Constraining massless dilaton theory at Solar system scales with the planetary ephemeris INPOP

We expose the phenomenology of the massless dilaton theory in the Solar system for a non universal quadratic coupling between the scalar field which represents the dilaton, and the matter. Modified post-Newtonian equations of motion of an $N$-body system and the light time travel are derived from the action of the theory. We use the physical properties of the main planets of the Solar system to reduce the number of parameters to be tested to 3 in the linear coupling case. In the linear case, we have an universal coupling constant $α_0$ and two coupling constants $α_T$ and $α_G$ related respectively to the telluric bodies and to the gaseous bodies. We then use the planetary ephemeris, INPOP19a, in order to constrain these constants. We succeeded to constrain the linear coupling scenario and the constraints read $α_0=(1.01\pm23.7)\times 10^{-5}$, $α_T=(0.00\pm24.5)\times 10^{-6}$, $α_G=(-1.46\pm12.0)\times 10^{-5}$, at the 99.5 \% C.L.

INPOP Planetary ephemerides and applications in the frame of the BepiColombo mission including new constraints on the graviton mass and dilaton parameters

We present here the new results obtained with the INPOP planetary ephemerides and BepiColombo radio-science simulations. We give new constraints for the classic General Relativity tests in terms of violation of the PPN parameters $β$ and $γ$ and the time variation of the gravitational constant G. We also present new limits for the mass of the graviton and finally we obtain new acceptable intervals for the dilaton parameters $α_{0}$, $α_{T}$ and $α_{G}$. Besides these tests of gravitation, we also study the possibility of detecting the Sun core rotation.

Constraint on the Yukawa suppression of the Newtonian potential from the planetary ephemeris INPOP19a

We use the latest solution of the ephemeris INPOP (19a) in order to improve our previous constraint on the existence of a Yukawa suppression to the Newtonian potential, generically associated to a graviton's mass. Unlike the ephemeris INPOP17a, several residuals are found to degrade significantly at roughly the same amplitudes of the Compton wavelength $λ_g$. As a consequence, we introduce a novel statistical criterion in order to derive the constraint with INPOP19a. After checking that it leads to a constraint consistent with our previous result when applied on INPOP17b, we apply the method to the new solution INPOP19a. We show that the residuals of Mars orbiters, Cassini, Messenger, and Juno, degrade significantly when $λ_g \leq$ $3.43 \times 10^{13}$ km with a 99,7% confidence level -- corresponding to a graviton mass bigger than $3.62 \times 10^{-23}$ eV$/c^2$. This is a stronger constraint on the Compton wavelength than the one obtained from the first gravitational-wave transient catalog by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration in the radiative regime, since our 90% C.L. limit reads $λ_g >3.93 \times 10^{13}$ km ($m_g <3.16 \times 10^{-23}$ eV$/c^2$).

Constraining the mass of the graviton with the planetary ephemeris INPOP

We use the planetary ephemeris INPOP17b to constrain the mass of the graviton in the Newtonian limit. We also give an interpretation of this result for a specific case of fifth force framework. We find that the residuals for the Cassini spacecraft significantly (90\% C.L.) degrade for Compton wavelengths of the graviton smaller than $1.83\times 10^{13}$ km, corresponding to a graviton mass bigger than $6.76\times 10^{-23} eV/c^2$. This limit is comparable in magnitude to the one obtained by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration in the radiative regime. We also use this specific example to illustrate why constraints on alternative theories of gravity obtained from postfit residuals are generically overestimated.

Violation of the equivalence principle from light scalar fields: from Dark Matter candidates to scalarized black holes

Tensor-scalar theory is a wide class of alternative theory of gravitation that can be motivated by higher dimensional theories, by models of dark matter or dark ernergy. In the general case, the scalar field will couple non-universally to matter producing a violation of the equivalence principle. In this communication, we review a microscopic model of scalar/matter coupling and its observable consequences in terms of universality of free fall, of frequencies comparison and of redshifts tests. We then focus on two models: (i) a model of ultralight scalar dark matter and (ii) a model of scalarized black hole in our Galactic Center. For both these models, we present constraints using recent measurements: atomic clocks comparisons, universality of free fall measurements, measurement of the relativistic redshift with the short period star S0-2 orbiting the supermassive black hole in our Galactic Center.

Violation of the equivalence principle from light scalar dark matter

In this paper, we study the local observational consequences of a violation of the Einstein Equivalence Principle induced by models of light scalar Dark Matter (DM). We focus on two different models where the scalar field couples linearly or quadratically to the standard model of matter fields. For both these cases, we derive the solutions of the scalar field. We also derive from first principles the expressions for two types of observables: (i) the local comparison of two atomic sensors that are differently sensitive to the constants of Nature and (ii) the local differential acceleration between two test-masses with different compositions. For the linear coupling, we recover that the signatures induced by DM on both observables are the sum of harmonic and Yukawa terms. For the quadratic coupling on the other hand, the signatures derived for both types of observables turn out to be a sum of a time independent term and of an harmonic oscillation, whose amplitudes both depend on the position. Such a behavior is new and can make experiments in space more sensitive than terrestrial ones. Besides, the observables present some interesting non-linear behaviors that are due to the amplification or to the screening of the scalar-field, depending on the parameters of the theory, and on the compactness of the source of the gravitational field. Finally, we infer the various limits on the DM coupling parameters by using existing frequency comparisons on the one hand and tests of the universality of free fall on the ground (torsion balances) or in space (MICROSCOPE mission) on the other hand. We show that in the quadratic case, so-called natural parameters are still allowed by observations.

The new lunar ephemeris INPOP17a and its application to fundamental physics

We present here the new INPOP lunar ephemeris, INPOP17a. This ephemeris is obtained through the numerical integration of the equations of motion and of rotation of the Moon, fitted over 48 years of Lunar Laser Ranging (LLR) data. We also include the 2 years of infrared (IR) LLR data acquired at the Grasse station between 2015 and 2017. Tests of the universality of free fall are performed. We find no violation of the principle of equivalence at the 10-14 level. A new interpretation in the frame of dilaton theories is also proposed.

Post-Newtonian phenomenology of a massless dilaton

In this paper, we present extensively the observational consequences of massless dilaton theories at the post-Newtonian level. We extend previous work by considering a general model including a dilaton-Ricci coupling as well as a general dilaton kinetic term while using the microphysical dilaton-matter coupling model proposed in [Damour and Donoghue, PRD 2010]. We derive all the expressions needed to analyze local gravitational observations in a dilaton framework, which is useful to derive constraints on the dilaton theories. In particular, we present the equations of motion of celestial bodies (in barycentric and planetocentric reference frames), the equation of propagation of light and the evolution of proper time as measured by specific clocks. Particular care is taken in order to derive properly the observables. The resulting equations can be used to analyse a large numbers of observations: universality of free fall tests, planetary ephemerides analysis, analysis of satellites motion, Very Long Baseline Interferometry, tracking of spacecraft, gravitational redshift tests, ...

Some cosmological consequences of a breaking of the Einstein equivalence principle

In this communication, we consider a wide class of extensions to General Relativity that break explicitly the Einstein Equivalence Principle by introducing a multiplicative coupling between a scalar field and the electromagnetic Lagrangian. In these theories, we show that 4 cosmological observables are intimately related to each other: a temporal variation of the fine structure constant, a violation of the distance-duality relation, the evolution of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and CMB spectral distortions. This enables one to put very stringent constraints on possible violations of the distance-duality relation, on the evolution of the CMB temperature and on admissible CMB spectral distortions using current constraints on the fine structure constant. Alternatively, this offers interesting possibilities to test a wide range of theories of gravity by analyzing several data sets concurrently.

Observables in theories with a varying fine structure constant

We show how two seemingly different theories with a scalar multiplicative coupling to electrodynamics are actually two equivalent parametrisations of the same theory: despite some differences in the interpretation of some phenemenological aspects of the parametrisations, they lead to the same physical observables. This is illustrated on the interpretation of observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background.

Breaking of the equivalence principle in the electromagnetic sector and its cosmological signatures

This paper proposes a systematic study of cosmological signatures of modifications of gravity via the presence of a scalar field with a multiplicative coupling to the electromagnetic Lagrangian. We show that, in this framework, variations of the fine structure constant, violations of the distance duality relation, evolution of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and CMB distortions are intimately and unequivocally linked. This enables one to put very stringent constraints on possible violations of the distance duality relation, on the evolution of the CMB temperature and on admissible CMB distortions using current constraints on the fine structure constant. Alternatively, this offers interesting possibilities to test a wide range of theories of gravity by analysing several datasets concurrently. We discuss results obtained using current data as well as some forecasts for future data sets such as those coming from EUCLID or the SKA.
