Status of the International Linear Collider

This paper is not a proposal for a CERN future project but provides information on the International Linear Collider (ILC) considered for Japan in order to facilitate the European Strategy discussion in a global context. It describes progress to date, ongoing engineering studies, updated cost estimate for the machine at $\sqrt{s}=250~\rm GeV$ and the situation in Japan. The physics of the ILC is not presented here, but jointly for all Linear Collider projects in a separate document ``A Linear Collider Vision for the Future of Particle Physics'' submitted for the forthcoming European Strategy deliberations.

Search for the correction term to the Fermi's golden rule in positron annihilation

In the positron-electron annihilation process, finite deviations from the standard calculation based on the Fermi's Golden rule are suggested in recent theoretical work. This paper describes an experimental test of the predictions of this theoretical work by searching for events with two photons from positron annihilation of energy larger than the electron rest mass ($511\,{\rm keV}$). The positrons came from a ${\rm {}^{22}Na}$ source, tagging the third photon from the spontaneous emission of ${\rm {}^{22}{Ne}^*}$ de-exitation to suppress backgrounds. Using the collected sample of $1.06\times 10^{7}$ positron-electron annihilations, triple coincidence photon events in the signal enhanced energy regions are examined. The observed number of events in two signal regions, $N^{\rm SR1}_{\rm obs}=0$ and $N^{\rm SR2}_{\rm obs}=0$ are, within a current precision, consistent with the expected number of events, $N^{\rm SR1}_{\rm exp}=0.86\pm0.08({\rm stat.})^{+1.85}_{-0.81}({\rm syst.})$ and $N^{\rm SR2}_{\rm exp}=0.37\pm 0.05({\rm stat.})^{+0.80}_{-0.29}({\rm syst.})$ from Fermi's golden rule respectively. Based on the $P^{(d)}$ modeling, the 90% CL lower limit on the photon wave packet size is obtained.

Planar Pixel Sensors for the ATLAS Upgrade: Beam Tests results

Results of beam tests with planar silicon pixel sensors aimed towards the ATLAS Insertable B-Layer and High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) upgrades are presented. Measurements include spatial resolution, charge collection performance and charge sharing between neighbouring cells as a function of track incidence angle for different bulk materials. Measurements of n-in-n pixel sensors are presented as a function of fluence for different irradiations. Furthermore p-type silicon sensors from several vendors with slightly differing layouts were tested. All tested sensors were connected by bump-bonding to the ATLAS Pixel read-out chip. We show that both n-type and p-type tested planar sensors are able to collect significant charge even after integrated fluences expected at HL-LHC.

Searches for SUSY with the ATLAS detector

We present a review of the SUSY search strategies in ATLAS in conjunction with a readiness of the detector systems for first collision data in 2009 fall. Commissioning was performed with the LHC single beams and the cosmic ray data in 2008. The talk covers the analysis strategies based on the large Etmiss plus high pT multi-jets signature in which the number of methods are investigated to extract background estimation from real data. The expected discovery reach with inclusive analysis is shown. The review also covers the special signature searches for certain SUSY scenarios, where specific detector components play a crucial role in detecting and measuring them.

Absolute polarimetry at RHIC

Precise and absolute beam polarization measurements are critical for the RHIC spin physics program. Because all experimental spin-dependent results are normalized by beam polarization, the normalization uncertainty contributes directly to final physics uncertainties. We aimed to perform the beam polarization measurement to an accuracy of $ΔP_{beam}/P_{beam} < 5%$. The absolute polarimeter consists of Polarized Atomic Hydrogen Gas Jet Target and left-right pairs of silicon strip detectors and was installed in the RHIC-ring in 2004. This system features \textit{proton-proton} elastic scattering in the Coulomb nuclear interference (CNI) region. Precise measurements of the analyzing power $A_N$ of this process has allowed us to achieve $ΔP_{beam}/P_{beam} =4.2%$ in 2005 for the first long spin-physics run. In this report, we describe the entire set up and performance of the system. The procedure of beam polarization measurement and analysis results from 2004-2005 are described. Physics topics of $A_N$ in the CNI region (four-momentum transfer squared $0.001 < -t < 0.032 ~ ({\rm GeV}/c)^2$) are also discussed. We point out the current issues and expected optimum accuracy in 2006 and the future.

Measurements of Single and Double Spin Asymmetry in \textit{pp} Elastic Scattering in the CNI Region with Polarized Hydrogen Gas Jet Target

Precise measurements of the single spin asymmetry, $A_N$ and the double spin asymmetry, $A_{NN}$, in proton-proton (\textit{pp}) elastic scattering in the region of four-momentum transfer squared $0.001 < -t < 0.032 ({\rm GeV}/c)^2$ have been performed using a polarized atomic hydrogen gas jet target and the RHIC polarized proton beam at 24 GeV/$c$ and 100 GeV/$c$. The polarized gaseous proton target allowed us to achieve the measurement of $A_{NN}$ in the CNI region for the first time. Our results of $A_N$ and $A_{NN}$ provide significant constraints to determine the magnitude of poorly known hadronic single and double spin-flip amplitudes at this energy.

Absolute Polarization Measurements at RHIC in the Coulomb Nuclear Interference Region

The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory provides polarized proton beams for the investigation of the nucleon spin structure. For polarimetry, carbon-proton and proton-proton scattering is used in the Coulomb nuclear interference region at small momentum transfer ($-t$). Fast polarization measurements of each beam are carried out with carbon fiber targets at several times during an accelerator store. A polarized hydrogen gas jet target is needed for absolute normalization over multiple stores, while the target polarization is constantly monitored in a Breit-Rabi polarimeter. In 2005, the jet polarimeter has been used with both RHIC beams. We present results from the jet polarimeter including a detailed analysis of background contributions to asymmetries and to the beam polarization.

Measurement of the Analyzing Power $A_N$ in $pp$ Elastic Scattering in the CNI Region with a Polarized Atomic Hydrogen Gas Jet Target

A precise measurement of the analyzing power $A_N$ in proton-proton elastic scattering in the region of 4-momentum transfer squared $0.001 < |t| < 0.032 ({\rm GeV}/c)^2$ has been performed using a polarized atomic hydrogen gas jet target and the 100 GeV/$c$ RHIC proton beam. The interference of the electromagnetic spin-flip amplitude with a hadronic spin-nonflip amplitude is predicted to generate a significant $A_N$ of 4--5%, peaking at $-t \simeq 0.003 ({\rm GeV}/c)^2$. This kinematic region is known as the Coulomb Nuclear Interference region. A possible hadronic spin-flip amplitude modifies this otherwise calculable prediction. Our data are well described by the CNI prediction with the electromagnetic spin-flip alone and do not support the presence of a large hadronic spin-flip amplitude.

Measurement of the analyzing power of proton-carbon elastic scattering in the CNI region at RHIC

The single transverse spin asymmetry, A_N, of the p-carbon elastic scattering process in the Coulomb Nuclear Interference (CNI) region was measured using an ultra thin carbon target and polarized proton beam in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). In 2004, data were collected to calibrate the p-carbon process at two RHIC energies (24 GeV, 100 GeV). A_N was obtained as a function of momentum transfer -t. The results were fit with theoretical models which allow us to assess the contribution from a hadronic spin flip amplitude.

Solution of Orthopositronium lifetime Puzzle

The intrinsic decay rate of orthopositronium formed in ${\rm SiO_2}$ powder is measured using the direct $2γ$ correction method such that the time dependence of the pick-off annihilation rate is precisely determined. The decay rate of orthopositronium is found to be $7.0396\pm0.0012 (stat.)\pm0.0011 (sys.)μs^{-1}$, which is consistent with our previous measurements with about twice the accuracy. Results agree well with the $O(α^2)$ QED prediction, and also with a result reported very recently using nanoporous film.

Precision Measurement of Orthopositronium Decay Rate Using SiO_2 Powder

The intrinsic decay rate of orthopositronium formed in ${\rm SiO_2}$ powder is measured using the direct $2γ$ correction method such that the time dependence of the pick-off annihilation rate is precisely determined using high energy-resolution germanium detectors. As a systematic test, two different types of ${\rm SiO_2}$ powder are used with consistent findings. The intrinsic decay rate of orthopositronium is found to be $7.0396\pm0.0012 (stat.)\pm0.0011 (sys.)μs^{-1}$, which is consistent with previous measurements using ${\rm SiO_2}$ powder with about twice the accuracy. Results agree well with a recent $O(α^2)$ QED prediction, varying $3.8-5.6$ experimental standard deviations from other measurements.

Measurement of Orthopositronium Decay Rate Using SiO2 Powder: Integration of Thermalization into Time Spectrum

The intrinsic decay rate of orthopositronium (o-Ps) formed in SiO_2 powder was measured using a modified method which determined the time dependence of the pick-off annihilation rate using high-energy-resolution germanium detectors. That is, the main systematic error due to thermalization was accounted for and integrated into the time spectrum fitting procedure. The averaged value was found to be lambda_(o-Ps)=7.0399+0.0020-0.0021(stat.) +-0.0015(sys.) mu s^{-1}, which agrees well with the O(alpha^2) QED prediction; varying 2.8-4.2 experimental standard deviations from other measurements.
