Pulsational line profile variation of the roAp star HR 3831

We report the first comprehensive investigation of the line profile variation caused by non-radial pulsation in a magnetic oscillating chemically peculiar star. Spectrum variation of the well-known roAp star HR 3831 is detected using very high-resolution high signal-to-noise spectroscopic time-series observations and are followed through the whole rotation cycle of the star. We confirm outstanding diversity of pulsational behaviour of different lines in the HR 3831 spectrum and attribute this phenomenon to an interplay between extreme vertical chemical inhomogeneity of the HR 3831 atmosphere and a running pulsation wave, propagating towards the upper photospheric layers with increasing amplitude. Rapid profile variation of the NdIII 6145 A line is characterized by measuring changes of its equivalent width and the first three moments. We demonstrate that rotational modulation of the radial velocity oscillations cannot be fully explained by an oblique axisymmetric dipole (ell=1, m=0) mode, implied by the classical oblique pulsator model of roAp stars. Pulsational variation of the higher moments reveal substantial contribution of the high-order (ell=3) spherical harmonics which appear due to distortion of pulsations in HR 3831 by the global magnetic field. We interpret observations with a novel numerical model of the pulsational variation and rotational modulation of the line profile moments in roAp stars. The comparison between observed and computed amplitudes and phases of the radial velocity and line width variation is used to establish parameters of the oblique pulsator model of HR 3831. Furthermore, definite detection of pulsational variation in lines of light and iron-peak elements enables the first 3-D mapping of pulsations in non-radially oscillating star.

Inhomogeneous distribution of mercury on the surfaces of rapidly rotating HgMn stars

Starspots are usually associated with the action of magnetic fields at the stellar surfaces. However, recently an inhomogeneous chemical distribution of mercury was found for the mercury-manganese (HgMn) star alpha And -- a well-established member of a non-magnetic subclass of the chemically peculiar stars of the upper main sequence. In this study we present first results of the high-resolution survey of the HgII 3984 resonance line in the spectra of rapidly rotating HgMn stars with atmospheric parameters similar to those of alpha And. We use spectrum synthesis modelling and take advantage of the Doppler resolution of the stellar surfaces to probe horizontal structure of mercury distribution. Clear signatures of spots are found in the HgII 3984 line profiles of HR 1185 and HR 8723. Two observations of the latter star separated by two days give evidence for the line profile variability. We conclude that inhomogeneous distribution of Hg is a common phenomenon for the rapidly rotating HgMn stars in the 13000--13800 K effective temperature range independently of the stellar evolutionary stage. These results establish existence of a new class of spectrum variable spotted B-type stars. It is suggested that the observed Hg inhomogeneities arise from dynamical instabilities in the chemical diffusion processes and are unrelated to magnetic phenomena.

Variation of the line profile moments for stars pulsating in distorted oblique non-radial modes

We derive expressions and develop a numerical technique for the analysis of the line profile moment variations for stars pulsating in oblique non-radial modes. This represents an extension of the widely used spectroscopic moment mode identification method to the oblique distorted pulsations observed in rapidly oscillating Ap stars. We demonstrate that a non-axisymmetric superposition of the pulsation and rotation velocity fields results in a qualitatively new behaviour of some of the line profile characteristics. It is found that for the majority of roAp stars the second moment varies with the pulsation frequency rather than with its first harmonic even for axisymmetric modes. We also identify pulsation observables which do not change during pulsation cycle but are modulated by the stellar rotation and can contribute to the variability of the stellar spectra averaged over many pulsation cycles. As an illustration of the new version of the moment technique, we compute rotational modulation of the pulsational changes of the line profile moments for the oblique axisymmetric dipolar pulsation modes with different parameters. It is also shown that a distortion of the oblique dipolar modes predicted by the recent theoretical studies of the stellar magneto-acoustic oscillations can be readily diagnosed through the moment analysis. In particular, the shape of the pulsation phase modulation for the radial velocity and the second moment is very sensitive to non-axisymmetric pulsation components, whereas the rotational modulation of the second moment amplitude is best suited to reveal axisymmetric magnetically induced distortion of pulsations.

Stellar model atmospheres with magnetic line blanketing

Model atmospheres of A and B stars are computed taking into account magnetic line blanketing. These calculations are based on the new stellar model atmosphere code LLModels which implements direct treatment of the opacities due to the bound-bound transitions and ensures an accurate and detailed description of the line absorption. The anomalous Zeeman effect was calculated for the field strengths between 1 and 40 kG and a field vector perpendicular to the line of sight. The model structure, high-resolution energy distribution, photometric colors, metallic line spectra and the hydrogen Balmer line profiles are computed for magnetic stars with different metallicities and are discussed with respect to those of non-magnetic reference models. The magnetically enhanced line blanketing changes the atmospheric structure and leads to a redistribution of energy in the stellar spectrum. The most noticeable feature in the optical region is the appearance of the 5200 A depression. However, this effect is prominent only in cool A stars and disappears for higher effective temperatures. The presence of a magnetic field produces opposite variation of the flux distribution in the optical and UV region. A deficiency of the UV flux is found for the whole range of considered effective temperatures, whereas the ``null wavelength'' where flux remains unchanged shifts towards the shorter wavelengths for higher temperatures.

Indirect imaging of nonradial pulsations in a rapidly oscillating Ap star

Many types of stars show periodic variations of radius and brightness, which are commonly referred to as `stellar pulsations'. Observed pulsational characteristics are determined by fundamental stellar parameters. Consequently, investigations of stellar pulsations provide a unique opportunity to verify and refine our understanding of the evolution and internal structure of stars. However, a key boundary condition for this analysis -- precise information about the geometry of pulsations in the outer stellar envelopes -- has been notoriously difficult to secure. Here we demonstrate that it is possible to solve this problem by constructing an `image' of the pulsation velocity field from time series observations of stellar spectra. This technique is applied to study the geometry of nonradial pulsations in a prototype magnetic oscillating (roAp) star HR 3831. Our velocity map directly demonstrates an alignment of pulsations with the axis of the global magnetic field and reveals a significant magnetically induced distortion of pulsations. This observation constitutes a long-sought solution of the problem of the pulsation geometry of roAp stars and enables very stringent tests of the recent theories of stellar magneto-acoustic oscillations.

The null result of a search for pulsational variations of the surface magnetic field in the roAp star gamma Equulei

We describe an analysis of the time-resolved measurements of the surface magnetic field in the roAp star gamma Equ. We have obtained a high-resolution and high S/N spectroscopic time-series, and the magnetic field was determined using Zeeman resolved profiles of the Fe II 6149.25 A and Fe I 6173.34 A lines. Contrary to recent reports we do not find any evidence of magnetic variability with pulsation phase, and derive an upper limit of 5-10 G for pulsational modulation of the surface magnetic field in gamma Equ.

No magnetic field variation with pulsation phase in the roAp star gamma Equulei

We present an analysis of 210 high-resolution time-resolved spectropolarimetric observations of the roAp star gamma Equ obtained over three nights in August and September 2003. Radial velocity variations due to p-mode non-radial pulsations are clearly detected in the lines of rare-earth elements, in particular Pr III, Nd II and Nd III. In contrast, we find absolutely no evidence for the variation of the mean longitudinal magnetic field over the pulsation period in gamma Equ at the level of 110-240 G which was recently reported by Leone & Kurtz (2003). Our investigation of the variability of circularly polarized profiles of 13 Nd III lines demonstrates that, at the 3 sigma confidence level, no magnetic field variation with an amplitude above 40-60 G was present in gamma Equ during our monitoring of this star.
