Cluster Dynamical Mean Field Theories

Cluster Dynamical Mean Field Theories are analyzed in terms of their semiclassical limit and their causality properties, and a translation invariant formulation of the cellular dynamical mean field theory, PCDMFT, is presented. The semiclassical limit of the cluster methods is analyzed by applying them to the Falikov-Kimball model in the limit of infinite Hubbard interaction U where they map to different classical cluster schemes for the Ising model. Furthermore the Cutkosky-t'Hooft-Veltman cutting equations are generalized and derived for non translation invariant systems using the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism. This provides a general setting to discuss causality properties of cluster methods. To illustrate the method, we prove that PCDMFT is causal while the nested cluster schemes (NCS) in general and the pair scheme in particular are not. Constraints on further extension of these schemes are discussed.

Mott transition at large orbital degeneracy: dynamical mean-field theory

We study analytically the Mott transition of the N-orbital Hubbard model using dynamical mean-field theory and a low-energy projection onto an effective Kondo model. It is demonstrated that the critical interaction at which the insulator appears (Uc1) and the one at which the metal becomes unstable (Uc2) have different dependence on the number of orbitals as the latter becomes large: Uc1 ~ \sqrt{N} while Uc2 ~ N. An exact analytical determination of the critical coupling Uc2/N is obtained in the large-N limit. The metallic solution close to this critical coupling has many similarities at low-energy with the results of slave boson approximations, to which a comparison is made. We also discuss how the critical temperature associated with the Mott critical endpoint depends on the number of orbitals.

On the perturbative expansion of the magnetization in the out-of-equilibrium Kondo model

This paper is concerned with the out-of-equilibrium two-lead Kondo model, considered as a model of a quantum dot in the Kondo regime. We revisit the perturbative expansion of the dot's magnetization, and conclude that, even at order 0 in the Kondo interactions, the magnetization is not given by the usual equilibrium result. We use the Schwinger-Keldysh method to derive a Dyson equation describing the steady state induced by the voltage between the two leads, and thus present the correct procedure for calculating perturbative expansions of steady-state properties of the system.

Out of equilibrium dynamics of a Quantum Heisenberg Spin Glass

We study the out of equilibrium dynamics of the infinite range quantum Heisenberg spin glass model coupled to a thermal relaxation bath. The SU(2) spin algebra is generalized to SU(N) and we analyse the large-N limit. The model displays a dynamical phase transition between a paramagnetic and a glassy phase. In the latter, the system remains out of equilibrium and displays an aging phenomenon, which we characterize using both analytical and numerical methods. In the aging regime, the quantum fluctuation-dissipation relation is violated and replaced at very long time by its classical generalization, as in models involving simple spin algebras studied previously. We also discuss the effect of a finite coupling to the relaxation baths and their possible forms. This work completes and justifies previous studies on this model using a static approach.

Is the quantum dot at large bias a weak-coupling problem?

We examine the two-lead Kondo model for a d.c. biased quantum dot in the Coulomb blockade regime. From perturbative calculations of the magnetic susceptibility, we show that the problem retains its strong-coupling nature, even at bias voltages larger than the equilibrium Kondo temperature. We give a speculative discussion of the nature of the renormalization group flows and the strong-coupling state that emerges at large voltage bias.

Quantum Fluctuations of a Nearly Critical Heisenberg Spin Glass

We describe the interplay of quantum and thermal fluctuations in the infinite-range Heisenberg spin glass. This model is generalized to SU(N) symmetry, and we describe the phase diagram as a function of the spin S and the temperature T. The model is solved in the large N limit and certain universal critical properties are shown to hold to all orders in 1/N. For large S, the ground state is a spin glass, but quantum effects are crucial in determining the low T thermodynamics: we find a specific heat linear in T and a local spectral density of spin excitations linear in frequency for a spin glass state which is marginally stable to fluctuations in the replicon modes. For small S, the spin-glass order is fragile, and a spin-liquid state dominates the properties over a significant range of temperatures and frequencies. We argue that the latter state may be relevant in understanding the properties of strongly-disordered transition metal and rare earth compounds.
