Ground-plane screening of Coulomb interactions in two-dimensional systems: How effectively can one two-dimensional system screen interactions in another?

The use of a nearby metallic ground-plane to limit the range of the Coulomb interactions between carriers is a useful approach in studying the physics of two-dimensional (2D) systems. This approach has been used to study Wigner crystallization of electrons on the surface of liquid helium, and most recently, the insulating and metallic states of semiconductor-based two-dimensional systems. In this paper, we perform calculations of the screening effect of one 2D system on another and show that a 2D system is at least as effective as a metal in screening Coulomb interactions. We also show that the recent observation of the reduced effect of the ground-plane when the 2D system is in the metallic regime is due to intralayer screening.

Physics of $π$-Meson Condensation and High Temperature Cuprate Superconductors

The idea of condensation of the Goldstone $π$-meson field in nuclear matter had been put forward a long time ago. However, it was established that the normal nuclear density is too low, it is not sufficient to condensate $π$-mesons. This is why the $π$-condensation has never been observed. Recent experimental and theoretical studies of high temperature cuprate superconductors have revealed condensation of Goldstone magnons, the effect fully analogous to the $π$-condensation. The magnon condensation has been observed. It is clear now that quantum fluctuations play a crucial role in the condensation, in particular they drive a quantum phase transition that destroys the condensate at some density of fermions.

Why phase diagrams of different underdoped cuprates are remarkably different? Disorder versus bilayer

Contrary to a widely accepted view the phase diagrams of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$\rm_{6+y}$, in spite of similarities are remarkably different. Both the electric conduction properties and the commensurate/incommensurate spin ordering properties differ dramatically. It is argued that the role of disorder in YBCO is insignificant while the bilayer structure is crucial. On the other hand in LSCO the intrinsic disorder to a large extent drives the properties of the system. The developed approach explains the low-temperature magnetic properties of the systems. The most important point is the difference with respect to the incommensurate spin ordering, including the difference in the incommensurate pitches. The present analysis demonstrates that the superconductivity is intimately related to the incommensurate spin ordering.

Localization-delocalization transition of a polaron near an impurity

We solve the problem of polaron localization on an attractive impurity by means of direct-space Diagrammatic Monte Carlo implemented for the system in the thermodynamic limit. In particular we determine the ground state phase diagram in dependence on the electron-phonon coupling and impurity potential strength for the whole phonon frequency range. Including the quantum phonon dynamics we find and characterize a new phase which is missing in the zero phonon-frequency limit (adiabatic approximation), where self-trapped polarons are not localized at shallow impurities. We predict and show that in the vicinity of the localization transition a region with a mixture of weak- and strong-coupling spectral response is realized.

Spin-stiffness of anisotropic Heisenberg model on square lattice and possible mechanism for pinning of the electronic liquid crystal direction in YBCO

Using series expansions and spin-wave theory we calculate the spin-stiffness anisotropy $ρ_{sx}/ρ_{sy}$ in Heisenberg models on the square lattice with anisotropic couplings $J_x,J_y$. We find that for the weakly anisotropic spin-half model ($J_x\approx J_y$), $ρ_{sx}/ρ_{sy}$ deviates substantially from the naive estimate $ρ_{sx}/ρ_{sy} \approx J_x/J_y$. We argue that this deviation can be responsible for pinning the electronic liquid crystal direction, a novel effect recently discovered in YBCO. For completeness, we also study the spin-stiffness for arbitrary anisotropy $J_x/J_y$ for spin-half and spin-one models. In the limit of $J_y/J_x\to 0$, when the model reduces to weakly coupled chains, the two show dramatically different behavior. In the spin-one model, the stiffness along the chains goes to zero, implying the onset of Haldane-gap phase, whereas for spin-half the stiffness along the chains increases monotonically from a value of $0.18 J_x$ for $J_y/J_x=1$ towards $0.25 J_x$ for $J_y/J_x\to 0$. Spin-wave theory is extremely accurate for spin-one but breaks down for spin-half presumably due to the onset of topological terms.

Diagonal charge modulation in the insulating La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$

We show that, due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and the XY anisotropies, the disordered diagonal spin spiral in the insulating La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ generates a diagonal charge density wave (CDW) with the wave vector twice of that of the spin spiral. The amplitude of the CDW depends on values of the anisotropies, the doping level, and on the density of states at the chemical potential. Based on available experimental data we estimate that for 4% doping the amplitude of CDW is about 1/10 of the doping level. We believe that this mechanism explains the CDW observed recently in Zn-codoped detwinned La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$.

Anisotropies in insulating La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$: angular resolved photoemission and optical absorption

Due to the orthorhombic distortion of the lattice, the electronic hopping integrals along the $a$ and $b$ diagonals, the orthorhombic directions, are slightly different. We calculate their difference in the LDA and find $t_{a}^{\prime}-t_{b}^{\prime}\approx 8 $meV. We argue that electron correlations in the insulating phase of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$, i. e. at doping $x\leq 0.055,$ dramatically enhance the $(t_{a}^{\prime}-t_{b}^{\prime}) $-splitting between the $a$- and $b$-hole valleys. In particular, we predict that the intensity of both angle-resolved photoemission and of optical absorption is very different for the $a$ and $b$ nodal points.

Correlated electron current and temperature dependence of the conductance of a quantum point contact

We investigate finite temperature corrections to the Landauer formula due to electron-electron interaction within the quantum point contact. When the Fermi level is close to the barrier height, the interaction is strongly enhanced due to semiclassical slowing of the electrons. To describe electron transport we formulate and solve a nonlocal kinetic equation for the density matrix of electrons. The correction to the conductance $G$ is negative and strongly enhanced in the region 0.5*2e^2/h < G < 1*2e^2/h . Our results for conductance agree with the so-called ``0.7 structure'' observed in experiments..

Quantum chaos and fluctuations in isolated nuclear spin systems

Using numerical simulations we investigate dynamical quantum chaos in isolated nuclear spin systems. We determine the structure of quantum states, investigate the validity of the Curie law for magnetic susceptibility and find the spectrum of magnetic noise. The spectrum is the same for positive and negative temperatures. The study is motivated by recent interest in condensed-matter experiments for searches of fundamental parity- and time-reversal-invariance violations. In these experiments nuclear spins are cooled down to microkelvin temperatures and are completely decoupled from their surroundings. A limitation on statistical sensitivity of the experiments arises from the magnetic noise.

The J1-J2 model: First order phase transition versus deconfinement of spinons

We revisit the phase transition from the Néel ordered to a valence bond solid (VBS) state in the two-dimensional $J_1-J_2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model. In the first part we address the question whether or not this transition could be an example of a second order phase transition due to a deconfinement of spinons. We give arguments based on series expansion and spin-wave theory that this is not the case and the transition is most likely first order. The method proposed here to detect first order phase transitions seems to be very sensitive and might be useful in other models as well. In the second part we analyze possible VBS patterns in the magnetically disordered phase based on numerical data for different susceptibilities, obtained in the ordered phase, which test the breaking of lattice symmetries. We conclude that a columnar dimerization pattern is the most likely candidate.

A possibility for precise Weinberg angle measurement in centrosymmetric crystals with axis

We demonstrate that parity nonconserving interaction due to the nuclear weak charge Q_W leads to nonlinear magnetoelectric effect in centrosymmetric paramagnetic crystals. It is shown that the effect exists only in crystals with special symmetry axis k. Kinematically, the correlation (correction to energy) has the form H_PNC ~ Q_W (E,[B,k])(B,k), where B and E are the external magnetic and electric fields. This gives rise to magnetic induction M_PNC ~ Q_W {k(B,[k,E]) + [k,E](B,k)}. To be specific we consider rare-earth trifluorides and, in particular, dysprosium trifluoride which looks the most suitable for experiment. We estimate the optimal temperature for the experiment to be of a few kelvin. For the magnetic field B = 1 T and the electric field E = 10 kV/cm, the expected magnetic induction is 4 πM_PNC = 0.5 * 10^-11 G, six orders of magnitude larger than the best sensitivity currently under discussion. Dysprosium has several stable isotopes, and so, comparison of the effects for different isotopes provides possibility for precise measurement of the Weinberg angle.

On the sensitivity of condensed-matter P- and T-violation experiments

Experiments searching for parity- and time-reversal-invariance-violating effects that rely on measuring magnetization of a condensed-matter sample induced by application of an electric field are considered. A limit on statistical sensitivity arises due to random fluctuations of the spins in the sample. The scaling of this limit with the number of spins and their relaxation time is derived. Application to an experiment searching for nuclear Schiff moment in a ferroelectric is discussed.

The Magnetism of Li doped La$_{2}$CuO$_4$: the antiferromagnetic spin-shard state

We study the dynamics of a single hole in Li and Sr doped La$_{2}$CuO$_4$ and its extension to a finite hole concentration. We compare the physics of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and La$_{2}$Cu$_{1-x}$Li$_x$O$_4$ and explain why these systems are remarkably different. We demonstrate that holes in La$_{2}$Cu$_{1-x}$Li$_x$O$_4$ are always localized and that there is a critical concentration, $x_c\approx 0.03$, above which the holes break the global antiferromagnetic state into an array of weakly coupled antiferromagnetic clusters (antiferromagnetic shards). We show that the spin-shard state provides a description of the magnetic and electric properties of La$_{2}$Cu$_{1-x}$Li$_x$O$_4$. Two experiments that can test our theory are proposed.

A suggested search for 207Pb nuclear Schiff moment in PbTiO3 ferroelectric

We suggest two types of experiments, NMR and macroscopic magnetometry, with solid PbTiO3 to search for the nuclear Schiff moment of 207Pb. Both kinds of experiments promise substantial improvement over the presently achieved sensitivities. Statistical considerations show that the improvement of the current sensitivity can be up to 10 orders of magnitude for the magnetometry experiment and up to 6 orders of magnitude for the NMR experiment. Such significant enhancement is due to the strong internal electric field of the ferroelectric, as well as due to the possibility to cool the nuclear-spin subsystem in the compound down to nanokelvin temperatures.

Magnon and Hole Excitations in the Two-Dimensional Half-filled Hubbard Model

Spin and hole excitation spectra and spectral weights are calculated for the half-filled Hubbard model, as a function of $t/U$. We find that the high energy spin spectra are sensitive to charge fluctuations. The energy difference $Δ(π,0)- Δ(π/2,π/2)$, which is negative for the Heisenberg model, changes sign at a fairly small $t/U\approx 0.053(5)$. The hole bandwidth is proportional to $J$, and considerably larger than in the t-J models. It has a minimum at ($π/2,π/2$) and a very weak dispersion along the antiferromagnetic zone boundary. A good fit to the measured spin spectra in La$_2$CuO$_4$ at $T=10K$ is obtained with the parameter values $U=3.1{\rm eV}$, $t=0.35{\rm eV}$.

The field-induced magnetic ordering transition in TlCuCl$_3$

In the first part we investigate in detail if the Bose-Einstein condensation scenario for magnons can quantitatively explain the observed field-induced magnetic ordering in TlCuCl$_3$. We use a bond-operator approach to map the spin system onto hard-core bosons and exactly account for the hard-core constraint in the dilute limit. We solve the hard-core model within the Hartree-Fock-Popov approximation and discuss its validity and the consequences of this approximation for the critical properties. In the second part the effects of spin-phonon and spin-orbit coupling are discussed within this framework. We show that the experimental magnetization and specific heat data are well described if a certain type of anisotropy is included. We also present predictions for the quasiparticle gap which might be tested in the future.

Vacuum polarization radiative correction to the parity violating electron scattering on heavy nuclei

The effect of vacuum polarization on the parity violating asymmetry in the elastic electron-nucleus scattering is considered. Calculations are performed in the high-energy approximation with an exact account for the electric field of the nucleus. It is shown that the radiative correction to the parity violating asymmetry is logarithmically enhanced and the value of the correction is about -1%.

Consequences of spin-orbit coupling for the Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons

In the first part we discuss how the BEC picture for magnons is modified by anisotropies induced by spin-orbit coupling. In particular we focus on the effects of antisymmetric spin interactions and/or a staggered component of the $g$ (gyromagnetic) tensor. Such terms lead to a gapped quasiparticle spectrum and a nonzero condensate density for all temperatures so that no phase transition occurs. We contrast this to the effect of crystal field anisotropies which are also induced by spin-orbit coupling. In the second part we study the field-induced magnetic ordering in TlCuCl$_3$ on a quantitative level. We show that the usual BEC picture does not allow for a good description of the experimental magnetisation data and argue that antisymmetric spin interactions and/or a staggered $g$ tensor component are still crucial, although both are expected to be tiny in this compound due to crystal symmetries. Including this type of interaction we obtain excellent agreement with experimental data.
