Indirect Constraints on the Triple Gauge Boson Couplings from $Z \to b \bar{b}$ Partial Width: An Update

We update the indirect bounds on anomalous triple gauge couplings coming from the non-universal one-loop contributions to the $Z \to b \bar{b}$ width. These bounds, which are independent of the Higgs boson mass, are in agreement with the standard model predictions for the gauge boson self-couplings since the present value of $R_b$ agrees fairly well with the theoretical estimates. Moreover, these indirect constraints on $Δg^Z_1$ and $g^Z_5$ are more stringent than the present direct bounds on these quantities, while the indirect limit on $λ_Z$ is weaker than the available experimental data.

Signal and Backgrounds for Leptoquarks at the LHC II: Vector Leptoquarks

We perform a detailed analyses of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) capability to discover first generation vector leptoquarks through their pair production. We study the leptoquark signals and backgrounds that give rise to final states containing a pair e+e- and jets. Our results show that the LHC will be able to discover vector leptoquarks with masses up to 1.3-2.1 TeV depending on their couplings to fermions and gluons.

Hunting a Light U(1)_B Gauge Boson Coupled to Baryon Number in Collider Experiments

We analyze several signals at HERA and the Tevatron of a light $U(1)_B$ gauge boson ($γ_B$) coupling to baryon number. We show that the study of the production of $b \bar{b}$ pairs at the (upgraded) Tevatron can exclude $γ_B$ with masses ($m_B$) in the range $40 \lesssim m_B \lesssim 300$ GeV for $γ_B$ couplings ($α_B$) greater than $2 \times 10^{-2}$ ($3 \times 10^{-3}$). We also show that the HERA experiments cannot improve the present bounds on $γ_B$. Moreover, we demonstrate that the production at HERA and the Tevatron of di--jet events with large rapidity gaps between the jets cannot be explained by the existence of a light $γ_B$.

Multilepton Signatures for Leptoquarks

The production of third generation leptoquarks can give rise to multilepton events accompanied by jets and missing transverse energy. In this work we study the signals of these leptoquarks at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and compare them with the ones expected in supersymmetric models.

R--Parity Violating Signals for Chargino Production at LEP II

We study chargino pair production at LEP II in supersymmetric models with spontaneously broken R-parity. We perform signal and background analyses, showing that a large region of the parameter space of these models can be probed through chargino searches at LEP II. In particular, we determine the attainable limits on the chargino mass as a function of the magnitude of the effective bilinear R-parity violation parameter $ε$, demonstrating that LEP II is able to unravel the existence of charginos with masses almost up to its kinematical limit even in the case of R-parity violation. This requires the study of several final state topologies since the usual MSSM chargino signature is recovered as $ε\to 0$. Moreover, for sufficiently large $ε$ values, for which the chargino decay mode $χ^\pm \to τ^\pm J$ dominates, we find through a dedicated Monte Carlo analysis that the $χ^\pm$ mass bounds are again very close to the kinematic limit. Our results establish the robustness of the chargino mass limit, in the sense that it is basically model-independent. They also show that LEP II can establish the existence of spontaneous R-parity violation in a large region of parameter space should charginos be produced.

Signal and Backgrounds for the Single Production of Scalar and Vector Leptoquarks at the LHC

We perform a detailed analysis of the potentiality of the CERN Large Hadron Collider to study the single production of leptoquarks via $pp \to e^\pm q\to$ leptoquark $\to e^\pm q$, with $e^\pm$ generated by the splitting of photons radiated by the protons. Working with the most general $SU(2)_L \otimes U(1)_Y$ invariant effective lagrangian for scalar and vector leptoquarks, we analyze in detail the leptoquark signals and backgrounds that lead to a final state containing an $e^\pm$ and a hard jet with approximately balanced transverse momenta. Our results indicate that the LHC will be able to discover leptoquarks with masses up to 2--3 TeV, depending on their type, for Yukawa couplings of the order of the electromagnetic one.

Strongly Interacting Vector Bosons at the LHC: Quartic Anomalous Couplings

We analyze the potential of the CERN Large Hadron Collider to study anomalous quartic vector--boson interactions through the production of vector--boson pairs accompanied by jets. In the framework of $SU(2)_L \otimes U(1)_Y$ chiral Lagrangians, we examine all effective operators of order $p^4$ that lead to new four--gauge--boson interactions but do not alter trilinear vertices. In our analyses, we perform the full tree level calculation of the processes leading to two jets plus vector--boson pairs, $W^+W^-$, $W^\pm W^\pm$, $W^\pm Z$, or $ZZ$, taking properly into account the interference between the standard model and the anomalous contributions. We obtain the bounds that can be placed on the anomalous quartic interactions and we study the strategies to distinguish the possible new couplings.

Inelastic Photoproduction at HERA: a Second Charmonium Crisis?

The measurement of the inelastic photoproduction of charmonium at HERA seems to have ignited a new charmonium crisis. The (already discredited) color singlet model fits the data for large charmonium energy fraction z, where the NRQCD model qualitatively fails. We here point out that by the straightforward inclusion of color singlet and octet processes in the soft color (color evaporation) scheme, the HERA data can be accommodated for all z. We anticipate that the color singlet model will fail at low z, as it does in hadroproduction.

Bounds on Higgs and Gauge--Boson Interactions from LEP2 Data

We derive bounds on Higgs and gauge--boson anomalous interactions using the LEP2 data on the production of three photons and photon pairs in association with hadrons. In the framework of $SU(2)_L \otimes U(1)_Y$ effective Lagrangians, we examine all dimension--six operators that lead to anomalous Higgs interactions involving $γ$ and $Z$. The search for Higgs boson decaying to $γγ$ pairs allow us to obtain constrains on these anomalous couplings that are comparable with the ones originating from the analyses of $p\bar{p}$ collisions at the Tevatron. Our results also show that if the coefficients of all ``blind'' operators are assumed to have same magnitude, the indirect constraints on the anomalous couplings obtained from this analyses, for Higgs masses $M_H \lesssim$ 140 GeV, are more restrictive than the ones coming from the $W^+W^-$ production.

Tests of Anomalous Quartic Couplings at the NLC

We analyze the potential of the Next Linear $e^+e^-$ Collider to study anomalous quartic vector-boson interactions through the processes $e^+ e^- \to W^+W^-Z$ and $ZZZ$. In the framework of $SU(2)_L \otimes U(1)_Y$ chiral Lagrangians, we examine all effective operators of order $p^4$ that lead to four-gauge-boson interactions but do not induce anomalous trilinear vertices. In our analysis, we take into account the decay of the vector bosons to fermions and evaluate the efficiency in their reconstruction. We obtain the bounds that can be placed on the anomalous quartic interactions and we study the strategies to distinguish the possible couplings.

Limits on Anomalous Top Couplings from Z Pole Physics

We obtain constraints on possible anomalous interactions of the top quark with the electroweak vector bosons arising from the precision measurements at the Z pole. In the framework of $SU(2)_L \otimes U(1)_Y$ chiral Lagrangians, we examine all effective CP-conserving operators of dimension five which induce fermionic currents involving the top quark. We constrain the magnitudes of these anomalous interactions by evaluating their one-loop contributions to the Z pole physics. Our analysis shows that the operators that contribute to the LEP observables get bounds close to the theoretical expectation for their anomalous couplings. We also show that those which break the $SU(2)_C$ custodial symmetry are more strongly bounded.

Are Two Gluons the QCD Pomeron?

Collider experiments have recently measured the production cross section of hard jets separated by a rapidity gap as a function of transverse momentum and gap size. We show that these measurements reveal the relative frequencies for the production of rapidity gaps in quark-quark, quark-gluon and gluon-gluon interactions. The results are at variance with the idea that the exchange of 2 gluons is a first order approximation for the mechanism producing colorless states, i.e. the hard QCD Pomeron. They do qualitatively support the "soft color" or "color evaporation" scheme developed in the context of bound-state heavy quark production.

Z Physics Constraints on Vector Leptoquarks

We analyze the constraints on vector leptoquarks coming from radiative corrections to $Z$ physics. We perform a global fitting to the LEP data including the oblique and non-universal contributions of the most general effective Lagrangian for vector leptoquarks, which exhibits the $SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$ gauge invariance. We show that the $Z$ physics leads to stronger bounds on second and third generation vectors leptoquarks than the ones obtained from low energy and the current collider experiments.

(No) Color in QCD: Charmonium, Charm and Rapidity Gaps

The reason why some data on the production of $ψ$- and $Υ$-states disagree with QCD predictions, occasionally by well over one order of magnitude, is that the traditional method for performing the perturbative calculation of the cross section is simply wrong. The key mistake is to require that the heavy quark pair forms a color singlet at short distances, given that there is an infinite time for soft gluons to readjust the color of the $c \bar c$ pair before it appears as an asymptotic $ψ$ or, alternatively, $D \bar D$ state. We suspect that the same mistake is made in the description of rapidity gaps, i.e.\ the production of a color-neutral quark-antiquark pair, in terms of the exchange of a color neutral gluon pair. The $ψ$ is after all a color neutral $c \bar c$ pair and we will show that it is produced by the same dynamics as $D \bar D$ pairs; its color happens to be bleached by soft final-state interactions. This approach to color is suggestive of the unorthodox prescription for the production of rapidity gaps in deep inelastic scattering, proposed by Buchmüller and Hebecker. When applied to the formation of gaps between a pair of high transverse momentum jets in hadron collisions, the soft color approach suggests a formation rate of gaps in gluon-gluon subprocesses which is similar or smaller than in quark-quark induced events. Formation of gaps should increase when increasing transverse momentum or lowering energy, in contrast with 2-gluon exchange Pomeron models.

Prompt Charmonium Production in Z Decays

The color-evaporation model quantitatively describes all data on photoproduction and hadroproduction of charmonium. Although the model is in part nonperturbative, the associated parameters can for instance be determined from the charmonium photoproduction data. At this point its predictions for the prompt production of $ψ$'s at the $Z$ pole are made with no free parameters. We show here that this approach successfully describes all data on the production of prompt $ψ$'s in $Z$ decays.

Quantitative Tests of Color Evaporation: Charmonium Production

The color evaporation model simply states that charmonium production is described by the same dynamics as $D \bar D$ production, {\em i.e.}, by the formation of a colored $c \bar c$ pair. Its color happens to be bleached by soft final-state interactions. We show that the model gives a complete picture of charmonium production including low-energy production by proton, photon and antiproton beams, and high-energy production at the Tevatron and HERA. Our analysis includes the first next-to-leading-order calculation in the color evaporation model.
