High harmonic generation in an active grating

We study theoretically and experimentally High Harmonic Generation (HHG) using two non collinear driving fields focused in gases. We show that these two fields form a non stationary blazed active grating in the generation medium. The intensity and phase structure of this grating rule the far field properties of the emission, such as the relative amplitude of the diffraction orders. Full macroscopic calculations and experiments support this general analysis. This insight into the HHG process allows us to envision new structuration schemes to convert femtosecond lasers to attosecond pulses with increased efficiency.

Synthesis and characterization of attosecond light vortices in the extreme ultraviolet

Infrared and visible light beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are currently thoroughly studied for their extremely broad applicative prospects, among which are quantum information, micromachining and diagnostic tools. Here we extend these prospects, presenting a comprehensive study for the synthesis and full characterization of optical vortices carrying OAM in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) domain. We confirm the upconversion rules of a femtosecond infrared helically phased beam into its high-order harmonics, showing that each harmonic order carries the total number of OAM units absorbed in the process up to very high orders (57). This allows us to synthesize and characterize helically shaped XUV trains of attosecond pulses. To demonstrate a typical use of these new XUV light beams, we show our ability to generate and control, through photoionization, attosecond electron beams carrying OAM. These breakthroughs pave the route for the study of a series of fundamental phenomena and the development of new ultrafast diagnosis tools using either photonic or electronic vortices.

Phase distortions of attosecond pulses produced by resonance-enhanced high harmonic generation

Resonant enhancement of high harmonic generation can be obtained in plasmas containing ions with strong radiative transitions resonant with harmonic orders. The mechanism for this enhancement is still debated. We perform the first temporal characterization of the attosecond emission from a tin plasma under near-resonant conditions for two different resonance detunings. We show that the resonance considerably changes the relative phase of neighbouring harmonics. For very small detunings, their phase locking may even be lost, evidencing strong phase distortions in the emission process and a modified attosecond structure. These features are well reproduced by our simulations, allowing their interpretation in terms of the phase of the recombination dipole moment.

Low intensity threshold values for keV X-ray production in laser-cluster interaction

Absolute Ar XK (3 keV) and Xe XL (4 keV) photon yields are measured as a function of laser peak intensity, for large (104 - 105 atoms) argon and xenon clusters submitted to intense laser pulses. A clear threshold behavior is observed. The intensity threshold is found as low as 2 1014 Wcm-2, a value matching the production of singly-charged argon or doubly-charged xenon by optical field ionization. Possible mechanisms involved in the inner-shell ionization are discussed. The outcome on the optimization of keV X-ray production is underlined.
