CP Violation in the General Two-Higgs-Doublet Model: a Geometric View

We discuss the CP properties of the potential in the general Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (THDM). This is done in a concise way using real gauge invariant functions built from the scalar products of the doublet fields. The space of these invariant functions, parametrising the gauge orbits of the Higgs fields, is isomorphic to the forward light cone and its interior. CP transformations are shown to correspond to reflections in the space of the gauge invariant functions. We consider CP transformations where no mixing of the Higgs doublets is taken into account as well as the general case where the Higgs basis is not fixed. We present basis independent conditions for explicit CP violation which may be checked easily for any THDM potential. Conditions for spontaneous CP violation, that is CP violation through the vacuum expectation values of the Higgs fields, are also derived in a basis independent way.

Photoproduction at collider energies: from RHIC and HERA to the LHC

We present the mini-proceedings of the workshop on ``Photoproduction at collider energies: from RHIC and HERA to the LHC'' held at the European Centre for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas (ECT*, Trento) from January 15 to 19, 2007. The workshop gathered both theorists and experimentalists to discuss the current status of investigations of high-energy photon-induced processes at different colliders (HERA, RHIC, and Tevatron) as well as preparations for extension of these studies at the LHC. The main physics topics covered were: (i) small-$x$ QCD in photoproduction studies with protons and in electromagnetic (aka. ultraperipheral) nucleus-nucleus collisions, (ii) hard diffraction physics at hadron colliders, and (iii) photon-photon collisions at very high energies: electroweak and beyond the Standard Model processes. These mini-proceedings consist of an introduction and short summaries of the talks presented at the meeting.

Determining the global minimum of Higgs potentials via Groebner bases - applied to the NMSSM

Determining the global minimum of Higgs potentials with several Higgs fields like the next-to-minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (NMSSM) is a non-trivial task already at the tree level. The global minimum of a Higgs potential can be found from the set of all its stationary points defined by a multivariate polynomial system of equations. We introduce here the algebraic Groebner basis approach to solve this system of equations. We apply the method to the NMSSM with CP conserving as well as CP violating parameters. The results reveal an interesting stationary-point structure of the potential. Requiring the global minimum to give the electroweak symmetry breaking observed in Nature excludes large parts of the parameter space.

Effective-Lagrangian approach to gamma gamma --> WW; I: Couplings and amplitudes

We consider the gauge-boson sector of a locally SU(2) x U(1) invariant effective Lagrangian with ten dimension-six operators added to the Lagrangian of the Standard Model. These operators induce anomalous three- and four-gauge-boson couplings and an anomalous gamma gamma H coupling. In the framework of this effective Lagrangian we calculate the helicity amplitudes and differential and total cross sections for the process gamma gamma --> WW at a photon collider. We give relations between different parts of the amplitudes that show which linear combinations of anomalous couplings are measurable in this reaction. The transformation properties of the differential cross section under CP are discussed. We find that three linear combinations of CP conserving and of CP violating couplings can be measured independently of the photon polarisation in gamma gamma --> WW.

Effective-Lagrangian approach to gamma gamma --> WW; II: Results and comparison with e+e- --> WW

We present a study of anomalous electroweak gauge-boson couplings which can be measured in e+e- and gamma gamma collisions at a future linear collider like ILC. We calculate the reachable sensitivity for the measurement of the anomalous couplings in gamma gamma --> WW. We compare these results with the reachable precision in the reaction e+e- --> WW on the one hand and with the bounds that one can get from high-precision observables in Z decays on the other hand. We show that one needs both the e+e- and the gamma gamma modes at an ILC to constrain the largest possible number of anomalous couplings and that the Giga-Z mode offers the best sensitivity for certain anomalous couplings.

The role of polarized positrons and electrons in revealing fundamental interactions at the Linear Collider

The proposed International Linear Collider (ILC) is well-suited for discovering physics beyond the Standard Model and for precisely unraveling the structure of the underlying physics. The physics return can be maximized by the use of polarized beams. This report shows the paramount role of polarized beams and summarizes the benefits obtained from polarizing the positron beam, as well as the electron beam. The physics case for this option is illustrated explicitly by analyzing reference reactions in different physics scenarios. The results show that positron polarization, combined with the clean experimental environment provided by the linear collider, allows to improve strongly the potential of searches for new particles and the identification of their dynamics, which opens the road to resolve shortcomings of the Standard Model. The report also presents an overview of possible designs for polarizing both beams at the ILC, as well as for measuring their polarization.

Anomalous gauge-boson couplings and the Higgs-boson mass

We study anomalous gauge-boson couplings induced by a locally SU(2) x U(1) invariant effective Lagrangian containing ten operators of dimension six built from the boson fields of the Standard Model (SM) before spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB). After SSB some operators lead to new three- and four-gauge-boson interactions, some contribute to the diagonal and off-diagonal kinetic terms of the gauge bosons and to the mass terms of the W and Z bosons. This requires a renormalisation of the gauge-boson fields, which, in turn, modifies the charged- and neutral-current interactions, although none of the additional operators contain fermion fields. Bounds on the anomalous couplings from electroweak precision measurements at LEP and SLD are correlated with the Higgs-boson mass m_H. Rather moderate values of anomalous couplings allow m_H up to 500 GeV. At a future linear collider the triple-gauge-boson couplings gammaWW and ZWW can be measured in the reaction e+e- --> WW. We compare three approaches to anomalous gauge-boson couplings: the form-factor approach, the addition of anomalous coupling terms to the SM Lagrangian after and, as outlined above, before SSB. The translation of the bounds on the couplings from one approach to another is not straightforward. We show that it can be done for the process e+e- --> WW by defining new effective ZWW couplings.

Factorisation, Parton Entanglement and the Drell-Yan Process

We discuss the angular distribution of the lepton pair in the Drell-Yan process, hadron+hadron -> γ^* X -> l^+ l^- X. This process gives information on the spin-density matrix ρ^{(q,\bar{q})} of the annihilating quark-antiquark pair in q+\bar{q} -> l^+ l^-. There is strong experimental evidence that even for unpolarised initial hadrons ρ^{(q,\bar{q})} is nontrivial, and therefore the quark-antiquark system is polarised. We discuss the possibilities of a general ρ^{(q,\bar{q})} -which could be entangled- and a factorising ρ^{(q,\bar{q})}. We argue that instantons may lead to a nontrivial ρ^{(q,\bar{q})} of the type indicated by experiments.

Physics at the CLIC Multi-TeV Linear Collider

This report summarizes a study of the physics potential of the CLIC e+e- linear collider operating at centre-of-mass energies from 1 TeV to 5 TeV with luminosity of the order of 10^35 cm^-2 s^-1. First, the CLIC collider complex is surveyed, with emphasis on aspects related to its physics capabilities, particularly the luminosity and energy, and also possible polarization, γγand e-e- collisions. The next CLIC Test facility, CTF3, and its R&D programme are also reviewed. We then discuss aspects of experimentation at CLIC, including backgrounds and experimental conditions, and present a conceptual detector design used in the physics analyses, most of which use the nominal CLIC centre-of-mass energy of 3 TeV. CLIC contributions to Higgs physics could include completing the profile of a light Higgs boson by measuring rare decays and reconstructing the Higgs potential, or discovering one or more heavy Higgs bosons, or probing CP violation in the Higgs sector. Turning to physics beyond the Standard Model, CLIC might be able to complete the supersymmetric spectrum and make more precise measurements of sparticles detected previously at the LHC or a lower-energy linear e+e- collider: γγcollisions and polarization would be particularly useful for these tasks. CLIC would also have unique capabilities for probing other possible extensions of the Standard Model, such as theories with extra dimensions or new vector resonances, new contact interactions and models with strong WW scattering at high energies. In all the scenarios we have studied, CLIC would provide significant fundamental physics information beyond that available from the LHC and a lower-energy linear e+e- collider, as a result of its unique combination of high energy and experimental precision.

Masses and couplings of vector mesons from the pion electromagnetic, weak, and πγtransition form factors

We analyse the pion electromagnetic, charged-current, and $πγ$ transition form factors at timelike momentum transfers $q$, $q^2=s\le 1.4$ GeV$^2$, using a dispersion approach. We discuss in detail the propagator matrix of the photon-vector-meson system and define certain reduced amplitudes, or vertex functions, describing the coupling of this system to final states. We then apply the derived analytic expressions to the analysis of the recent $e^+e^-\to π^+π^-$, $τ^-\to π^-π^0ν_τ$, and $e^+e^-\to π^0γ$ data. We find the reduced amplitudes for the coupling of the photon and vector mesons to two pseudoscalars to be constant, independent of $s$, in the range considered, indicating a "freezing" of the amplitudes for $s\le 1$ GeV. The fit to the form factor data leads to the following values of the Breit-Wigner resonance masses m_{ρ^-}=775.3\pm 0.8 MeV, m_{ρ^0}=773.7\pm 0.6 MeV and m_ω=782.43\pm 0.05 MeV, where the errors are only statistical.

CP Violation in the 3 Jet and 4 Jet Decays of the Z Boson at GigaZ

We review CP-violating effects in Z --> 3 jet and Z --> 4 jet decays, assuming the presence of CP-violating effective Z b bbar G and Z b bbar G G couplings. Longitudinal beam polarization is included in the studies. We propose a direct search for such CP-violating couplings by using various CP-odd observables. The data of a future linear collider running at the Z-resonance in the so-called GigaZ option should give significant information on the couplings. Finally we show that stringent bounds on the mass of excited b quarks can be derived if appropriate couplings are of a size characteristic of a strong interaction.

The pion form factor at timelike momentum transfers in a dispersion approach

We consider a model with $ρππ$, $ρKK$, and gauge-invariant $ργ$ couplings and obtain the pion form factor $F_π$ at timelike momentum transfers by resummation of pion and kaon loops. We use a dispersion representation for the loop diagrams and analyse ambiguities related to subtraction constants. The resulting representation for $F_π$ is shown to have the form of the conventional vector meson dominance formula with one important distinction - the effective $ρ$-meson decay constant $f^{\rm eff}_ρ$ turns out to depend on the momentum transfer. For the electromagnetic pion form factor we include in addition the $ρ-ω$ mixing effects. We apply the representations obtained to the analysis of the data on the pion form factors from $e^+e^-$ annihilation and $τ$ decay and extract the $ρ^-$, $ρ^0$ and $ω$ masses and coupling constants.

Effective field theory approach to structure functions at small x

We relate the structure functions of deep inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering to current-current correlation functions in a Euclidean field theory depending on a parameter r. The r-dependent Hamiltonian of the theory is P0-(1-r)P3, with P0 the usual Hamiltonian and P3 the third component of the momentum operator. We show that small x in the structure functions correspond to the small r limit of the effective theory. We argue that for r->0 there is a critical regime of the theory where simple scaling relations should hold. We show that in this framework Regge behaviour of the structure functions obtained with the hard pomeron ansatz corresponds to a scaling behaviour of the matrix elements in the effective theory where the intercept of the hard pomeron appears as a critical index. Explicit expressions for various analytic continuations of structure functions and matrix elements are given as well as path integral representations for the matrix elements in the effective theory. Our aim is to provide a framework for truely nonperturbative calculations of structure functions at small x for arbitrary Q^2

Inelastic diffractive scattering in nonperturbative QCD

We examine diffractive proton-proton scattering p p -> p X and photo- and electroproduction of ρ^0 mesons γ^(*) p -> ρ^0 X, where X denotes a proton or a final state, into which the proton can go by diffractive dissociation. Using a functional integral approach we derive the scattering amplitudes, which are governed by the expectation values of light-like Wegner-Wilson loops, which are then evaluated using the model of the stochastic vacuum. For the proton, we assume a quark-diquark structure. From the scattering amplitudes we calculate total and differential cross sections for high centre of mass energy and small momentum transfer and compare with experiments. Furthermore we calculate isovector form factors for the proton and the pion within the same model.

Inclusive Quark Production in $e^{+}e^{-}$-Annihilation - A Path Integral Approach

The single-particle inclusive differential cross-section for a reaction $a+b\to c+X$ is written as imaginary part of a correlation function in a forward scattering amplitude for $a+b\to a+b$ in a modified effective theory. In this modified theory the interaction Hamiltonian $\tilde H_I$ equals $H_I$ of the original theory up to a certain time. Then there is a sign change and $\tilde H_I$ becomes nonlocal. This is worked out in detail for scalar field models and for QED plus the abelian gluon model. A suitable path integral for direct calculations of inclusive cross sections is presented.

Observing the Odderon: Tensor Meson Photoproduction

We calculate high-energy photoproduction of the tensor meson $f_2(1270)$ by odderon and photon exchange in the reaction $γ+ {\rm{p}} \to f_2(1270) + {\rm{X}}$, where X is either the nucleon or the sum of the N(1520) and N(1535) baryon resonances. Odderon exchange dominates except at very small transverse momentum, and we find a cross section of about 20 nb at a centre-of-mass energy of 20 GeV. This result is compared with what is currently known experimentally about $f_2$ photoproduction. We conclude that odderon exchange is not ruled out by present data. On the contrary, an odderon-induced cross section of the above magnitude may help to explain a puzzling result observed by the E687 experiment.
