Quantum state identification of qutrits via a nonlinear protocol

We propose a probabilistic quantum protocol to realize a nonlinear transformation of qutrit states, which by iterative applications on ensembles can be used to distinguish two types of pure states. The protocol involves single-qutrit and two-qutrit unitary operations as well as post-selection according to the results obtained in intermediate measurements. We utilize the nonlinear transformation in an algorithm to identify a quantum state provided it belongs to an arbitrary known finite set. The algorithm is based on dividing the known set of states into two appropriately designed subsets which can be distinguished by the nonlinear protocol. In most cases this is accompanied by the application of some properly defined physical (unitary) operation on the unknown state. Then, by the application of the nonlinear protocol one can decide which of the two subsets the unknown state belongs to thus reducing the number of possible candidates. By iteratively continuing this procedure until a single possible candidate remains, one can identify the unknown state.

Magnetic noise spectrum measurement by an atom laser in gravity

Bose-Einstein condensates of ultracold atoms can be used to sense fluctuations of the magnetic field by means of transitions into untrapped hyperfine states. It has been shown recently that counting the outcoupled atoms can yield the power spectrum of the magnetic noise. We calculate the spectral resolution function which characterizes the condensate as a noise measurement device in this scheme. We use the description of the radio-frequency outcoupling scheme of an atom laser which takes into account the gravitational acceleration. Employing both an intuitive and the exact three-dimensional and fully quantum mechanical approach we derive the position-dependent spectral resolution function for condensates of different size and shape.

Quantum galvanometer by interfacing a vibrating nanowire and cold atoms

We evaluate the coupling of a Bose-Einstein condensate of ultracold, paramagnetic atoms to the magnetic field of the current in a mechanically vibrating carbon nanotube within the frame of a full quantum theory. We find that the interaction is strong enough to sense quantum features of the nanowire current noise spectrum by means of hyperfine-state-selective atom counting. Such a non-destructive measurement of the electric current via its magnetic field corresponds to the classical galvanometer scheme, extended to the quantum regime of charge transport. The calculated high sensitivity of the interaction in the nanowire-BEC hybrid systems opens up the possibility of quantum control, which may be further extended to include other relevant degrees of freedom.

Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in a mesoscopic ring with asymmetric arm-dependent injection

Electron transport through mesoscopic, one-dimensional rings with asymmetric injection into the arms of the ring is studied, in the presence of a Aharonov-Bohm flux, by means of an appropriate $\boldsymbol{S}$ matrix. This matrix is expressed in terms of two parameters one of which ($λ$) accounts phenomenologically for this asymmetric injection into the arms of the ring. In addition, the effect of a scatterer placed in one arm of the ring is considered. Explicit expressions are obtained for the transmission as a function of the incident electron energy, the magnetic field, the asymmetry parameter $λ$, and the strength of the scatterer. Results of the literature for symmetric rings are described by $λ=1$ and readily recovered. We relate our results to rings of finite width.

Parametric amplification of the mechanical vibrations of a suspended nanowire by magnetic coupling to a Bose-Einstein condensate

We consider the possibility of parametric amplification of a mechanical vibration mode of a nanowire due to its interaction with a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of ultracold atoms. The magneto-mechanical coupling is mediated by the vibrationally modulated magnetic field around the current-carrying nanowire, which can induce atomic transitions between different hyperfine sublevels. We theoretically analyze the limitations arising from the fact that the spin inverted atomic medium which feeds the mechanical oscillation has a finite bandwidth in the range of the chemical potential of the condensate.
