Space-time coupling in the up-conversion of broadband down-converted light

We investigate the up-conversion process of broadband light from parametric down-conversion (PDC), focusing on the spatio-temporal spectral properties of the sum-frequency generated (SFG) radiation. We demonstrate that the incoherent component of the SFG spectrum is characterized by a skewed cigar-shaped geometry in space-time due to the compensation of spatial walk-off and group-velocity mismatch between the fundamental and the generated SFG fields. The results are illustrated both by a theoretical modeling of the optical system and by experimental measurements.

Experimental observation of the X-shaped near field spatio-temporal correlation of ultra-broadband twin beams

In this work we present the experimental observation of the non factorable near field spatio-temporal correlation of ultra-broadband twin beams generated by parametric down conversion (PDC), in an interferometric-type experiment using sum frequency generation, where both the temporal and spatial degrees of freedom of PDC light are controlled with very high resolution. The revealed X-structure of the correlation is in accordance with the predictions of the theory.

Detection of the ultranarrow temporal correlation of twin beams via sum-frequency generation

We demonstrate the ultranarrow temporal correlation (6 fs full width half maximum) of twin beams generated by parametric down-conversion, by using the inverse process of sum-frequency generation. The result relies on an achromatic imaging of a huge bandwith of twin beams and on a careful control of their spatial degrees of freedom. The detrimental effects of spatial filtering and of imperfect imaging are shown toghether with the theoretical model used to describe the results.

X-entanglement of PDC photon pairs

We investigate the spatio-temporal structure of the bi-photon entanglement in parametric down-conversion (PDC) and we demonstrate its non-factorable X-shaped geometry. Such a structure gives access to the ultra-broad bandwidth of PDC, and can be exploited to achieve a bi-photon temporal localization in the femtosecond range. This extreme localization is connected to our ability to resolve the photon positions in the source near-field. The non factorability opens the possibility of tailoring the temporal entanglement by acting on the spatial degrees of freedom of twin photons.

High-sensitivity imaging with multi-mode twin beams

Twin entangled beams produced by single-pass parametric down-conversion (PDC) offer the opportunity to detect weak amount of absorption with an improved sensitivity with respect to standard techniques which make use of classical light sources. We propose a differential measurement scheme which exploits the spatial quantum correlation of type II PDC to image a weak amplitude object with a sensitivity beyond the standard quantum limit imposed by shot-noise.

Quantum spatial correlations in high-gain parametric down-conversion measured by means of a CCD camera

We consider travelling-wave parametric down-conversion in the high-gain regime and present the experimental demonstration of the quantum character of the spatial fluctuations in the system. In addition to showing the presence of sub-shot noise fluctuations in the intensity difference, we demonstrate that the peak value of the normalized spatial correlations between signal and idler lies well above the line marking the boundary between the classical and the quantum domain. This effect is equivalent to the apparent violation of the Cauchy-Schwartz inequality, predicted by some of us years ago, which represents a spatial analogue of photon antibunching in time. Finally, we analyse numerically the transition from the quantum to the classical regime when the gain is increased and we emphasize the role of the inaccuracy in the determination of the symmetry center of the signal/idler pattern in the far-field plane.

Detection of sub-shot-noise spatial correlation in high-gain parametric down-conversion

Using a 1GW-1ps pump laser pulse in high gain parametric down-conversion allows us to detect sub-shot-noise spatial quantum correlation with up to one hundred photoelectrons per mode, by means of a high efficiency CCD. The statistics is performed in single-shot over independent spatial replica of the system. The paper highlights the evidence of quantum correlation between symmetrical signal and idler spatial areas in the far field, in the high gain regime. In accordance with the predictions of numerical calculations the observed transition from the quantum to the classical regime is interpreted as a consequence of the narrowing of the down-converted beams in the very high gain regime.

Noise-seeded spatio-temporal modulation instability in normal dispersion

In optical second harmonic generation with normal dispersion, the virtually infinite bandwidth of the unbounded, hyperbolic, modulational instability leads to quenching of spatial multi-soliton formation and to the occurrence of a catastrophic spatio-temporal break-up when an extended beam is let to interact with an extremely weak external noise with coherence time much shorter than that of the pump.

Spontaneously generated X-shaped light bullets

We observe the formation of an intense optical wavepacket fully localized in all dimensions, i.e. both longitudinally (in time) and in the transverse plane, with an extension of a few tens of fsec and microns, respectively. Our measurements show that the self-trapped wave is a X-shaped light bullet spontaneously generated from a standard laser wavepacket via the nonlinear material response (i.e., second-harmonic generation), which extend the soliton concept to a new realm, where the main hump coexists with conical tails which reflect the symmetry of linear dispersion relationship.

Electromagnetic nonlinear X-waves

Nonlinear optical media that are normally dispersive, support a new type of localized (nondiffractive and nondispersive) wavepackets that are X-shaped in space and time and have slower than exponential decay. High-intensity X-waves, unlike linear ones, can be formed spontaneously through a trigger mechanism of conical emission, thus playing an important role in experiments.

Coloured conical emission via second-harmonic generation

We predict that the combination of space and time modulational instabilities occuring via parametric wave-mixing in quadratic media leads to coloured conical emission. This phenomenon should be observed under conditions usually employed in second-harmonic generation experiments.
