Center of mass energy of colliding electrically neutral particles and super-Penrose process

We consider collisions of electrically neutral particles in the background of axially symmetric rotating space-times. For reactions of the kind 1+2$% \rightarrow $3+4 we give full classification of possible scenarios based on exact expressions for dynamic characteristics of particles 3 and 4 depending on particles 1 and 2. There are five nonequivalent scenarios valid for different types of space-time (black hole, naked singularity, etc.). We are mainly interested in the situations when particle collisions can give unbounded outcome for (i) the energy $E_{c.m.}$ in the center of mass frame and (ii) Killing energy $E$ at infinity. If (i) is fulfilled, this may or may not lead to (ii). If (ii) holds, this is called the super-Penrose process (SPP). For equatorial particle motion, we establish close relation between the type of behavior of $E_{c.m.}$ depending on the lapse function $% N $ in the point of collision and the possibility of the SPP. This unites separate previous observations in literature in a unified picture as a whole. In doing so, no explicit transformations to the center of mass frame and back are needed, so all consideration is carried out in the original frame. As a result,we suggest classification of sub-classes of scenarios that are able (or unable) to give rise to the SPP particle collision, super-Penrose process, center of mass frame.

Regular frames and particle's rotation near a black hole

We consider a particle moving towards a rotating black hole. We are interested in the number of its revolution $n$ around a black hole. In our previous work (Pavlov and Zaslavskii in Gen Relativ Gravit 50: 14, 2018. arXiv:1707.02860) we considered this issue in the Boyer-Lindquist type of coordinates with a subsequent procedure of subtraction. Now, we reconsider this issue using from the very beginning the frames regular on the horizon. For a nonextremal black hole, regularity of a coordinate frame leads to the finiteness of a number of revolutions around a black hole without a subtraction procedure. Meanwhile, for extremal black holes comparison of $n$ calculated in the regular frame with some subtraction procedures used by us earlier shows that the results can be different.

Distorted vacuum black holes in the canonical ensemble

We consider a vacuum static spacetime in a finite size cavity. On the boundary, we specify a metric and a finite constant local temperature $T$. No spherical or any other spatial symmetry is assumed. We show that (i) inside a cavity, only a black hole or flat spacetime are possible, whereas a curved horizonless regular space-time is excluded, (ii) in the limit when the horizon area shrinks, the Hawking temperature diverges, (iii) for the existence of a black hole, $T$ should be high enough. When $T\rightarrow \infty $, a black hole phase is favorable thermodynamically. Our consideration essentially uses the coordinate system introduced by Israel in his famous proof of the uniqueness theorem.

Pure electric Penrose and super-Penrose processes in the flat space-time

Let a particle move in the flat space-time under the action of the electric potential. If it decays to two fragments, the energy of debris can be larger than the original energy and, moreover, the efficiency of such a process can be unbounded. This effect can be considered as a limit of the Denardo-Ruffini process near the Reissner-Nordström black hole when the gravitational constant and/or black hole mass tend to zero. There are scenarios in which the energy of debris at infinity is much larger than the initial one. Comparison with other close but distinct effects is discussed.

Super-Penrose process and rotating wormholes

We consider collision of particles in a wormhole near its throat. Particles come from the opposite mouths. If the lapse function is small enough there, the energy $E$ of debris at infinity grows unbounded, so we are faced with the so-called super-Penrose process. This requires the existence of the ergoregion, so a wormhole should be rotating.

On regular frames near rotating black holes

We consider the metric of a generic axially symmetric rotating stationary black hole. The general approach is developed that enables us to construct coordinate frame regular near the horizon. As explicit examples, the Kerr and Kerr-Newmann-(anti-)de Sitter metrics are considered. It is shown how the rotational versions of the Painleve'-Gullstrand and Doran coordinates appear in this scheme as particular cases. For the 2+1 version of the metric the direct generalization of the Lemaître coordinate system is obtained. It is shown that the possibility of introducing a regular frame is indirectly related to the constancy of a black hole angular velocity and the rate with which the metric coefficient responsible for the rotation of spacetime, tends to it.

On white holes as particle accelerators

We analyze scenarios of particle collisions in the metric of a nonextremal black hole that can potentially lead to ultrahigh energy $E_{c.m.}$ in their centre of mass frame. Particle 1 comes from infinity to the black hole horizon while particle 2 emerges from a white hole region. It is shown that unbounded $E_{c.m.}$ $\ $require that particle 2 pass close to the bifurcation point. The analogy with collisions inside the horizon is discussed.

Number of revolutions of a particle around a black hole: Is it infinite or finite?

We consider a particle falling into a rotating black hole. Such a particle makes an infinite number of revolutions $n$ from the viewpoint of a remote observer who uses the Boyer-Lindquist type of coordinates. We examine the behavior of $n$ when it is measured with respect to a local reference frame that also rotates due to dragging effect of spacetime. The crucial point consists here in the observation that for a nonextremal black hole, the leading contributions to $n$ from a particle itself and the reference frame have the same form being in fact universal, so that divergences mutually cancel. As a result, the relative number of revolutions turns out to be finite. For the extremal black hole this is not so, $n$ can be infinite. Different choices of the local reference frame are considered, the results turn out to be the same qualitatively. For illustration, we discuss two explicit examples - rotation in the flat spacetime and in the Kerr metric.

Collisional super-Penrose process and Wald inequalities

We consider collision of two massive particles in the equatorial plane of an axially symmetric stationary spacetime that produces two massless particles afterwards. It is implied that the horizon is absent but there is a naked singularity or another potential barrier that makes possible the head-on collision. The relationship between the energy in the center of mass frame $E_{c.m.}$ and the Killing energy $E$ measured at infinity is analyzed. It follows immediately from the Wald inequalities that unbounded $E$ is possible for unbounded $E_{c.m.}$ only. This can be realized if the spacetime is close to the threshold of the horizon formation. Different types of spacetimes (black holes, naked singularities, wormholes) correspond to different possible relations between $E_{c.m.}$ and $E$. We develop a general approach that enables us to describe the collision process in the frames of the stationary observer and ZAMO (zero angular momentum observer). The escape cone and escape fraction are derived. A simple explanation of the existence of the bright spot is given. For the particular case of the Kerr metric, our results agree with the previous ones found in M. Patil, T. Harada, K. Nakao, P.S. Joshi, and M. Kimura, Phys. Rev. D 93, 104015 (2016).

Black hole with a scalar field as a particle accelerator

We consider stationary axially symmetric black holes with the background scalar field and test particles that can interact with this field directly. Then, particle collision near a black hole can lead to the unbounded energy $% E_{c.m.}$ in the centre of mass frame (contrary to some recent claims in literature). This happens always if one of particles is neutral whereas another one has nonzero scalar charge. Kinematically, two cases occur here. (i) A neutral particle approaches the horizon with the speed of light while the velocity of the charged one remains separated from it (this is direct analogue of the situation with collision of geodesic particles.). (ii) Both particles approach the horizon with the speed almost equal to that of light but with different rates. As a result, in both cases the relative velocity also approaches the speed of light, so that $E_{c.m.}$ $\ $becomes unbounded. We consider also a case when the metric coefficient $g_{ϕϕ}\rightarrow 0$ near a black hole. Then, overlap between the geometric factor and the presence of the scalar field opens additional scenarios in which unbounded energy $E_{c.m.}$ is possible as well. We give a full list of possible scenarios of high-energy collisions for the situations considered.

Maximum efficiency of the collisional Penrose process

We consider collision of two particles that move in the equatorial plane near a general stationary rotating axially symmetric extremal black hole. One of particles is critical (with fine-tuned parameters) and moves in the outward direction. The second particle (usual, not fine-tuned) comes from infinity. We examine the efficiency $η$ of the collisional Penrose process. There are two relevant cases here: (i) a particle falling into a black hole after collision is heavy, (ii) it has a finite mass. We show that the maximum of $η$ in case (ii) is less or equal to that in case (i). It is argued that for superheavy particles, the bound applies to nonequatorial motion as well. As an example, we analyze collision in the Kerr-Newman background. When the bound is the same for processes (i) and (ii), $η=3$ for this metric. For the Kerr black hole, recent results in literature are reproduced.

Equatorial geodesics in ergoregion of dirty black holes and zero energy observers

We consider equatorial motion of particles in the ergoregion of generic axially symmetric rotating black holes. We introduce the notion of zero energy observers (ZEOs) as counterparts to known zero angular observers (ZAMOs). It is shown that the trajectory of a ZEO has precisely one turning point that lies on the boundary of the ergoregion for photons and inside the ergoregion for massive particles. As a consequence, such trajectories enter the ergosphere from the white hole region under horizon and leave it crossing the horizon again (entering the black hole region). The angular velocity of ZEO does not depend on the angular momentum. For particles with $% E>0$ this velocity is bigger than for a ZEO, for $E<0$ it is smaller. General limitations on the angular momentum are found depending on whether the trajectory lies entirely inside the ergoregion, bounces back from the boundary or intersects it. These results generalize the recent observations made in A. A. Grib, Yu. V. Pavlov, arXiv:1601.02592 for the Kerr metric. We also show that collision between a ZEO and a particle with $E\neq 0$ near a black hole can lead to the unbound energy in the centre of mass thus giving a special version of the Bañados - Silk - West effect.

Super-Penrose process due to collisions inside ergosphere

If two particles collide inside the ergosphere, the energy in the centre of mass frame can be made unbound provided at least one of particles has a large negative angular momentum (A. A. Grib and Yu. V. Pavlov, Europhys. Lett. 101, 20004 (2013)). We show that the same condition can give rise to unbounded Killing energy of debris at infinity, i.e. super-Penrose process. Proximity of the point of collision to the black hole horizon is not required.

High energy particle collisions and geometry of horizon

We consider collision of two geodesic particles near the horizon of such an axially symmetric black hole (rotating or static) that the metric coefficient $g_{ϕϕ}\rightarrow 0$ there. It is shown that (both for regular and singular horizons) the energy in the centre of mass frame $% E_{c.m.}$ is indefinitely large even without fine-tuning of particles' parameters. Kinematically, this is collision between two rapid particles that approach the horizon almost with the speed of light but at different angles. The latter is the reason why the relative velocity tends to that of light, hence to high $E_{c.m.}$. Our approach is model-independent. It relies on general properties of geometry and is insensitive to the details of material source that supports the geometies of the type under consideration. For several particular models (the stringy black hole, the Brans-Dicke analogue of the Schwarzschild metric and the Janis-Newman-Winicour one) we recover the results found in literature previously.

Schwarzschild black hole as particle accelerator of spinning particles

It is shown that in the Schwarzschild background there exists direct counterpart of the Bañados-Silk-West effect for spinning particles. This means that if two particles collide near the black hole horizon, their energy in the centre of mass frame can grow unbounded. In doing so, the crucial role is played by so-called near-critical trajectories when particle's parameters are almost fine-tuned. Direct scenario of the collision under discussion is possible with restriction on the energy-to-mass ratio \thinspace $E/m<\frac{1}{2\sqrt{3}}$ only. However, if one takes into account multiple scattering, this becomes possible for $E\geq m$ as well.

Rapidly rotating spacetimes and collisional super-Penrose process

We consider generic axially symmetric rotating spacetimes and examine particle collisions in the ergoregion. The results are generic and agree with those obtained in the particular case of the rotating Teo wormhole in N. Tsukamoto and C. Bambi, Phys. Rev. D 91, 104040 (2015). It is shown that for sufficiently rapid rotation, the energy of a particle escaping to infinity can become arbitrary large (so-called super-Penrose process). Moreover, this energy is typically much larger than the center-of mass energy of colliding particles. In this sense the situation differs radically from that for collisions near black holes.

Is the super-Penrose process possible near black holes?

We consider collisions of particles near generic axially symmetric extremal black holes. We examine possibility of indefinitely large extraction of energy (the so-called super-Penrose process) in the limit when the point of collision approaches the horizon. Three potential options are considered (fractional powers of the lapse function in the relations between the energies and the angular momenta of particles in the point of collision), collision between outgoing particles and ingoing ones, collision in the ergoregion far from the horizon). It turns out in all three cases that states suitable for the super-Penrose process cannot be obtained from the previous collision of particles with finite masses and angular momenta.

Rotation as an origin of high energy particle collisions

We consider collision of two particles in rotating spacetimes without horizons. If the metric coefficient responsible for rotation of spacetime is big enough, the energy of collisions in the centre of mass frame can be as large as one likes. This can happen in the ergoregion only. The results are model-independent and apply both to relativistic stars and wormholes.
