Acoustoelectric pumping through a ballistic point contact in the presence of magnetic fields

The acoustoelectric current, J, induced in a ballistic point contact (PC) by a surface acoustic wave is calculated in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field, B. It is found that the dependence of the current on the Fermi energy in the terminals is strongly correlated with that of the PC conductance: J is small at the conductance plateaus, and is large at the steps. Like the conductance, the acoustoelectric current has the same functional behavior as in the absence of the field, but with renormalized energy scales, which depend on the strength of the magnetic field, | B|.

Quantum dots with two electrons: Singlet-triplet transitions

The magnetic character of the ground-state of two electrons on a double quantum dot, connected in series to left and right single-channel leads, is considered. By solving exactly for the spectrum of the two interacting electrons, it is found that the coupling to the continuum of propagating states on the leads, in conjunction with the electron-electron interactions, may result in a delocalization of the bound state of the two electrons. This, in turn, reduces significantly the range of the Coulomb interaction parameters over which singlet-triplet transitions can be realized. It is also found that the coupling to the leads favors the singlet ground-state.

Quantized acoustoelectric current in a finite-length ballistic quantum channel: The noise spectrum

Fluctuations in the acoustoelectric current, induced by a surface acoustic wave propagating along a ballistic quantum channel, are considered. We focus on the large wave-amplitude case, in which it has been experimentally found that the current is quantized, and analyze the noise spectrum. A phenomenological description of the process, in terms of a random pulse sequence, is proposed. The important ingredients of this description are the probabilities, p_n, for a surface acoustic wave well to capture n electrons. It is found that from the noise characteristics one can obtain these probabilities, and also estimate the typical length scales of the regions in which the electrons are trapped.

Pumping at resonant transmission and transferred charge quantization

We consider pumping through a small quantum dot separated from the leads by two point contacts, whose conductances, $G_{1}$ and $G_{2}$, serve as pumping parameters. When the dot is pincched, we find that there is a "resonance line" in the parameter plane $\{G_{1}, G_{2}\}$ along which the Fermi energy in the leads aligns with the energy of the quasi-bound state in the quantum dot. When $G_{1}$ and $G_{2}$ are modulated periodically and adiabatically such that the pumping contour defined by $G_{1}=G_{1}(t)$ and $ G_{2}=G_{2}(t)$ encircles the resonance line, the current is quantized: the charge pumped through the dot during each period of the modulation is close to a single electronic charge.

Neutron Scattering study of Sr_2Cu_3O_4Cl_2

We report a neutron scattering study on the tetragonal compound Sr_2Cu_3O_4Cl_2, which has two-dimensional (2D) interpenetrating Cu_I and Cu_{II} subsystems, each forming a S=1/2 square lattice quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet (SLQHA). The mean-field ground state is degenerate, since the inter-subsystem interactions are geometrically frustrated. Magnetic neutron scattering experiments show that quantum fluctuations lift the degeneracy and cause a 2D Ising ordering of the Cu_{II} subsystem. Due to quantum fluctuations a dramatic increase of the Cu_I out-of-plane spin-wave gap is also observed. The temperature dependence and the dispersion of the spin-wave energy are quantitatively explained by spin-wave calculations which include quantum fluctuations explicitly. The values for the nearest-neighbor superexchange interactions between the Cu_I and Cu_{II} ions and between the Cu_{II} ions are determined experimentally to be J_{I-II} = -10(2)meV and J_{II}= 10.5(5)meV, respectively. Due to its small exchange interaction, J_{II}, the 2D dispersion of the Cu_{II} SLQHA can be measured over the whole Brillouin zone with thermal neutrons, and a novel dispersion at the zone boundary, predicted by theory, is confirmed. The instantaneous magnetic correlation length of the Cu_{II} SLQHA is obtained up to a very high temperature, T/J_{II}\approx 0.75. This result is compared with several theoretical predictions as well as recent experiments on the S=1/2 SLQHA.

Quantum Fluctuations in the Frustrated Antiferromagnet Sr_2Cu_3O_4Cl_2

Sr_2Cu_3O_4Cl_2 is an antiferromagnet consisting of weakly coupled CuO planes which comprise two weakly interacting antiferromagnetic subsystems, I and II, which order at respective temperatures T_I \approx 390K and T_{II} \approx 40K. Except asymptotically near the ordering temperature, these systems are good representations of the two-dimensional quantum spin 1/2 Heisenberg model. For T< T_{II} there are four low-energy modes at zero wave vector, three of whose energies are dominated by quantum fluctuations. For T_{II} < T < T_I there are two low energy modes. The mode with lower energy is dominated by quantum fluctuations. Our calculations of the energies of these modes (including dispersion for wave vectors perpendicular to the CuO planes) agree extremely well with the experimental results of inelastic neutron scattering (in the accompanying paper) and for modes in the sub meV range observed by electron spin resonance. The parameters needed to describe quantum fluctuations are either calculated here or are taken from the literature. These results show that we have a reasonable qualitative understanding of the band structure of the lamellar cuprates needed to calculate the anisotropic exchange constants used here.

Direct Observation of the Quantum Energy Gap in S = 1/2 Tetragonal Cuprate Antiferromagnets

Using an electron spin resonance spectrometer covering a wide range of frequency and magnetic field, we have measured the low energy excitations of the S=1/2 tetragonal antiferromagnets, Sr_{2}CuO_{2}Cl_{2} and Sr_{2}Cu_{3}O_{4}Cl_{2}. Our observation of in-plane energy gaps of order 0.1 meV at zero external magnetic field are consistent with a spin wave calculation, which includes several kinds of quantum fluctuations that remove frustration. Results agree with other experiments and with exchange anisotropy parameters determined from a five band Hubbard model.

Charge occupancy of two interacting electrons on artificial molecules - exact results

We present exact solutions for two interacting electrons on an artificial atom and on an artificial molecule made by one and two (single level) quantum dots connected by ideal leads. Specifically, we calculate the accumulated charge on the dots as function of the gate voltage, for various strengths of the electron-electron interaction and of the hybridization between the dots and the (one-dimensional) leads. With increasing of the (negative) gate voltage, the accumulated charge in the two-electron ground state increases in gradual steps from 0 to 1 and then to 2. The value 0 represents an "insulating" state, where both electrons are bound to shallow states on the impurities. The value of 1 corresponds to a "metal", with one electron localized on the dots and the other extended on the leads. The value of 2 corresponds to another "insulator", with both electrons strongly localized. The width of the "metallic" regime diverges with strength of the electron-electron interaction for the single dot, but remains very narrow for the double dot. These results are contrasted with the simple Coulomb blockade picture.

Acoustoelectric effect in a finite-length ballistic quantum channel

The dc current induced by a coherent surface acoustic wave (SAW) of wave vector q in a ballistic channel of length L is calculated. The current contains two contributions, even and odd in q. The even current exists only in a asymmetric channel, when the electron reflection coefficients r_1 and r_2 at both channel ends are different. The direction of the even current does not depend on the direction of the SAW propagation, but is reversed upon interchanging r_1 and r_2. The direction of the odd current is correlated with the direction of the SAW propagation, but is insensitive to the interchange of r_1 and r_2. It is shown that both contributions to the current are non zero only when the electron reflection coefficients at the channel ends are energy dependent. The current exhibits geometric oscillations as function of qL. These oscillations are the hallmark of the coherence of the SAW and are completely washed out when the current is induced by a flux of non-coherent phonons. The results are compared with those obtained previously by different methods and under different assumptions.

Acoustoelectric current and pumping in a ballistic quantum point contact

The acoustoelectric current induced by a surface acoustic wave (SAW) in a ballistic quantum point contact is considered using a quantum approach. We find that the current is of the "pumping" type and is not related to drag, i.e. to the momentum transfer from the wave to the electron gas. At gate voltages corresponding to the plateaus of the quantized conductance the current is small. It is peaked at the conductance step voltages. The peak current oscillates and decays with increasing SAW wavenumber for short wavelengths. These results contradict previous calculations, based on the classical Boltzmann equation.

Transmission of two interacting electrons

The transmission of two electrons through a region where they interact is found to be enhanced by a renormalization of the repulsive interaction. For a specific example of the single-particle Hamiltonian, which includes a strongly attractive potential, the renormalized interaction becomes attractive, and the transmission has a pronounced maximum as function of the depth of the single-electron attractive potential. The results apply directly to a simple model of scattering of two interacting electrons by a quantum dot.

Competing frustration and dilution effects on the antiferrromagnetism in La(2-x)Sr(x)Cu(1-z)Zn(z)O(4)

The combined effects of hole doping and magnetic dilution on a lamellar Heisenberg antiferromagnet are studied in the framework of the frustration model. Magnetic vacancies are argued to remove some of the frustrating bonds generated by the holes, thus explaining the increase in the temperature and concentration ranges exhibiting three dimensional long range order. The dependence of the Neel temperature on both hole and vacancy concentrations is derived quantitatively from earlier renormalization group calculations for the non--dilute case, and the results reproduce experimental data with no new adjustable parameters.

Exact solution for two interacting electrons on artificial atoms and molecules in solids

We present a general scheme for finding the exact eigenstates of two electrons, with on-site repulsive potentials U_i, on I impurities in a macroscopic crystal. The model describes impurities in doped semiconductors and artificial molecules in quantum dots. For quantum dots, the energy cost for adding two electrons is bounded by the single-electron spectrum, and does not diverge when U_i approaches infinity, implying limitations on the validity of the Coulomb blockade picture. Analytic applications on a one-dimensional chain yield quantum delocalization and magnetic transitions.

Anisotropic Superexchange for nearest and next nearest coppers in chain, ladder and lamellar cuprates

We present a detailed calculation of the magnetic couplings between nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor coppers in the edge-sharing geometry, ubiquitous in many cuprates. In this geometry, the interaction between nearest neighbor coppers is mediated via two oxygens, and the Cu-O-Cu angle is close to 90 degrees. The derivation is based on a perturbation expansion of a general Hubbard Hamiltonian, and produces numerical estimates for the various magnetic energies. In particular we find the dependence of the anisotropy energies on the angular deviation away from the 90 degrees geometry of the Cu-O-Cu bonds. Our results are required for the correct analysis of the magnetic structure of various chain, ladder and lamellar cuprates.

Suppression of antiferromagnetic correlations by quenched dipole--type impurities

The effect of quenched random ferromagnetic bonds on the antiferromagnetic correlation length of a two--dimensional Heisneberg model is studied, applying the renormalization group method to the classical non--linear sigma model with quenched random dipole moments. It is found that the antiferromagnetic long range order is destroyed for any non--zero concentration, of the dipolar defects, even at zero temperature. Below a line T ~ concentration, the correlation length is independent of T, and decreases exponentially with concentration. At higher temperatures, itdecays exponentially with an effective stiffness constant which decreases with concentration/T. The results are used to estimate the three--dimensional Néel temperature, which decays linearly with $x$ at small concentrations, and drops precipitously at a critical concentration. These predictions are compared with experiments on doped copper oxides, and are shown to reproduce successfully some of the prominent features of the data.

Velocity shift of surface acoustic waves due to interaction with composite fermions in a modulated structure

We study the effect of a periodic density modulation on surface acoustic wave (SAW) propagation along a 2D electron gas near Landau level filling $ν=1/2$. Within the composite fermion theory, the problem is described in terms of fermions subject to a spatially modulated magnetic field and scattered by a random magnetic field. We find that a few percent modulation induces a large peak in the SAW velocity shift, as has been observed recently by Willett et al. As further support of this theory we find the dc resistivity to be in good agreement with recent data of Smet et al.

Weiss Oscillations in Surface Acoustic Wave Propagation

The interaction of a surface acoustic wave (SAW) with a a two-dimensional electron gas in a periodic electric potential and a classical magnetic field is considered. We calculate the attenuation of the SAW and its velocity change and show that these quantities exhibit Weiss oscillations.
