A generalized torsion in a group, an non-trivial element such that some products of its conjugates is the identity. This is an obstruction for a group being bi-orderable. Though it is known that there is a non bi-orderable group without generalized torsions, it is conjectured that 3-manifold groups without generalized torsions are bi-orderable. In this paper, we find generalized torsions in the fundamental groups of once punctured torus bundles which are not bi-orderable. Our result contains a generalized torsion in a tunnel number two hyperbolic once punctured torus bundle.

The existence of homologically fibered links and solutions of some equations

There is one generalization of fibered links in 3-manifolds, called homologically fibered links. It is known that the existence of homologically fibered links whose fiber surface has a given homeomorphic type is determined by the first homology group and its torsion linking form of the ambient 3-manifold. In this paper, we interpret the existence of homologically fibered links with that of a solution of some equation, in terms of the first homology group and its torsion linking form or a surgery diagram of the ambient manifold. As an application, we compute the ${\rm hc}(\cdot)$, defined through homologically fibered knots, for 3-manifolds whose torsion linkng forms represent a generator of linkings.

Lens spaces which are realizable as closures of homology cobordisms over planar surfaces

We determine the condition on a given lens space having a realization as a closure of homology cobordism over a planar surface with a given number of boundary components. As a corollary, we see that every lens space is represented as a closure of homology cobordism over a planar surface with three boundary components. In the proof of this corollary, we use Chebotarev density theorem.

Genus one fibered knots in 3-manifolds with reducible genus two Heegaard splittings

We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a simple closed curve on the boundary of a genus two handlebody to decompose the handlebody into (torus with one boundary component times [0,1]. We use this condition to decide whether a simple closed curve on a genus two Heegaard surface is a GOF-knot (genus one fibered knot) which induces the Heegaard splitting. By using this, we determine the number and the positions with respect to the Heegaard splittings of GOF-knots in the 3-manifolds with reducible genus two Heegaard splittings. This is another proof of results of Morimoto and Baker.
