Atmospheric Aerosol Limb Scanning Based on the Lunar Eclipses Photometry

The work is devoted to the analysis of the surface photometric observations of two total lunar eclipses in 2004. The lunar surface relative brightness distribution inside the umbra was used to retrieve the vertical distribution of aerosol extinction of the solar radiation expanding by a tangent path and its dependence on the location at the limb of the Earth. The upper altitude of troposphere aerosol layer was estimated for different latitude zones. The correlation between additional aerosol extinction in the upper troposphere and cyclones was investigated.

Effects Of Aerosol And Multiple Scattering On The Polarization Of The Twilight Sky

The paper contains the review of a number of wide-angle polarization CCD-measurements of the twilight sky in V and R color bands with effective wavelengths equal to 550 and 700 nm. The basic factors effecting (usually decreasing) on the polarization of the twilight sky are the atmospheric aerosol scattering and multiple scattering. The method of multiple scattering separation is being considered. The results are compared with the data of numerical simulation of radiation transfer in the atmosphere for different aerosol models. The whole twilight period is divided on the different stages with different mechanisms forming the twilight sky polarization properties.

Polarization of the Twilight Sky: Measurements, Empirical Model, Radiative Transfer Simulation and Application to Aerosol Profile Retrieval

Polarimetric observations of the twilight sky are effective for the investigations of scattering properties of the atmosphere at different altitudes. Modern computer technique allows to reduce the influence of multiple scattering on the twilight sky background which is necessary for the aerosol investigations. In this paper the results of polarimetric observations of the twilight sky are discussed and compared with the numerical analysis by MCC++ model for different models of atmospheric aerosol. As it was found, the model of urban troposheric and background stratospheric aerosol shows the best agreement with observed polarimetric properties of the twilight sky.
