Impact of Preprocessing on Neural Network-Based RSS/AoA Positioning

Hybrid received signal strength (RSS)-angle of arrival (AoA)-based positioning offers low-cost distance estimation and high-resolution angular measurements. Still, it comes at a cost of inherent nonlinearities, geometry-dependent noise, and suboptimal weighting in conventional linear estimators that might limit accuracy. In this paper, we propose a neural network-based approach using a multilayer perceptron (MLP) to directly map RSS-AoA measurements to 3D positions, capturing nonlinear relationships that are difficult to model with traditional methods. We evaluate the impact of input representation by comparing networks trained on raw measurements versus preprocessed features derived from a linearization method. Simulation results show that the learning-based approach consistently outperforms existing linear methods under RSS noise across all noise levels, and matches or surpasses state-of-the-art performance under increasing AoA noise. Furthermore, preprocessing measurements using the linearization method provides a clear advantage over raw data, demonstrating the benefit of geometry-aware feature extraction.

Advanced Channel Decomposition Techniques in OTFS: A GSVD Approach for Multi-User Downlink

In this paper, we propose a multi-user downlink system for two users based on the orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation scheme. The design leverages the generalized singular value decomposition (GSVD) of the channels between the base station and the two users, applying precoding and detection matrices based on the right and left singular vectors, respectively. We derive the analytical expressions for three scenarios and present the corresponding simulation results. These results demonstrate that, in terms of bit error rate (BER), the proposed system outperforms the conventional multi-user OTFS system in two scenarios when using minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalizers or precoder, both for perfect channel state information and for a scenario with channel estimation errors. In the third scenario, the design is equivalent to zero-forcing (ZF) precoding at the transmitter.

Joint Active and Passive Beamforming for RIS-aided MIMO Communications with Low-Resolution Phase Shifts

Practical hardware limitations often impose a reduced number of available phase shifts at the elements of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). Most works often assume continuous phase-shits at the RIS elements for the transmit and passive beamforming optimization, which can lead to substantial performance loss. Therefore, to harvest the gains of RIS-assisted multi-stream multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications under realistic phase shifts, this letter proposes a problem formulation for the maximization of the achievable rate over the transmit precoder and RIS elements, which avoids an explicit discrete constraint while still incorporating its effect. To efficiently tackle the resulting problem when considering large arrays and RIS panels, an iterative algorithm is derived which comprises a sequence of simple projections. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed design can be very effective, especially with low-resolution phase-shifts.

Optimizing the Achievable Rate in MIMO Systems Assisted by Multiple Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

In recent years there has been a growing interest in reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) as enablers for the realization of smart radio propagation environments which can provide performance improvements with low energy consumption in future wireless networks. However, to reap the potential gains of RIS it is crucial to jointly design both the transmit precoder and the phases of the RIS elements. Within this context, in this paper we study the use of multiple RIS panels in a parallel or multi-hop configuration with the aim of assisting a multi-stream multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication. To solve the nonconvex joint optimization problem of the precoder and RIS elements targeted at maximizing the achievable rate, we propose an iterative algorithm based on the monotone accelerated proximal gradient (mAPG) method which includes an extrapolation step for improving the convergence speed and monitoring variables for ensuring sufficient descent of the algorithm. Based on the sufficient descent property we then present a detailed convergence analysis of the algorithm which includes expressions for the step size. Simulation results in different scenarios show that, besides being effective, the proposed approach can often achieve higher rates than other benchmarked schemes.

A Generalized Space-Frequency Index Modulation Scheme for Downlink MIMO Transmissions with Improved Diversity

Multidimensional Index Modulations (IM) are a novel alternative to conventional modulations which can bring considerable benefits for future wireless networks. Within this scope, in this paper we present a new scheme, named as Precoding-aided Transmitter side Generalized Space-Frequency Index Modulation (PT-GSFIM), where part of the information bits select the active antennas and subcarriers which then carry amplitude and phase modulated symbols. The proposed scheme is designed for multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) scenarios and incorporates a precoder which removes multiuser interference (MUI) at the receivers. Furthermore, the proposed PT-GSFIM also integrates signal space diversity (SSD) techniques for tackling the typical poor performance of uncoded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based schemes. By combining complex rotation matrices (CRM) and subcarrier-level interleaving, PT-GSFIM can exploit the inherent diversity in frequency selective channels and improve the performance without additional power or bandwidth. To support reliable detection of the multidimensional PT-GSFIM we also propose three different detection algorithms which can provide different tradeoffs between performance and complexity. Simulation results shows that proposed PT-GSFIM scheme, can provide significant gains over conventional MU-MIMO and GSM schemes.

Low Complexity Hybrid Precoding Designs for Multiuser mmWave/THz Ultra Massive MIMO Systems

Millimeter-wave and terahertz technologies have been attracting attention from the wireless research community since they can offer large underutilized bandwidths which can enable the support of ultra-high-speed connections in future wireless communication systems. While the high signal attenuation occurring at these frequencies requires the adoption of very large (or the so-called ultra-massive) antenna arrays, in order to accomplish low complexity and low power consumption, hybrid analog/digital designs must be adopted. In this paper we present a hybrid design algorithm suitable for both mmWave and THz multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, which comprises separate computation steps for the digital precoder, analog precoder and multiuser interference mitigation. The design can also incorporate different analog architectures such as phase shifters, switches and inverters, antenna selection and so on. Furthermore, it is also applicable for different structures namely, fully connected, arrays of subarrays (AoSA) and dynamic arrays of subarrays (DAoSA), making it suitable for the support of ultra-massive MIMO (UM-MIMO) in severely hardware constrained THz systems. We will show that, by using the proposed approach, it is possible to achieve good trade-offs between spectral efficiency and simplified implementation, even as the number of users and data streams increases.)

A Precoding Aided Space Domain Index Modulation Scheme for Downlink Multiuser MIMO Systems

In this correspondence, we propose a space domain index modulation (IM) scheme for the downlink of multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems. Instead of the most common approach where spatial bits select active receiver antennas, in the presented scheme the spatial information is mapped onto the transmitter side. This allows IM to better exploit large dimensional antenna settings which are typically easier to deploy at the base station. In order to mitigate inter-user interference and allow single user detection, a precoder is adopted at the BS. Furthermore two alternative enhanced signal construction methods are proposed for minimizing the transmitted power or enable an implementation with a reduced number of RF chains. Simulation results for different scenarios show that the proposed approach can be an attractive alternative to conventional precoded MU-MIMO.

Frequency Domain Equalization for Single and Multiuser Generalized Spatial Modulation Systems in Time Dispersive Channels

In this letter, a low-complexity iterative detector with frequency domain equalization is proposed for generalized spatial modulation (GSM) aided single carrier (SC) transmissions operating in frequency selective channels. The detector comprises three main separate tasks namely, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) equalization, active antenna detection and symbol wise demodulation. This approach makes the detector suitable for a broad range of MIMO configurations, which includes single-user and multiuser scenarios, as well as arbitrary signal constellations. Simulation results show that the receiver can cope with the intersymbol interference induced by severe time dispersive channels and operate in difficult underdetermined scenarios where the total number of transmitter antennas is substantially larger than the number of receiver antennas.

An Alternating Direction Algorithm for Hybrid Precoding and Combining in Millimeter Wave MIMO Systems

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) technology is one of the most promising candidates for future wireless communication systems as it can offer large underutilized bandwidths and eases the implementation of large antenna arrays which are required to help overcome the severe signal attenuation that occurs at these frequencies. To reduce the high cost and power consumption of a fully digital mmWave precoder and combiner, hybrid analog/digital designs based on analog phase shifters are often adopted. In this work we derive an iterative algorithm for the hybrid precoding and combining design for spatial multiplexing in mmWave massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. To cope with the difficulty of handling the hardware constraint imposed by the analog phase shifters we use the alternating direction method of the multipliers (ADMM) to split the hybrid design problem into a sequence of smaller subproblems. This results in an iterative algorithm where the design of the analog precoder/combiner consists of a closed form solution followed by a simple projection over the set of matrices with equal magnitude elements. It is initially developed for the fully-connected structure and then extended to the partially-connected architecture which allows simpler hardware implementation. Furthermore, to cope with the more likely wideband scenarios where the channel is frequency selective, we also extend the algorithm to an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based mmWave system. Simulation results in different scenarios show that the proposed design algorithms are capable of achieving performances close to the optimal fully digital solution and can work with a broad range of configuration of antennas, RF chains and data streams.
