Critical theory of Pomeranchuk transitions via high-dimensional bosonization

We use high-dimensional bosonization to derive an effective field theory that describes the Pomeranchuck transition in isotropic two-dimensional Fermi liquids. We find that the transition is triggered by the softening of an eigenmode that leads to spontaneous Fermi surface distortion. The resultant theory in terms of this critical mode has dynamical critical exponent $z = 2$ and the upper critical dimension is $d_c = 4-z= 2$. As a result the system is at the upper critical dimension in 2D, resulting in a Gaussian fixed point with a marginally irrelevant quartic perturbation.

Competing phases and intertwined orders in coupled wires near the self-dual point

The interplay between different quantum phases plays an important role in strongly correlated systems, such as high-$T_c$ cuprates, quantum spin systems, and ultracold atoms. In particular, the application of effective field theory model and renormalization group analysis suggested that the coexistence of density wave (DW) and superfluid (SF) orders can lead to a supersolid phase of ultracold bosons. Here we revisit the problem by considering weakly coupled wires, where we treat the intra-wire interactions exactly via bosonization and inter-wire couplings using a mean-field theory which becomes asymptotically exact in the limit of high dimensionality. We obtain and solve the mean-field equations for the system near the self-dual point, where each wire has the Luttinger parameter $K=1$ and the inter-wire DW and SF coupling strengths are identical. This allows us to find explicit solutions for the possible supersolid order. An energy comparison between different possible solutions shows that the supersolid order is energetically unfavorable at zero temperature. This suggests that the density wave and superfluid phases are connected by a first order transition near the self-dual point. We also discuss the relation between our work and the intertwining of charge density wave and superconducting orders in cuprates.

Multi-critical point and unified description of broken-symmetry phases in spin-1/2 anti-ferromagnets on a square lattice

We show that several distinct broken-symmetry phases in a spin-1/2 anti-ferromagnet on a square lattice with easy-plane anisotropy, including valence bond solid, chiral spin liquid, and the XY-ordered state, can all be accessed by perturbing a multi-critical point with two massless Dirac fermions coupled to a level-one Chern-Simons gauge field. This allows for a unified description of these phases, as well as the phase transitions between them. In a specific phase transition our analysis provide a lattice realization of one of the recently proposed fermion-boson duality, thus lending support to it. We also briefly discuss the relation between our work and the long-sought de-confined criticality in such systems.

Microscopic theory of fractional excitations in gapless bilayer quantum Hall states: semi-quantized quantum Hall states

We derive the low-energy theory of semi-quantized quantum Hall states, a recently observed class of gapless bilayer fractional quantum Hall states. Our theory shows these states to feature gapless quasiparticles of fractional charge coupled to an emergent Chern-Simons gauge field. These gapless quasiparticles can be understood as composites of electrons and Laughlin-like quasiparticles. We show that semi-quantized quantum Hall states exhibit perfect interlayer drag, host non-Fermi liquid physics, and serve as versatile parent states for fully gapped topological phases hosting anyonic excitations.

Weyl nodal surfaces

We consider three-dimensional fermionic band theories that exhibit Weyl nodal surfaces defined as two-band degeneracies that form closed surfaces in the Brillouin zone. We demonstrate that topology ensures robustness of these objects under small perturbations of a Hamiltonian. This topological robustness is illustrated in several four-band models that exhibit nodal surfaces protected by unitary or anti-unitary symmetries. Surface states and Nielsen-Ninomiya doubling of nodal surfaces are also investigated.
