Asymptotic Weyl Symmetry and Its Anomaly in a Curved Spacetime

We explore an unusual symmetry in a field theory on a specific (1+1)-dimensional curved spacetime, which has an interesting interpretation as an approximate asymptotic Weyl symmetry. Unlike the conventional Weyl symmetry, the boundary term under the variation plays a crucial role in understanding for its anomaly. After converting a two-dimensional field theory on curved spacetime to an inhomogeneous field theory, we obtain the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor. Then, we show the existence of an Unruh-like effect in the bubble wall expansion at the zero temperature.

Quantum Inhomogeneous Field Theory: Unruh-Like Effects and Bubble Wall Friction

In this paper, we study a free scalar field in a specific (1+1)-dimensional curved spacetime. By introducing an algebraic state that is locally Hadamard, we derive the renormalized Wightman function and explicitly calculate the covariantly conserved quantum energy-momentum tensor up to a relevant order. From this result, we show that the Hadamard renormalization scheme, which has been effective in traditional quantum field theory in curved spacetime, is also applicable in the quantum inhomogeneous field theory. As applications of this framework, we show the existence of an Unruh-like effect for an observer slightly out of the right asymptotic region, as well as the vanishing of quantum frictional effect in the leading order ($e^{- bx}$) on the bubble wall expansion during the electroweak phase transition in the early universe.

Vacuum and Vortices in Inhomogeneous Abelian Higgs Model

The inhomogeneous abelian Higgs model with a magnetic impurity in the BPS limit is studied for both relativistic and nonrelativistic regimes. Though the symmetry of spatial translation is broken by inhomogeneity, extension to an $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric theory is admitted. The quartic scalar potential has minimum value depending on strength of the impurity but possesses broken phase at spatial asymptote. The vacuum configuration of broken phase can be neither a constant nor the minimum of the scalar potential, but is found as a nontrivial solution of the Bogomolny equations. While its energy density and magnetic field are given by the function of spatial coordinates, the energy and magnetic flux remain zero. The sign of the magnetic impurity term allows either a BPS sector or anti-BPS sector but not both. Thus the obtained solution is identified as the new inhomogeneous broken vacuum of minimum zero energy. In the presence of rotationally symmetric Gaussian type inhomogeneity, topological vortex solutions are also obtained and the effects of the impurity to the vortex are numerically analyzed.

Inhomogeneous Abelian Chern-Simons Higgs Model with New Inhomogeneous BPS Vacuum and Solitons

We study an inhomogeneous U(1) Chern-Simons Higgs model with a magnetic impurity in the BPS limit. The potential is sextic with both broken and unbroken phases, but its minimum varies spatially depending on the strength of the impurity. While the system lacks translation symmetry, it admits a supersymmetric extension. Depending on the sign of the impurity term, it has either a BPS sector or an anti-BPS sector (but not both), which satisfies the Bogomolny equations. The vacuum configuration of the broken phase is not simply determined by the the minimum of the potential since it is no longer constant, but it becomes a nontrivial function satisfying the Bogomolny equations. Thus, the energy and angular momentum densities of the vacuum locally have nonzero distributions, although the total energy and angular momentum remain zero. As in the homogeneous case, the theory supports various BPS soliton solutions, including topological and nontopological vortices and Q-balls. The vorticities as well as the U(1) charges are exclusively positive or negative. For a Gaussian type impurity as a specific example, we obtain rotationally symmetric numerical solutions and analyze their detailed properties. We also discuss the case of a delta-function impurity as the infinitely thin limit of the Gaussian impurity which shows some nontrivial feature of BPS Chern-Simons Higgs theory.

Spontaneous Supersymmetry Breaking in Inhomogeneous Supersymmetric Field Theories and BPS Vacua

We study spontaneous supersymmetry breaking in inhomogeneous extensions of ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric field theory models in 4-dimensions. The ${\cal N}=1$ Abelian Higgs model with the inhomogeneous mass parameter and the FI coefficient that are dependent on spatial coordinates, as well as the O'Raifeartaigh model with all its parameters being dependent on spatial coordinates, are studied in detail. In the presence of inhomogeneous parameters, half supersymmetry can be preserved by adding appropriate inhomogeneous deformations to the original Lagrangians. The inhomogeneous deformations often break the R-symmetry explicitly. In cases where the inhomogeneous deformations do not break the R-symmetry explicitly, we demonstrate that spontaneous breaking of the R-symmetry is infeasible. We argue that those models can not be spontaneous supersymmetry breaking models, according to the Nelson-Seiberg argument. We comment on this issue in the context of a generic ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric model as well.

Toward Quantization of Inhomogeneous Field Theory

We explore the quantization of a $(1+1)$-dimensional inhomogeneous scalar field theory in which Poincaré symmetry is explicitly broken. We show the `classical equivalence' between a scalar field theory on curved spacetime background and its corresponding inhomogeneous scalar field theory. This implies that a hidden connection may exist among some inhomogeneous field theories, which corresponds to general covariance in field theory on curved spacetime. Based on the classical equivalence, we propose how to quantize a specific field theory with broken Poincaré symmetry inspired by standard field theoretic approaches, canonical and algebraic methods, on curved spacetime. Consequently, we show that the Unruh effect can be realized in inhomogeneous field theory and propose that it may be tested by a condensed matter experiment. We suggest that an algebraic approach is appropriate for the quantization of a generic inhomogeneous field theory.

Supersymmetric Backgrounds in $(1+1)$ Dimensions and Inhomogeneous Field Theory

We find a $(1+1)$-dimensional metric solution for a background hosting various supersymmetric field theories with a single non-chiral real supercharge. This supersymmetric background is globally hyperbolic even though it contains a naked null singularity. In this regard, we show that scalar wave propagation on the background is well-defined and so the curvature singularity is a {\it mild} one. Taking inspiration from our previous work, we relate the field theory on this curved background to some classes of $(1+1)$-dimensional inhomogeneous field theory in the supersymmetric setup. Utilizing our supersymmetric background, we elucidate the limitations of canonical quantization and highlight the conceptual advantages of the algebraic approach to quantization.

Supersymmetric Inhomogeneous Field Theories in 1+1 Dimensions

We study supersymmetric inhomogeneous field theories in 1+1 dimensions which have explicit coordinate dependence. Although translation symmetry is broken, part of supersymmetries can be maintained. In this paper, we consider the simplest inhomogeneous theories with one real scalar field, which possess an unbroken supersymmetry. The energy is bounded from below by the topological charge which is not necessarily nonnegative definite. The bound is saturated if the first-order Bogomolny equation is satisfied. Non-constant static supersymmetric solutions above the vacuum involve in general a zero mode although the system lacks translation invariance. We consider two inhomogeneous theories obtained by deforming supersymmetric sine-Gordon theory and $ϕ^6$ theory. They are deformed either by overall inhomogeneous rescaling of the superpotential or by inhomogeneous deformation of the vacuum expectation value. We construct explicitly the most general supersymmetric solutions and obtain the BPS energy spectrum for arbitrary position-dependent deformations. Nature of the solutions and their energies depend only on the boundary values of the inhomogeneous functions. The vacuum of minimum energy is not necessarily a constant configuration. In some cases, we find a one-parameter family of degenerate solutions which include a non-vacuum constant solution as a special case.

Super Yang-Mills Theories with Inhomogeneous Mass Deformations

We construct the 4-dimensional ${\cal N}=\frac12$ and ${\cal N}=1$ inhomogeneously mass-deformed super Yang-Mills theories from the ${\cal N} =1^*$ and ${\cal N} =2^*$ theories, respectively, and analyse their supersymmetric vacua. The inhomogeneity is attributed to the dependence of background fluxes in the type IIB supergravity on a single spatial coordinate. This gives rise to inhomogeneous mass functions in the ${\cal N} =4$ super Yang-Mills theory which describes the dynamics of D3-branes. The Killing spinor equations for those inhomogeneous theories lead to the supersymmetric vacuum equation and a boundary condition. We investigate two types of solutions in the $ {\cal N}=\frac12$ theory, corresponding to the cases of asymptotically constant mass functions and periodic mass functions. For the former case, the boundary condition gives a relation between the parameters of two possibly distinct vacua at the asymptotic boundaries. Brane interpretations for corresponding vacuum solutions in type IIB supergravity are also discussed. For the latter case, we obtain explicit forms of the periodic vacuum solutions.

AdS Q-Soliton and Inhomogeneously mass-deformed ABJM Model

We study dual geometries to a deformed ABJM model with spatially dependent source functions at finite temperature. These source functions are proportional to the mass function $m(x)= m_0 \sin k x$ and its derivative $m'(x)$. As dual geometries, we find hairy black branes and AdS solitons corresponding to deconfinement phase and confining phase of the dual field theory, respectively. It turns out that the hairy AdS solitons have lower free energy than the black branes when the Hawking temperature is smaller than the confining scale. Therefore the dual system undergoes the first order phase transition. Even though our study is limited to the so-called Q-lattice ansatz, the solution space contains a set of solutions dual to a supersymmetric mass deformation. As a physical quantity to probe the confining phase, we investigate the holographic entanglement entropy and discuss its behavior in terms of modulation effect.

Renormalized Holographic Subregion Complexity under Relevant Perturbations

We construct renormalized holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) and subregion complexity (HSC) in the CV conjecture for asymptotically AdS$_4$ and AdS$_5$ geometries under relevant perturbations. Using the holographic renormalization method developed in the gauge/gravity duality, we obtain counter terms which are invariant under coordinate choices. We explicitly define different forms of renormalized HEE and HSC, according to conformal dimensions of relevant operators in the $d=3$ and $d=4$ dual field theories. We use a general embedding for arbitrary entangling subregions and showed that any choice of the coordinate system gives the same form of the counter terms, since they are written in terms of curvature invariants and scalar fields on the boundaries. We show an explicit example of our general procedure. Intriguingly, we find that a divergent term of the HSC in the asymptotically AdS$_5$ geometry under relevant perturbations with operators of conformal dimensions in the range $0< Δ< \frac{1}{2}\,\, {\rm and} \,\, \frac{7}{2}< Δ< 4$ cannot be cancelled out by adding any coordinate invariant counter term. This implies that the HSCs in these ranges of the conformal dimensions are not renormalizable covariantly.

Thermodynamics of Inhomogeneously Mass-deformed ABJM Model and Pressure Anisotropy

In this paper we study the thermodynamics of black branes with a modulated complex scalar in the context of bulk and boundary theories. The modulation induces inhomogeneity to the dual field theory, anisotropic pressure, and brane charge to the bulk geometry. The first law of thermodynamics and the Smarr relation are obtained using the off-shell ADT and the reduced action formalisms. We discuss the prescription for the mass of black branes, which relies on relevant and marginal deformations in the dual field theory. One of the cases is the gravity dual to a ABJM model with a sinusoidal mass function depending on a spatial coordinate. This is the first study of the deformed ABJM model at finite temperature including bulk thermodynamics.

Aspects of Massive ABJM Models with Inhomogeneous Mass Parameters

Recently, ${\cal N} =3$ mass-deformed ABJM model with arbitrary mass-function depending on a spatial coordinate was constructed. In addition to the ${\cal N} = 3$ case, we construct lower supersymmetric ${\cal N} =1$ and ${\cal N} =2$ inhomogeneously mass-deformed ABJM (ImABJM) models, which require three and two arbitrary mass-functions, respectively. We also construct general vacuum solutions of the ${\cal N} = 3$ ImABJM model for any periodic mass-function. There are two classes of vacua, which are diagonal type and GRVV type according to reference value of mass-functions. We provide explicit examples of the vacuum solutions and discuss related operators.

Holography of Massive M2-brane Theory with Discrete Torsion

We investigate the gauge/gravity duality between the ${\cal N} = 6$ mass-deformed ABJ theory with U$_k(N+l)\times$U$_{-k}(N)$ gauge symmetry and the 11-dimensional supergravity on LLM geometries with SO(2,1)$\times$SO(4)/${\mathbb Z}_k\times$SO(4)/${\mathbb Z}_k$ isometry and the discrete torsion $l$. For chiral primary operators with conformal dimensions $Δ=1,2$, we obtain the exact vacuum expectation values using the holographic method in 11-dimensional supergravity and show that the results depend on the shapes of droplet pictures in LLM geometries. The $\frac{l}{\sqrt{N}}$ contributions from the discrete torsion $l$ for several simple droplet pictures in the large $N$ limit are determined in holographic vacuum expectation values. We also explore the effects of the orbifolding ${\mathbb Z}_k$ and the asymptotic discrete torsion $l$, on the gauge/gravity duality dictionary and on the nature of the asymptotic limits of the LLM geometries.

Gravitational Waves as a Probe of the Extra Dimension

We consider the Einstein-Hilbert action without cosmological constant in 5-dimensions and implement the Kaluza-Klein (KK) reduction by compactifying the fifth direction on a circle of small but finite radius. For non-zero compactification radius, the 4- dimensional spectrum contains massless and massive KK modes. For the massive KK modes, we retain four KK tensor and one KK scalar modes after a gauge fixing. We treat those massive KK modes as stochastic sources of gravitational wave (GW) with characteristic dependences of the frequencies on the size of the extra dimension. Using the observational bounds on the size of the extra dimension and on the characteristic strain, we make an order estimation on the frequencies and amplitudes of the massive KK modes that can contribute to the GW.

Janus ABJM Models with Mass Deformation

We construct a large class of ${\cal N} = 3$ Janus ABJM models with mass deformation, where the mass depends on a spatial (or lightcone) coordinate. We also show that the resulting Janus model can be identified with an effective action of M2-branes in the presence of a background self-dual 4-form field strength varying along one spatial (or lightcone) coordinate.

Gravity from Entanglement and RG Flow in a Top-down Approach

The duality between a $d$-dimensional conformal field theory with relevant deformation and a gravity theory on an asymptotically AdS$_{d+1}$ geometry, has become a suitable tool in the investigation of the emergence of gravity from quantum entanglement in field theory. Recently, we have tested the duality between the mass-deformed ABJM theory and asymptotically AdS$_4$ gravity theory, which is obtained from the KK reduction of the 11-dimensional supergravity on the LLM geometry. In this paper, we extend the KK reduction procedure beyond the linear order and establish non-trivial KK maps between 4-dimensional fields and 11-dimensional fluctuations. We rely on this gauge/gravity duality to calculate the entanglement entropy by using the Ryu-Takayanagi holographic formula and the path integral method developed by Faulkner. We show that the entanglement entropies obtained using these two methods agree when the asymptotically AdS$_4$ metric satisfies the linearized Einstein equation with nonvanishing energy-momentum tensor for two scalar fields. These scalar fields encode the information of the relevant deformation of the ABJM theory. This confirms that the asymptotic limit of LLM geometry is the emergent gravity of the quantum entanglement in the mass-deformed ABJM theory with a small mass parameter. We also comment on the issue of the relative entropy and the Fisher information in our setup.

Holography of Massive M2-brane Theory: Non-linear Extension

We investigate the gauge/gravity duality between the ${\cal N} = 6$ mass-deformed ABJM theory with U$_k(N)\times$U$_{-k}(N)$ gauge symmetry and the 11-dimensional supergravity on LLM geometries with SO(2,1)$\times$SO(4)/${\mathbb Z}_k$ $\times$SO(4)/${\mathbb Z}_k$ isometry, in terms of a KK holography, which involves quadratic order field redefinitions. As a non-trivial extension of the previous work arXiv:1612.05066, we implement the KK mappings for various gauge invariant fields up to quadratic order to obtain 4-dimensional gravity fields. The non-linearity of the KK maps indicates that, in the current case, we can observe the true purpose of the non-linear KK holography of the LLM solutions. Using such KK holography procedure, we obtain the vacuum expectation values of the chiral primary operator of conformal dimension $Δ= 2$ in the large $N$ limit but with general $k$ and examine the gauge/gravity duality for LLM solutions, which are represented by square-shaped Young diagrams. We also show that the vacuum expectation values of the massive KK graviton modes are vanishing as expected by the supersymmetry.
