Integrable random matrix ensembles

We propose new classes of random matrix ensembles whose statistical properties are intermediate between statistics of Wigner-Dyson random matrices and Poisson statistics. The construction is based on integrable N-body classical systems with a random distribution of momenta and coordinates of the particles. The Lax matrices of these systems yield random matrix ensembles whose joint distribution of eigenvalues can be calculated analytically thanks to integrability of the underlying system. Formulas for spacing distributions and level compressibility are obtained for various instances of such ensembles.

Hearing shapes of drums - mathematical and physical aspects of isospectrality

In a celebrated paper '"Can one hear the shape of a drum?"' M. Kac [Amer. Math. Monthly 73, 1 (1966)] asked his famous question about the existence of nonisometric billiards having the same spectrum of the Laplacian. This question was eventually answered positively in 1992 by the construction of noncongruent planar isospectral pairs. This review highlights mathematical and physical aspects of isospectrality.

Multiqubit symmetric states with high geometric entanglement

We propose a detailed study of the geometric entanglement properties of pure symmetric N-qubit states, focusing more particularly on the identification of symmetric states with a high geometric entanglement and how their entanglement behaves asymptotically for large N. We show that much higher geometric entanglement with improved asymptotical behavior can be obtained in comparison with the highly entangled balanced Dicke states studied previously. We also derive an upper bound for the geometric measure of entanglement of symmetric states. The connection with the quantumness of a state is discussed.

Spectral properties of the Google matrix of the World Wide Web and other directed networks

We study numerically the spectrum and eigenstate properties of the Google matrix of various examples of directed networks such as vocabulary networks of dictionaries and university World Wide Web networks. The spectra have gapless structure in the vicinity of the maximal eigenvalue for Google damping parameter $α$ equal to unity. The vocabulary networks have relatively homogeneous spectral density, while university networks have pronounced spectral structures which change from one university to another, reflecting specific properties of the networks. We also determine specific properties of eigenstates of the Google matrix, including the PageRank. The fidelity of the PageRank is proposed as a new characterization of its stability.

Entanglement and localization of wavefunctions

We review recent works that relate entanglement of random vectors to their localization properties. In particular, the linear entropy is related by a simple expression to the inverse participation ratio, while next orders of the entropy of entanglement contain information about e.g. the multifractal exponents. Numerical simulations show that these results can account for the entanglement present in wavefunctions of physical systems.

Random matrix ensembles associated with Lax matrices

A method to generate new classes of random matrix ensembles is proposed. Random matrices from these ensembles are Lax matrices of classically integrable systems with a certain distribution of momenta and coordinates. The existence of an integrable structure permits to calculate the joint distribution of eigenvalues for these matrices analytically. Spectral statistics of these ensembles are quite unusual and in many cases give rigorously new examples of intermediate statistics.

Quantum computation of multifractal exponents through the quantum wavelet transform

We study the use of the quantum wavelet transform to extract efficiently information about the multifractal exponents for multifractal quantum states. We show that, combined with quantum simulation algorithms, it enables to build quantum algorithms for multifractal exponents with a polynomial gain compared to classical simulations. Numerical results indicate that a rough estimate of fractality could be obtained exponentially fast. Our findings are relevant e.g. for quantum simulations of multifractal quantum maps and of the Anderson model at the metal-insulator transition.

Quantum computing of semiclassical formulas

We show that semiclassical formulas such as the Gutzwiller trace formula can be implemented on a quantum computer more efficiently than on a classical device. We give explicit quantum algorithms which yield quantum observables from classical trajectories, and which alternatively test the semiclassical approximation by computing classical actions from quantum evolution. The gain over classical computation is in general quadratic, and can be larger in some specific cases.

Multifractality and intermediate statistics in quantum maps

We study multifractal properties of wave functions for a one-parameter family of quantum maps displaying the whole range of spectral statistics intermediate between integrable and chaotic statistics. We perform extensive numerical computations and provide analytical arguments showing that the generalized fractal dimensions are directly related to the parameter of the underlying classical map, and thus to other properties such as spectral statistics. Our results could be relevant for Anderson and quantum Hall transitions, where wave functions also show multifractality.

Entanglement of localized states

We derive exact expressions for the mean value of Meyer-Wallach entanglement Q for localized random vectors drawn from various ensembles corresponding to different physical situations. For vectors localized on a randomly chosen subset of the basis, tends for large system sizes to a constant which depends on the participation ratio, whereas for vectors localized on adjacent basis states it goes to zero as a constant over the number of qubits. Applications to many-body systems and Anderson localization are discussed.

Purity distribution for bipartite random pure states

Analytic expressions for the probability density distribution of the linear entropy and the purity are derived for bipartite pure random quantum states. The explicit distributions for a state belonging to a product of Hilbert spaces of dimensions p and q are given for p=3 and any q>=3, as well as for p=q=4.

Intermediate quantum maps for quantum computation

We study quantum maps displaying spectral statistics intermediate between Poisson and Wigner-Dyson. It is shown that they can be simulated on a quantum computer with a small number of gates, and efficiently yield information about fidelity decay or spectral statistics. We study their matrix elements and entanglement production, and show that they converge with time to distributions which differ from random matrix predictions. A randomized version of these maps can be implemented even more economically, and yields pseudorandom operators with original properties, enabling for example to produce fractal random vectors. These algorithms are within reach of present-day quantum computers.

Quantum computing of delocalization in small-world networks

We study a quantum small-world network with disorder and show that the system exhibits a delocalization transition. A quantum algorithm is built up which simulates the evolution operator of the model in a polynomial number of gates for exponential number of vertices in the network. The total computational gain is shown to depend on the parameters of the network and a larger than quadratic speed-up can be reached. We also investigate the robustness of the algorithm in presence of imperfections.

Nearest-neighbor distribution for singular billiards

The exact computation of the nearest-neighbor spacing distribution P(s) is performed for a rectangular billiard with point-like scatterer inside for periodic and Dirichlet boundary conditions and it is demonstrated that for large s this function decreases exponentially. Together with the results of [Bogomolny et al., Phys. Rev. E 63, 036206 (2001)] it proves that spectral statistics of such systems is of intermediate type characterized by level repulsion at small distances and exponential fall-off of the nearest-neighbor distribution at large distances. The calculation of the n-th nearest-neighbor spacing distribution and its asymptotics is performed as well for any boundary conditions.

Semi-classical calculations of the two-point correlation form factor for diffractive systems

The computation of the two-point correlation form factor K(t) is performed for a rectangular billiard with a small size impurity inside for both periodic or Dirichlet boundary conditions. It is demonstrated that all terms of perturbation expansion of this form factor in powers of t can be computed directly by semiclassical trace formula. The main part of the calculation is the summation of non-diagonal terms in the cross product of classical orbits. When the diffraction coefficient is a constant our results coincide with expansion of exact expressions ontained by a different method.

Periodic orbits contribution to the 2-point correlation form factor for pseudo-integrable systems

The 2-point correlation form factor, $K_2(τ)$, for small values of $τ$ is computed analytically for typical examples of pseudo-integrable systems. This is done by explicit calculation of periodic orbit contributions in the diagonal approximation. The following cases are considered: (i) plane billiards in the form of right triangles with one angle $π/n$ and (ii) rectangular billiards with the Aharonov-Bohm flux line. In the first model, using the properties of the Veech structure, it is shown that $K_2(0)=(n+ε(n))/(3(n-2))$ where $ε(n)=0$ for odd $n$, $ε(n)=2$ for even $n$ not divisible by 3, and $ε(n)=6$ for even $n$ divisible by 3. For completeness we also recall informally the main features of the Veech construction. In the second model the answer depends on arithmetical properties of ratios of flux line coordinates to the corresponding sides of the rectangle. When these ratios are non-commensurable irrational numbers, $K_2(0)=1-3\barα+4\barα^2$ where $\barα$ is the fractional part of the flux through the rectangle when $0\le \barα\le 1/2$ and it is symmetric with respect to the line $\barα=1/2$ when $1/2 \le \barα\le 1$. The comparison of these results with numerical calculations of the form factor is discussed in detail. The above values of $K_2(0)$ differ from all known examples of spectral statistics, thus confirming analytically the peculiarities of statistical properties of the energy levels in pseudo-integrable systems.
