BosonSampling with single-photon Fock states from a bright solid-state source

A BosonSampling device is a quantum machine expected to perform tasks intractable for a classical computer, yet requiring minimal non-classical resources as compared to full-scale quantum computers. Photonic implementations to date employed sources based on inefficient processes that only simulate heralded single-photon statistics when strongly reducing emission probabilities. BosonSampling with only single-photon input has thus never been realised. Here, we report on a BosonSampling device operated with a bright solid-state source of single-photon Fock states with high photon-number purity: the emission from an efficient and deterministic quantum dot-micropillar system is demultiplexed into three partially-indistinguishable single-photons, with a single-photon purity $1{-}g^{(2)}(0)$ of $0.990{\pm}0.001$, interfering in a linear optics network. Our demultiplexed source is between one and two orders-of-magnitude more efficient than current heralded multi-photon sources based on spontaneous parametric downconversion, allowing us to complete the BosonSampling experiment faster than previous equivalent implementations.

Quantum dot resonant-fluorescence linewidth narrowing and enhanced intensity

We study the processes in a quantum dot and its surrounds under resonant excitation with the addition of weak non-resonant light. We observe a decrease in inhomogeneous emission linewidth, as well as previously observed enhancement of resonant fluorescence (RF). Scanning excitation and detection frequencies, we distinguish between homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening. Monte Carlo simulations model the enhanced RF only if we include charge-carrier loss from the quantum dot induced by the resonant laser. The cause of the linewidth narrowing is predominantly independent of the enhanced RF.

Scalable performance in solid-state single-photon sources

The desiderata for an ideal photon source are high brightness, high single-photon purity, and high indistinguishability. Defining brightness at the first collection lens, these properties have been simultaneously demonstrated with solid-state sources, however absolute source efficiencies remain close to the 1% level, and indistinguishability only demonstrated for photons emitted consecutively on the few nanosecond scale. Here we employ deterministic quantum dot-micropillar devices to demonstrate solid-state single-photon sources with scalable performance. In one device, an absolute brightness at the output of a single-mode fibre of 14% and purities of 97.1-99.0% are demonstrated. When non-resontantly excited, it emits a long stream of photons that exhibit indistinguishability up to 70%---above the classical limit of 50%---even after 33 consecutively emitted photons, a 400 ns separation between them. Resonant excitation in other devices results in near-optimal indistinguishability values: 96% at short timescales, remaining at 88% in timescales as large as 463 ns, after 39 emitted photons. The performance attained by our devices brings solid-state sources into a regime suitable for scalable implementations.

Highly Sensitive On-Chip Magnetometer with Saturable Absorbers in Two-Color Microcavities

Interacting resonators can lead to strong non-linearities but the details can be complicated to predict. In this work, we study the non-linearities introduced by two nested microcavities that interact with nitrogen vacancy centers in a diamond waveguide. Each cavity has differently designed resonance; one in the green and one in the infrared. The magnetic-field dependence of the nitrogen vacancy center absorption rates on the green and the recently observed infrared transitions allows us to propose a scalable on-chip magnetometer that combines high magnetic-field sensitivity and micrometer spatial resolution. By investigating the system behaviors over several intrinsic and extrinsic parameters, we explain the main non-linearities induced by the NV centers and enhanced by the cavities. We finally show that the cavities can improve the magnetic-field sensitivity by up to two orders of magnitudes.

Probing the dynamics of a nuclear spin bath in diamond through time-resolved central spin magnetometry

Using fast electron spin resonance spectroscopy of a single nitrogen-vacancy defect in diamond, we demonstrate real-time readout of the Overhauser field produced by its nuclear spin environment under ambient conditions. These measurements enable narrowing the Overhauser field distribution by post-selection, corresponding to a conditional preparation of the nuclear spin bath. Correlations of the Overhauser field fluctuations are quantitatively inferred by analysing the Allan deviation over consecutive measurements. This method allows to extract the dynamics of weakly coupled nuclear spins of the reservoir.

An entangling quantum-logic gate operated with an ultrabright single photon-source

We demonstrate unambiguous entangling operation of a photonic quantum-logic gate driven by an ultrabright solid-state single-photon source. Indistinguishable single photons emitted by a single semiconductor quantum dot in a micropillar optical cavity are used as target and control qubits. For a source brightness of 0.56 collected photons-per-pulse, the measured truth table has an overlap with the ideal case of 68.4%, increasing to 73.0% for a source brightness of 0.17 photons- per-pulse. The gate is entangling: at a source brightness of 0.48, the Bell-state fidelity is above the entangling threshold of 50%, and reaches 71.0% for a source brightness of 0.15.

Full control of spontaneous emission in confined Tamm plasmon structures

We demonstrate strong confinement of the optical field by depositing a micron sized metallic disk on a planar interferential mirror. Zero dimensional Tamm plasmon modes are evidenced both experimentally and theoretically, with a lateral confinement limited to the disk area and strong coupling to TE polarized fields. Single quantum dots deterministically coupled to these modes are shown to experience acceleration of their spontaneous emission when spectrally resonant with the mode. For quantum dots spectrally detuned from the confined Tamm Plasmon mode, an inhibition of spontaneous emission by a factor 40 is observed, a record value in the optical domain.
