On cancellation of non-adiabatic and off-shell effects in the antiproton annihilation in deuteron

As known, some approximate approaches to the hadron scattering from nuclei work rather well far beyond the limits of their applicability. This was explained by cancellation of the contributions (non-adiabatic and off-shell effects) omitted in these approaches. Moreover, in some cases (in particular, for the reaction $\bar{p}d \to e^+e^-n$) this cancellation allowed to derive rather simple analytical formula for the reaction amplitude. Solving the Faddeev equations, we confirm numerically this formula and, hence, the cancellations.

Conceptual design of the Spin Physics Detector

The Spin Physics Detector, a universal facility for studying the nucleon spin structure and other spin-related phenomena with polarized proton and deuteron beams, is proposed to be placed in one of the two interaction points of the NICA collider that is under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna, Russia). At the heart of the project there is huge experience with polarized beams at JINR. The main objective of the proposed experiment is the comprehensive study of the unpolarized and polarized gluon content of the nucleon. Spin measurements at the Spin Physics Detector at the NICA collider have bright perspectives to make a unique contribution and challenge our understanding of the spin structure of the nucleon. In this document the Conceptual Design of the Spin Physics Detector is presented.

Gamma- and Cosmic-Ray Observations with the GAMMA-400 Gamma-Ray Telescope

The future space-based GAMMA-400 gamma-ray telescope will operate onboard the Russian astrophysical observatory in a highly elliptic orbit during 7 years to observe Galactic plane, Galactic Center, Fermi Bubbles, Crab, Vela, Cygnus X, Geminga, Sun, and other regions and measure gamma- and cosmic-ray fluxes. Observations will be performed in the point-source mode continuously for a long time (~100 days). GAMMA-400 will measure gamma rays in the energy range from ~20 MeV to several TeV and cosmic-ray electrons + positrons up to several tens TeV. GAMMA-400 instrument will have very good angle and energy resolutions, high separation efficiency of gamma rays from cosmic-ray background, as well as electrons + positrons from protons. The main feature of GAMMA-400 is the unprecedented angular resolution for energies >30 GeV better than the space-based and ground-based gamma-ray telescopes by a factor of 5-10. GAMMA-400 observations will permit to resolve gamma rays from annihilation or decay of dark matter particles, identify many discrete sources, clarify the structure of extended sources, specify the data on cosmic-ray electron + positron spectra.

Possible studies at the first stage of the NICA collider operation with polarized and unpolarized proton and deuteron beams

This paper contains suggestions for experiments with usage of the Spin Physics Detector (SPD) at the first stage of the SPD NICA Programme developing at JINR. Double polarized pp-, dd- and pd- collisions at c.m.s. NN energies of 3.4-10 GeV, which will be accessible at the initial stage of experiments, allow one to study spin dependence of the NN interaction, search for multiquark states at double strangeness, charm and beauty thresholds, study the short-range structure of the deuteron. Double polarized pd scattering offer a possibility to test the Standard Model through the search for T-invariance violation.

New complex EAS installation of the Tien Shan Mountain Cosmic Ray Station

We present a description of the new complex installation for the study of extensive air showers which was created at the Tien Shan mountain cosmic ray station, as well as the results of the test measurements made there in 2014-2016. At present, the system for registration of electromagnetic shower component consists of $\sim$100 detector points built on the basis of plastic scintillator plates with the sensitive area of 0.25m$^2$ and 1m$^2$, spread equidistantly over $\sim$10$^4$m$^2$ space. The dynamic range of scintillation amplitude measurements is currently about $(3-7)\cdot 10^4$, and there is a prospect of it being extended up to $\sim$10$^6$. The direction of shower arrival is defined by signal delays from a number of the scintillators placed cross-wise at the periphery of the detector system. For the investigation of nuclear active shower components there was created a multi-tier 55m$^2$ ionization-neutron calorimeter with a sum absorber thickness of $\sim$1000g/cm$^2$, typical spatial resolution of the order of 10cm, and dynamic range of ionization measurement channel about $\sim$10$^5$. Also, the use of saturation-free neutron detectors is anticipated for registration of the high- and low-energy hadron components in the region of shower core. A complex of underground detectors is designed for the study of muonic and penetrative nuclear-active components of the shower. The full stack of data acquisition, detector calibration, and shower parameters restoration procedures are now completed, and the newly obtained shower size spectrum and lateral distribution of shower particles occur in agreement with conventional data. Future studies in the field of $10^{14}-10^{17}$eV cosmic ray physics to be held at the new shower installation are discussed.

The "Horizon-T" Experiment: Extensive Air Showers Detection

Horizon-T is an innovative detector system constructed to study Extensive Air Showers (EAS) in the energy range above 10^16 eV coming from a wide range of zenith angles (0 - 85 degrees). The system is located at Tien Shan high-altitude Science Station of Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences at approximately 3340 meters above the sea level. It consists of eight charged particle detection points separated by the distance up to one kilometer as well as optical detector subsystem to view the Vavilov-Cerenkov light from the EAS. The time resolution of charged particles and Vavilov-Cerenkov light photons passage of the detector system is a few ns. This level of resolution allows conducting research of atmospheric development of individual EAS.

High-energy gamma-ray studying with GAMMA-400

Extraterrestrial gamma-ray astronomy is now a source of new knowledge in the fields of astrophysics, cosmic-ray physics, and the nature of dark matter. The next absolutely necessary step in the development of extraterrestrial high-energy gamma-ray astronomy is the improvement of the physical and technical characteristics of gamma-ray telescopes, especially the angular and energy resolutions. Such a new generation telescope will be GAMMA-400. GAMMA-400, currently developing gamma-ray telescope, together with X-ray telescope will precisely and detailed observe in the energy range of ~20 MeV to ~1000 GeV and 3-30 keV the Galactic plane, especially, Galactic Center, Fermi Bubbles, Crab, Cygnus, etc. The GAMMA- 400 will operate in the highly elliptic orbit continuously for a long time with the unprecedented angular (~0.01° at Eγ = 100 GeV) and energy (~1% at Eγ = 100 GeV) resolutions better than the Fermi-LAT, as well as ground gamma-ray telescopes, by a factor of 5-10. GAMMA-400 will permit to resolve gamma rays from annihilation or decay of dark matter particles, identify many discrete sources (many of which are variable), to clarify the structure of extended sources, to specify the data on the diffuse emission.

Improvement of the GAMMA-400 physical scheme for precision gamma-ray emission investigations

The main goal for the GAMMA-400 gamma-ray telescope mission is to perform a sensitive search for signatures of dark matter particles in high-energy gamma-ray emission. Measurements will also concern the following scientific goals: detailed study of the Galactic center region, investigation of point and extended gamma-ray sources, studies of the energy spectra of Galactic and extragalactic diffuse emissions. To perform these measurements the GAMMA-400 gamma-ray telescope possesses unique physical characteristics for energy range from ~20 MeV to ~1000 GeV in comparison with previous and current space and ground-based experiments. The major advantage of the GAMMA-400 instrument is excellent angular and energy resolutions for gamma-rays above 10 GeV. The gamma-ray telescope angular and energy resolutions for the main aperture at 100-GeV gamma rays are ~0.01 deg and ~1%, respectively. The special goal is to improve physical characteristics in the low- energy range from ~20 MeV to 100 MeV. Minimizing the amount of dead matter in the telescope aperture allows us to obtain the angular and energy resolutions better in this range than in current space missions. The gamma-ray telescope angular resolution at 50-MeV gamma rays is better than 5 deg and energy resolution is ~10%. We report the method providing these results.

GAMMA-400 gamma-ray observatory

The GAMMA-400 gamma-ray telescope with excellent angular and energy resolutions is designed to search for signatures of dark matter in the fluxes of gamma-ray emission and electrons + positrons. Precision investigations of gamma-ray emission from Galactic Center, Crab, Vela, Cygnus, Geminga, and other regions will be performed, as well as diffuse gamma-ray emission, along with measurements of high-energy electron + positron and nuclei fluxes. Furthermore, it will study gamma-ray bursts and gamma-ray emission from the Sun during periods of solar activity. The energy range of GAMMA-400 is expected to be from ~20 MeV up to TeV energies for gamma rays, up to 20 TeV for electrons + positrons, and up to 10E15 eV for cosmic-ray nuclei. For high-energy gamma rays with energy from 10 to 100 GeV, the GAMMA-400 angular resolution improves from 0.1° to ~0.01° and energy resolution from 3% to ~1%; the proton rejection factor is ~5x10E5. GAMMA-400 will be installed onboard the Russian space observatory.

Observation of neutron emission in the process of X-pinch

The results of measuring the neutron flux in the process of the X-pinch are presented. The measurements were carried out using CR-39 track detectors. It was found that in the process of X-pinch recorded neutron emission over a wide energy range (from thermal to energies greater than 10 MeV) with an intensity of more than 108 neutrons per shot into 4π sr solid angle (assuming isotropy of radiation and localizing the source in the "hot spot"). Data of track detectors suggest that at the time of discharge produced fast neutrons are then slowed down and turned into thermal.

On the gravitational quantum states of helium atoms in the gravitational field of a cold neutron star

A study of gravitational properties of matter presents a fundamental interest. The possibility of investigation of quantum gravitational states of matter by the example of helium atom is shown. The capability of the existence of helium quantum states in the gravitational field of a cold neutron star is examined. Observation of such states is done with the help of rotating neutron star's magnetic field. Periodically changing magnetic field induces transitions between gravitational states of helium atom and leads to the appearance of gravitational transitions' spectral lines in gigahertz frequency range.

Investigation of heat release in the targets during irradiation by ion beams

The DD-reaction is investigated and the heat emission off the targets during their irradiation with ion beams is studied at the HELIS ion accelerator at LPI. The heat emission is observed to be significantly higher in the case of irradiation of the Ti/TiO2:Dx-targets by a D+ beam, as compared to the H+ and Ne+ beams. Furthermore, it depends on the concentration of deuterium in the target and current density of the deuteron beam.

Channeling Effect in Polycrystalline Deuterium-Saturated CVD Diamond Target Bombarded by Deuterium Ion Beam

At the ion accelerator HELIS at the LPI, the neutron yield is investigated in DD reactions within a polycrystalline deuterium-saturated CVD diamond, during an irradiation of its surface by a deuterium ion beam with the energy less than 30 keV. The measurements of the neutron flux in the beam direction are performed in dependence on the target angle, \b{eta}, with respect to the beam axis. These measurements are performed using a multichannel detector based on He3 counters. A significant anisotropy in neutron yield is observed, it was higher by a factor of 3 at \b{eta}=0 compared to that at \b{eta} = +-45°. The possible reasons for the anisotropy, including ion channeling, are discussed.

A spectroscopy approach to measure the gravitational mass of antihydrogen

We study a method to induce resonant transitions between antihydrogen ($\bar{H}$) quantum states above a material surface in the gravitational field of the Earth. The method consists of applying a gradient of magnetic field, which is temporally oscillating with the frequency equal to a frequency of transition between gravitational states of antihydrogen. A corresponding resonant change in the spatial density of antihydrogen atoms could be measured as a function of the frequency of applied field. We estimate an accuracy of measuring antihydrogen gravitational states spacing and show how a value of the gravitational mass of the $\bar{H}$ atom could be deduced from such a measurement. We also demonstrate that a method of induced transitions could be combined with a free-fall-time measurement in order to further improve the precision.

On the electromagnetic form factors of hadrons in the time-like region near threshold

Hadron electromagnetic form factor in the time-like region at the boundary of the physical region is considered. The energy behavior of the form factor is shown to be determined by the strong hadron-antihadron interaction. Imaginary parts of the scattering lengths for $p\bar{p}$, $Λ\barΛ$, $Λ\barΣ^0 (\barΛΣ^0)$ and $Σ^0\barΣ^0$ are estimated. Developed approach enables us to estimate imaginary part of the scattering volume from $D^*\bar{D^*}$ experimental data. The form factor energy behavior away from the threshold is obtained within a semiphenomenological model of hadron-antihadron interaction.

Electromagnetic form factors of hadrons in the time-like region

Hadron electromagnetic form factors of hadrons in the time-like region at the boundary of the physical region is considered. The energy behaviour of the form factor is shown to be dominantely determined by the strong hadron-antihadron interaction. The scattering length imaginary part for $p-\bar{p}$, $Λ-\barΛ$, $Σ^0-\bar{Σ^0}$ are evaluated. We propose experiments to extract the information on the nearthreshold baryon-antibaryon interaction by using of hadron form foctors.
