Solution of Baxter equation for the $q$-Toda and Toda$_2$ chains by NLIE

We construct a basis of solutions of the scalar $\boldsymbol{ \texttt{t} }- \boldsymbol{ \texttt{Q} }$ equation describing the spectrum of the $q$-Toda and Toda$_2$ chains by using auxiliary non-linear integral equations. Our construction allows us to provide quantisation conditions for the spectra of these models in the form of thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz-like equations.

Baxter operator and Baxter equation for $q$-Toda and Toda$_2$ chains

We construct the Baxter operator $\boldsymbol{ \texttt{Q} }(λ)$ for the $q$-Toda chain and the Toda$_2$ chain (the Toda chain in the second Hamiltonian structure). Our construction builds on the relation between the Baxter operator and Bäcklund transformations that were unravelled in {\cite{GaPa92}}. We construct a number of quantum intertwiners ensuring the commutativity of $\boldsymbol{ \texttt{Q} }(λ)$ with the transfer matrix of the models and the one of $\boldsymbol{ \texttt{Q} }$'s between each other. Most importantly, $\boldsymbol{ \texttt{Q} }(λ)$ is modular invariant in the sense of Faddeev. We derive the Baxter equation for the eigenvalues $q(λ)$ of $\boldsymbol{ \texttt{Q} }(λ)$ and show that these are entire functions of $λ$. This last property will ultimately lead to the quantisation of the spectrum for the considered Toda chains, in a subsequent publication.

The Toda$_2$ chain

We show that a natural discretisation of Virasoro algebra yields a quantum integrable model which is the Toda chain in the second Hamiltonian structure.

Classical Bethe Ansatz and Normal Forms in the Jaynes-Cummings Model

The Jaynes-Cummings-Gaudin model describes a collection of $n$ spins coupled to an harmonic oscillator. It is known to be integrable, so one can define a moment map which associates to each point in phase-space the list of values of the $n+1$ conserved Hamiltonians. We identify all the critical points of this map and we compute the corresponding quadratic normal forms, using the Lax matrix representation of the model. The normal coordinates are constructed by a procedure which appears as a classical version of the Bethe Ansatz used to solve the quantum model. We show that only elliptic or focus-focus singularities are present in this model, which provides an interesting example of a symplectic toric action with singularities. To explore these, we study in detail the degeneracies of the spectral curves for the $n=1$ and $n=2$ cases. This gives a complete picture for the image of the momentum map (IMM) and the associated bifurcation diagram. For $n=2$ we found in particular some lines of rank 1 which lie, for one part, on the boundary of the IMM, where they behave like an edge separating two faces, and which go, for another part, inside the IMM.

A semiclassical study of the Jaynes-Cummings model

We consider the Jaynes-Cummings model of a single quantum spin $s$ coupled to a harmonic oscillator in a parameter regime where the underlying classical dynamics exhibits an unstable equilibrium point. This state of the model is relevant to the physics of cold atom systems, in non-equilibrium situations obtained by fast sweeping through a Feshbach resonance. We show that in this integrable system with two degrees of freedom, for any initial condition close to the unstable point, the classical dynamics is controlled by a singularity of the focus-focus type. In particular, it displays the expected monodromy, which forbids the existence of global action-angle coordinates. Explicit calculations of the joint spectrum of conserved quantities reveal the monodromy at the quantum level, as a dislocation in the lattice of eigenvalues. We perform a detailed semi-classical analysis of the associated eigenstates. Whereas most of the levels are well described by the usual Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rules, properly adapted to polar coordinates, we show how these rules are modified in the vicinity of the critical level. The spectral decomposition of the classically unstable state is computed, and is found to be dominated by the critical WKB states. This provides a useful tool to analyze the quantum dynamics starting from this particular state, which exhibits an aperiodic sequence of solitonic pulses with a rather well defined characteristic frequency.

Equations in dual variables for Whittaker functions

It is known that the Whittaker functions $w(q,λ)$ associated to the group SL(N) are eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonians of the open Toda chain, hence satisfy a set of differential equations in the Toda variables $q_i$. Using the expression of the $q_i$ for the closed Toda chain in terms of Sklyanin variables $λ_i$, and the known relations between the open and the closed Toda chains, we show that Whittaker functions also satisfy a set of new difference equations in $λ_i$.

Integrability and Conformal Symmetry in Higher Dimensions: A Model with Exact Hopfion Solutions

We use ideas on integrability in higher dimensions to define Lorentz invariant field theories with an infinite number of local conserved currents. The models considered have a two dimensional target space. Requiring the existence of Lagrangean and the stability of static solutions singles out a class of models which have an additional conformal symmetry. That is used to explain the existence of an ansatz leading to solutions with non trivial Hopf charges.

The symplectic structure of rational Lax pair systems

We consider dynamical systems associated to Lax pairs depending rationnally on a spectral parameter. We show that we can express the symplectic form in terms of algebro--geometric data provided that the symplectic structure on L is of Kirillov type. In particular, in this case the dynamical system is integrable.

Null-vectors in Integrable Field Theory

The form factor bootstrap approach allows to construct the space of local fields in the massive restricted sine-Gordon model. This space has to be isomorphic to that of the corresponding minimal model of conformal field theory. We describe the subspaces which correspond to the Verma modules of primary fields in terms of the commutative algebra of local integrals of motion and of a fermion (Neveu-Schwarz or Ramond depending on the particular primary field). The description of null-vectors relies on the relation between form factors and deformed hyper-elliptic integrals. The null-vectors correspond to the deformed exact forms and to the deformed Riemann bilinear identity. In the operator language, the null-vectors are created by the action of two operators $\CQ$ (linear in the fermion) and $\CC$ (quadratic in the fermion). We show that by factorizing out the null-vectors one gets the space of operators with the correct character. In the classical limit, using the operators $\CQ$ and $\CC$ we obtain a new, very compact, description of the KdV hierarchy. We also discuss a beautiful relation with the method of Whitham.

Form factors, KdV and Deformed Hyperelliptic Curves

We review and summarize recent works on the relation between form factors in integrable quantum field theory and deformation of geometrical data associated to hyper-elliptic curves. This relation, which is based on a deformation of the Riemann bilinear identity, in particular leads to the notion of null vectors in integrable field theory and to a new description of the KdV hierarchy.

Quantization of Solitons and the Restricted Sine-Gordon Model

We show how to compute form factors, matrix elements of local fields, in the restricted sine-Gordon model, at the reflectionless points, by quantizing solitons. We introduce (quantum) separated variables in which the Hamiltonians are expressed in terms of (quantum) tau-functions. We explicitly describe the soliton wave functions, and we explain how the restriction is related to an unusual hermitian structure. We also present a semi-classical analysis which enlightens the fact that the restricted sine-Gordon model corresponds to an analytical continuation of the sine-Gordon model, intermediate between sine-Gordon and KdV.

The Gervais-Neveu-Felder equation and the quantum Calogero-Moser systems

We quantize the spin Calogero-Moser model in the $R$-matrix formalism. The quantum $R$-matrix of the model is dynamical. This $R$-matrix has already appeared in Gervais-Neveu's quantization of Toda field theory and in Felder's quantization of the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard equation.
