Beyond the Gegenbauer Paradigm: q-Orthogonal Kernels for Machine Learning

The performance of Support Vector Machines (SVMs) critically depends on the kernel function choice, which enables implicit mapping of data into high-dimensional feature spaces. While classical kernels like Radial Basis Function (RBF) remain popular, orthogonal polynomial kernels offer mathematically interpretable alternatives that can incorporate structured prior knowledge. This work extends the orthogonal polynomial kernel paradigm by introducing a novel family based on discrete $q$-Hermite I polynomials, a class of $q$-orthogonal polynomials that generalize classical Hermite polynomials through a deformation parameter $q$. We formally define the q-Hermite kernel and establish its validity under Mercer's theorem. The kernel's inherent boundedness properties naturally prevent annihilation and explosion effects without requiring explicit scaling mechanisms. Extensive experiments across 20 benchmark datasets demonstrate that the proposed kernel achieves competitive performance compared to both classical kernels and other orthogonal polynomial kernels, while offering advantages in numerical stability and computational simplicity. Our results confirm that $q$-orthogonal polynomials constitute a promising direction for kernel design, bridging mathematical elegance with practical machine learning applications, that provides conceptual and algorithmic resources that may be further extended to emerging quantum computing paradigms. To facilitate full reproducibility, we provide the complete implementation and experimental pipeline in an open-access GitHub repository at https://github.com/Kokechacho/SVMs-QSVMs.

Structural interpretability in SVMs with truncated orthogonal polynomial kernels

We study post-training interpretability for Support Vector Machines (SVMs) built from truncated orthogonal polynomial kernels. Since the associated reproducing kernel Hilbert space is finite-dimensional and admits an explicit tensor-product orthonormal basis, the fitted decision function can be expanded exactly in intrinsic RKHS coordinates. This leads to Orthogonal Representation Contribution Analysis (ORCA), a diagnostic framework based on normalized Orthogonal Kernel Contribution (OKC) indices. These indices quantify how the squared RKHS norm of the classifier is distributed across interaction orders, total polynomial degrees, marginal coordinate effects, and pairwise contributions. The methodology is fully post-training and requires neither surrogate models nor retraining. We illustrate its diagnostic value on a synthetic double-spiral problem and on a real five-dimensional echocardiogram dataset. The results show that the proposed indices reveal structural aspects of model complexity that are not captured by predictive accuracy alone.

Ordering results between two finite arithmetic mixture models with multiple-outlier location-scale distributed components

In this article, we introduce finite mixture models (FMMs) renowned for capturing population heterogeneity. Our focus lies in establishing stochastic comparisons between two arithmetic (finite) mixture models, employing the vector majorization concept in the context of various univariate orders of magnitude, transform, and variability. These comparisons are conducted within the framework of multiple-outlier location-scale models. Specifically, we derive sufficient conditions for comparing two finite arithmetic mixture models with components distributed in a multiple-outlier location-scale model.

On stochastic comparisons of largest order statistics in the scale model

Let $X_{λ_{1}},X_{λ_{2}},\ldots ,X_{λ_{n}}$ be independent nonnegative random variables with $X_{λ_{i}}\sim F(λ_{i}t)$, $i=1,\ldots ,n$, where $λ_{i}>0$, $i=1,\ldots ,n$ and $F$ is an absolutely continuous distribution. It is shown that, under some conditions, one largest order statistic $X_{n:n}^{λ}$ is smaller than another one $X_{n:n}^{θ}$ according to likelihood ratio ordering. Furthermore, we apply these results when $F$ is a generalized gamma distribution which includes Weibull, gamma and exponential random variables as special cases.

Stochastic order relations among parallel systems from Weibull distributions

In this article, we focus on stochastic orders to compare the magnitudes of two parallel systems from Weibull distributions when one set of scale parameters majorizes the other. The new results obtained here extend some of those proved by Dykstra et al. (1997) and Joo and Mi (2010) from exponential to Weibull distributions. Also, we present some results for parallel systems from multiple-outlier Weibull models.

New isometry of Krall-Laguerre orthogonal polynomials in martingale spaces

Sets of orthogonal martingales are importants because they can be used as stochastic integrators in a kind of chaotic representation property, see [20]. In this paper, we revisited the problem studied by W. Schoutens in [21], investigating how an inner product derived from an Uvarov transformation of the Laguerre weight function is used in the orthogonalization procedure of a sequence of martingales related to a certain Lévy process, called Teugels Martingales. Since the Uvarov transformation depends by a c<0, we are able to provide infinite sets of strongly orthogonal martingales, each one for every c in (-infty,0). In a similar fashion of [21], we introduce a suitable isometry between the space of polynomials and the space of linear combinations of Teugels martingales as well as the general orthogonalization procedure. Finally, the new construction is applied to the Gamma process.
