Data-Aided Asynchronous OFDM Integrated Sensing and Communications: A Mean-Field Variational Bayes Approach

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is regarded as a key technology for sixth-generation wireless networks, allowing sensing and communication operations to jointly utilize the same spectrum and hardware infrastructure. However, in practical uplink ISAC systems, timing offset (TO) and carrier-frequency offset (CFO) introduce phase distortions across subcarriers and OFDM symbols, which can severely degrade both data detection and sensing-parameter estimation. In this paper, we propose a data-aided variational Bayesian (VB) framework for asynchronous uplink OFDM-ISAC systems. Specifically, the received signal is modeled as a sparse multipath superposition, where the transmitted data symbols, complex path gains, spatial frequencies, delay-Doppler parameters, and synchronization parameters are jointly inferred. To enable tractable inference, we develop a mean-field VB algorithm in which von Mises distributions are used for gridless updates of the angular and delay-Doppler phase parameters, while a Gamma-Gaussian prior is adopted to promote path sparsity. A key feature of the proposed framework is its data-aided sensing capability: after initial pilot-based estimation, the detected data symbols are exploited as additional observations to refine the channel and sensing parameters. This substantially increases the effective sensing resources without requiring extra pilot overhead. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves superior performance compared with SAGE, SBL, AB2FM, and pilot-only VB baselines in terms of symbol error rate, channel reconstruction accuracy, path-parameter estimation, TO/CFO estimation, and 3D localization accuracy. The results also demonstrate that ignoring TO and CFO leads to severe sensing degradation, highlighting the importance of synchronization-aware and data-aided receiver design for ISAC systems.

Multi-Functional Programmable Metasurfaces for 6G and Beyond

The sixth-generation and beyond (B6G) networks are envisioned to support advanced applications that demand high-speed communication, high-precision sensing, and high-performance computing. To underpin this multi-functional evolution, energy- and cost-efficient programmable metasurfaces (PMs) have emerged as a promising technology for dynamically manipulating electromagnetic waves. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of representative multi-functional PM paradigms, with a specific focus on achieving \emph{full-space communication coverage}, \emph{ubiquitous sensing}, as well as \emph{intelligent signal processing and computing}. i) For simultaneously transmitting and reflecting surfaces (STARS)-enabled full-space communications, we elaborate on their operational protocols and pivotal applications in supporting efficient communications, physical layer security, unmanned aerial vehicle networks, and wireless power transfer. ii) For PM-underpinned ubiquitous sensing, we formulate the signal models for the PM-assisted architecture and systematically characterize its advantages in near-field and cooperative sensing, while transitioning to the PM-enabled transceiver architecture and demonstrating its superior performance in multi-band operations. iii) For advanced signal processing and computing, we explore the novel paradigm of stacked intelligent metasurfaces (SIMs), investigating their implementation in wave-domain analog processing and over-the-air mathematical computing. Finally, we identify key research challenges and envision future directions for multi-functional PMs towards B6G.

Autoregressive Attention Neural Networks for Non-Line-of-Sight User Tracking with Dynamic Metasurface Antennas

User localization and tracking in the upcoming generation of wireless networks have the potential to be revolutionized by technologies such as the Dynamic Metasurface Antennas (DMAs). Commonly proposed algorithmic approaches rely on assumptions about relatively dominant Line-of-Sight (LoS) paths, or require pilot transmission sequences whose length is comparable to the number of DMA elements, thus, leading to limited effectiveness and considerable measurement overheads in blocked LoS and dynamic multipath environments. In this paper, we present a two-stage machine-learning-based approach for user tracking, specifically designed for non-LoS multipath settings. A newly proposed attention-based Neural Network (NN) is first trained to map noisy channel responses to potential user positions, regardless of user mobility patterns. This architecture constitutes a modification of the prominent vision transformer, specifically modified for extracting information from high-dimensional frequency response signals. As a second stage, the NN's predictions for the past user positions are passed through a learnable autoregressive model to exploit the time-correlated channel information and obtain the final position predictions. The channel estimation procedure leverages a DMA receive architecture with partially-connected radio frequency chains, which results to reduced numbers of pilots. The numerical evaluation over an outdoor ray-tracing scenario illustrates that despite LoS blockage, this methodology is capable of achieving high position accuracy across various multipath settings.

Channel Estimation for Hybrid Architecture Based Wideband Millimeter Wave Systems

Hybrid analog and digital precoding allows millimeter wave (mmWave) systems to achieve both array and multiplexing gain. The design of the hybrid precoders and combiners, though, is usually based on knowledge of the channel. Prior work on mmWave channel estimation with hybrid architectures focused on narrowband channels. Since mmWave systems will be wideband with frequency selectivity, it is vital to develop channel estimation solutions for hybrid architectures based wideband mmWave systems. In this paper, we develop a sparse formulation and compressed sensing based solutions for the wideband mmWave channel estimation problem for hybrid architectures. First, we leverage the sparse structure of the frequency selective mmWave channels and formulate the channel estimation problem as a sparse recovery in both time and frequency domains. Then, we propose explicit channel estimation techniques for purely time or frequency domains and for combined time/frequency domains. Our solutions are suitable for both SC-FDE and OFDM systems. Simulation results show that the proposed solutions achieve good channel estimation quality, while requiring small training overhead. Leveraging the hybrid architecture at the transceivers gives further improvement in estimation error performance and achievable rates.
