Importance of coupling strength in shaping electron energy loss and phonon spectra of phonon-plasmon systems

A systematic analysis of phonon-plasmon coupled excitations in three-dimensional (3D) polar systems is provided through the prism of both raw and integrated electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and phonon spectra in the whole relevant parametric space, spanned by the adiabaticity parameter and the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) strength. We show that the EPI strength plays a prominent role in distributing spectral weights among excitations, providing an experimentally convenient way to estimate it from integrated spectra. By projecting the excitations onto the phonon degree of freedom, we also report for strong couplings large phonon production contributions, which are of very different origins depending on the adiabaticity parameter. In parallel to this thorough spectral weights analysis, excitations' dispersion evolutions, dampings, and various limiting behaviors are qualitatively and quantitatively correctly accounted for in the whole parametric space.

Many-body localization as a percolation phenomenon

We examine the standard model of many-body localization (MBL), i.e., the disordered chain of interacting spinless fermions, by representing it as the network in the many-body (MB) basis of noninteracting localized Anderson states. By studying eigenstates of the full Hamiltonian, for strong disorders we find that the dynamics is confined up to very long times to disconnected MB clusters in the Fock space. By keeping only resonant contributions and simplifying the quantum problem to rate equations (REs) for MB states, in analogy with percolation problems, the MBL transition is located via the universal cluster distribution and the emergence of the macroscopic cluster. On the ergodic side, our approximate RE approach to the relaxation processes captures well the diffusion transport, as found for the full quantum model. In a broad transient regime, we find an anomalous, i.e., subdiffusivelike, transport, emerging from weak links between MB states.

Exact solution of electronic transport in semiconductors dominated by scattering on polaronic impurities

The scattering of electrons on impurities with internal degrees of freedom is bound to produce the signatures of the scatterer's own dynamics and results in nontrivial electronic transport properties. Previous studies of polaronic impurities in low-dimensional structures, like molecular junctions and one-dimensional nanowire models, have shown that perturbative treatments cannot account for a complex energy dependence of the scattering cross section in such systems. Here we derive the exact solution of polaronic impurities shaping the electronic transport in bulk (3D) systems. In the model with a short-ranged electron-phonon interaction, we solve for and sum over all elastic and inelastic partial cross sections, abundant in resonant features. The temperature dependence of the charge mobility shows the power-law dependence, $μ(T)\propto T^{-ν}$, with $ν$ being highly sensitive to impurity parameters. The latter may explain nonuniversal power-law exponents observed experimentally, e.g. in high-quality organic molecular semiconductors.

Manifestations of the electron-phonon interaction range in angle resolved photoemission spectra

Numerous angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies of a wide class of low-density metallic systems, ranging from doped transition metal oxides to quasi two-dimensional interfaces between insulators, exhibit phonon sidebands below the quasi-particle peak as a unique hallmark of polaronic correlations. Here, we single out properties of ARPES spectra that can provide a robust estimate of the effective range (screening length) of the electron-phonon interaction, regardless of the limited experimental resolution, dimensionality and particular features of the electronic structure, facilitating a general methodology for an analysis of a whole class of materials.

Absence of full many-body localization in the disordered Hubbard chain

We present numerical results within the one-dimensional disordered Hubbard model for several characteristic indicators of the many-body localization (MBL). Considering traditionally studied charge disorder (i.e., the same disorder strength for both spin orientations) we find that even at strong disorder all signatures consistently show that while charge degree of freedom is non-ergodic, the spin is delocalized and ergodic. This indicates the absence of the full MBL in the model that has been simulated in recent cold-atom experiments. Full localization can be restored if spin-dependent disorder is used instead.

Itinerant and high-energy localized single-particle spectra in large-U$_d$ high-Tc cuprates

A theory of the underlying metallic state of large-U$_d$ high-Tc cuprates is presented starting from the covalent Cu-2O 3-band model associated with a sufficiently small copper occupancy. U$_d=\infty$ is dealt by the slave fermion approach. Diagrammatic low order NCA theory in terms of the Cu-O hopping is supplemented with two independent slave particle chemical potentials which implement the U(1) local gauge invariance "at average", thus avoiding the mean-field approximations. The resulting hole spectra consist of itinerant and localized states. The itinerant states close to the Fermi level are coherent. They exhibit dichotomies, the copper/oxygen in real and the nodal/antinodal in reciprocal space. The localized states, related to random Cu-O "mixed valence" fluctuations within the CuO$_2$ unit cells, are incoherent and fall well away from the Fermi level. Consequently, Luttinger's band sum rule for the conduction band is broken. Comparison with IPES, ARPES and NQR data on NCCO, LSCO, Bi2201 and Bi2212 - in order of increasing correlations - leads to remarkable agreements considering that only three bare band parameters are involved.

Multiband responses in high-Tc cuprate superconductors

We report on the interplay of localized and extended degrees of freedom in the metallic state of high-temperature superconductors in a multiband setting. Various ways in which the bare magnetic response may become incommensurate are measured against both phenomenological and theoretical requirements. In particular, the pseudogap temperature is typically much higher than the incommensurability temperature. When microscopic strong-coupling effects with real-time dynamics between copper and oxygen sites are included, they tend to restore commensurability. Quantum transport equations for low-dimensional multiband electronic systems are used to explain the linear doping dependence of the dc conductivity and the doping and temperature dependence of the Hall number in the underdoped LSCO compounds. Coulomb effects of dopands are inferred from the doping evolution of the Hartree-Fock model parameters.

Bipolarons and polarons in the Holstein-Hubbard model: Analogies and differences

The single bipolaron problem is examined in the context of the 1D Holstein-Hubbard model, emphasizing analogies and differences with respect to the complementary single polaron physics. The bipolaron band structure below the phonon threshold is revealed, showing a complex relationship between numerous excited bands as the adiabatic limit is approached. Light bipolarons with significant binding energy, the stability of large bipolarons, the small to large bipolaron crossover as a function of the Hubbard repulsion, as well as the bipolaron dissociation, are investigated in detail, disentangling adiabatic, nonadiabatic and lattice coarsening effects. It is emphasized that condensation of bipolarons occurs in the dilute limit only at very low temperatures.

Large Ud theory for metallic high-Tc cuprates

A large-Ud theory is constructed for the metallic state of high-Tc cuprates. The Emery three-band model, extended with Ox-Oy hopping tpp, and with Ud tending to infinity, is mapped on slave fermions. The Dyson time-dependent diagrammatic theory in terms of the Cu-O hopping tpd, which starts from the nondegenerate unperturbed ground state, is translationally and asymptotically locally gauge invariant. The small parameter of the theory is nd. The lowest order of the theory generates the single particle propagators of the hybridized pdp- and dpd-fermions with the exact three band structure. The leading many-body effect is band narrowing, obtained without mean-field slave particle approximations. Damping found in the single particle propagation is related to incoherent Cu-O2 intracell "mixed valence" fluctuations. The corresponding continuum falls below the Fermi level. The conventional Luttinger sum rule for coherent bands is thus broken. Due to local gauge invariance, these results are insensitive to the replacement of the Cu-O anticommutations by commutations. This replacement affects the effective local kinematic repulsion Udμ between the hybridized pdp hole propagators. The a posteriori antisymmetrization of Udμ removes the repulsion between the pdp particles in the triplet configuration, keeping their singlet repulsion intact. Such a Udμ is moderate, and close to optimal doping favors the coherent, antinodal, low energy SDW correlations. Resonant valence bonds which involve Jpd appear as incoherent perturbative corrections to these correlations. In function of doping and/or frequency, the incoherent "mixed valence" fluctuations compete with magnetic coherence. This dichotomy, between properties local in the direct and reciprocal space, is the fundamental feature of the Emery model in the large Ud metallic limit.

Conductivity in a disordered one-dimensional system of interacting fermions

Dynamical conductivity in a disordered one-dimensional model of interacting fermions is studied numerically at high temperatures and in the weak-interaction regime in order to find a signature of many-body localization and vanishing d.c. transport coefficients. On the contrary, we find in the regime of moderately strong local disorder that the d.c. conductivity sigma0 scales linearly with the interaction strength while being exponentially dependent on the disorder. According to the behavior of the charge stiffness evaluated at the fixed number of particles, the absence of the many-body localization seems related to an increase of the effective localization length with the interaction.

Locally gauge invariant theory of large U_d high-Tc cuprates

The large U_d theory, based on the Emery three band model extended with the Ox-Oy hopping t_pp, is constructed for the metallic state of high-Tc cuprates, using the mapping on the slave fermion theory. The time-dependent diagrammatic theory in terms of the Cu-O hopping t_pd starts from the locally gauge invariant state with vanishing occupation of the Cu state and builds a finite n_d in higher orders. This theory is locally gauge invariant asymptotically, but replaces the d-p anticommutation between the Cu and O sites by the commutation and is antisymmetrized a posteriori. Rather than t_pd, the small parameter of the theory is n_d less or equal to 1/2. The leading many body effect is band narrowing, different from the mean-field one. It is accompanied by the d10-d9 intracell charge transfer disorder, which breaks the Luttinger sum rule for the conduction band. The corresponding damping of the single particle propagation is situated well below the Fermi level. The effective local repulsions between the hybridized pdp propagators show up beyond the third order. The a posteriori antisymmetrization removes the triplet repulsion between the pdp particles but keeps the singlet repulsion which favors incommensurate SDW correlations at low energy. Such repulsion is the metallic counterpart of the superexchange J_pd between the dpd propagators. Resonant valence bonds thus appear as perturbative corrections. The resulting theory is shown to compare favorably with numerous experiments, emphasizing the physical importance of the oxygen degrees of freedom.

Thermal transport in a spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain coupled to a (non) magnetic impurity

We explore the effect of a (non) magnetic impurity on the thermal transport of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain model. This unique system allows to probe Kondo-type phenomena in a prototype strongly correlated system. Using numerical diagonalization techniques we study the scaling of the frequency dependent thermal conductivity with system size and host-impurity coupling strength as well as the dependence on temperature. We focus in particular on the analysis of cutting-healing of weak links or a magnetic impurity by the host chain via Kondo-like screening as the temperature is lowered.
