Metal Foil Detectors assembly for the beam and background monitoring in the LHCb experiment

After an upgrade in 2019--2021, the LHCb experiment is taking data in Run 3 (2022--2026) with an instantaneous luminosity of proton-proton collisions of $2\!\times\!10^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. This article presents the Radiation Monitoring System (RMS-R3) for controlling the beam and background conditions at LHCb. It runs continuously during the detector's operation, and independently of the main LHCb data acquisition. Its design is based on robust and radiation-hard Metal Foil Detector technology. The RMS-R3 monitors the instantaneous luminosity and its evolution. The analysis of the RMS-R3 Run 3 data demonstrates its linear response with a high reproducibility in a five orders of magnitude dynamic range of luminosity over a long period of operation.

HFLAV input to the 2026 update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics

Heavy-flavour physics is an essential component of the particle-physics programme, offering critical tests of the Standard Model and far-reaching sensitivity to physics beyond it. Experiments such as LHCb, Belle II, and BESIII drive progress in the field, along with contributions from ATLAS and CMS. The LHCb Upgrade II and upgraded Belle II experiments will provide unique and highly sensitive measurements for decades, playing a key role in the searches for new physics. Future facilities with significant heavy-flavour capabilities will further expand these opportunities. We advocate for a European Strategy that fully supports Upgrade II of LHCb and an upgrade of Belle II, along with their subsequent exploitation. Additionally, we support a long-term plan that fully integrates flavour physics in an $e^+e^-$ collider to run as a $Z$ factory.

Vertex Imaging Hadron Calorimetry Using AI/ML Tools

The fluctuations in energy loss to processes that do not generate measurable signals, such as binding energy losses, set the limit on achievable hadronic energy resolution in traditional energy reconstruction techniques. The correlation between the number of hadronic interaction vertices in a shower and invisible energy is found to be strong and is used to estimate invisible energy fraction in highly granular calorimeters in short time intervals (<10 ns). We simulated images of hadronic showers using GEANT4 and deployed a neural network to analyze the images for energy regression. The neural network-based approach results in significant improvement in energy resolution, from 13 % to 4 % in the case of a Cherenkov calorimeter for 100 GeV pion showers. We discuss the significance of the phenomena responsible for this improvement and the plans for experimental verification of these results and further development.

High-granularity Dual-readout Calorimeter: Evolution of a Classic Prototype

The original dual-readout calorimeter prototype (DREAM), constructed two decades ago, has proven instrumental in advancing our understanding of calorimetry. It has facilitated a multitude of breakthroughs by leveraging signals from complementary media (Cherenkov and scintillation) to capture fluctuations in electromagnetic energy fraction within hadronic showers. Over the years, extensive studies have shed light on the performance characteristics of this module, rendering it exceptionally well-understood. Drawing on this wealth of experience, we have embarked on enhancing the detectors' capabilities further by integrating fast silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) with finer transverse segmentation, $\sim$1 cm$^2$, as well as longitudinal segmentation by timing measuring better than 10 cm. This configuration will allow us to image hadronic showers with high granularity (HG-DREAM). We argue that the spatial information provided by such a granular detector in a short time window ($\approx$5 ns) leads to substantial enhancement in energy resolution when advanced neural networks are employed in energy reconstruction. We briefly present the current status of work, new concepts that have been introduced to the detector, and expectations from simulations.

Azimuthal asymmetries of back-to-back $π^\pm-(π^0,η,π^\pm)$ pairs in $e^+e^-$ annihilation

This work reports the first observation of azimuthal asymmetries around the thrust axis in $e^+e^-$ annihilation of pairs of back-to-back charged pions in one hemisphere, and $π^0$ and $η$ mesons in the opposite hemisphere. These results are complemented by a new analysis of pairs of back-to-back charged pions. The $π^0$ and $η$ asymmetries rise with the relative momentum $z$ of the detected hadrons as well as with the transverse momentum with respect to the thrust axis. These asymmetries are sensitive to the Collins fragmentation function $H_1^{\perp}$ and provide complementary information to previous measurements with charged pions and kaons in the final state. In particular, the $η$ final states will provide additional information on the flavor structure of $H_1^{\perp}$. This is the first measurement of the explicit transverse-momentum dependence of the Collins fragmentation function from Belle data. It uses a dataset of 980.4~fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle experiment at or near a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV.

New Low Surface Brightness Dwarf Galaxies Detected Around Nearby Spirals

We conduct a survey of low surface brightness (LSB) satellite galaxies around the Local Volume massive spirals using long exposures with small amateur telescopes. We identified 27 low and very low surface brightness objects around the galaxies NGC,672, 891, 1156, 2683, 3344, 4258, 4618, 4631, and 5457 situated within 10 Mpc from us, and found nothing new around NGC,2903, 3239, 4214, and 5585. Assuming that the dwarf candidates are the satellites of the neighboring luminous galaxies, their absolute magnitudes are in the range of -8.6 > M_B > -13.3, their effective diameters are 0.4-4.7 kpc, and the average surface brightness is 26.1 mag/sq arcsec. The mean linear projected separation of the satellite candidates from the host galaxies is 73 kpc. Our spectroscopic observations of two LSB dwarfs with the Russian 6-meter telescope confirm their physical connection to the host galaxies NGC,891 and NGC,2683.

Performance of the LHCb Vertex Locator

The Vertex Locator (VELO) is a silicon microstrip detector that surrounds the proton-proton interaction region in the LHCb experiment. The performance of the detector during the first years of its physics operation is reviewed. The system is operated in vacuum, uses a bi-phase CO2 cooling system, and the sensors are moved to 7 mm from the LHC beam for physics data taking. The performance and stability of these characteristic features of the detector are described, and details of the material budget are given. The calibration of the timing and the data processing algorithms that are implemented in FPGAs are described. The system performance is fully characterised. The sensors have a signal to noise ratio of approximately 20 and a best hit resolution of 4 microns is achieved at the optimal track angle. The typical detector occupancy for minimum bias events in standard operating conditions in 2011 is around 0.5%, and the detector has less than 1% of faulty strips. The proximity of the detector to the beam means that the inner regions of the n+-on-n sensors have undergone space-charge sign inversion due to radiation damage. The VELO performance parameters that drive the experiment's physics sensitivity are also given. The track finding efficiency of the VELO is typically above 98% and the modules have been aligned to a precision of 1 micron for translations in the plane transverse to the beam. A primary vertex resolution of 13 microns in the transverse plane and 71 microns along the beam axis is achieved for vertices with 25 tracks. An impact parameter resolution of less than 35 microns is achieved for particles with transverse momentum greater than 1 GeV/c.

Search for the process $e^+e^-\to J/ψ+ X(1835)$ at $\sqrt{s}\approx10.6$GeV

We report the results of a search for the $X(1835)$ state in the process $e^+e^-\to J/ψ+X(1835)$ using a data sample of 672 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at and near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. No significant evidence is found for this process, and an upper limit is set on its cross section times the branching fraction: $σ_{\rm Born}(e^+e^- \to J/ψX(1835)) \cdot$ {${\cal B}(X(1835)\to \ge 3$ charged tracks)} $< 1.3 \ {\rm fb}$ at 90% confidence level.

Application of vertex and mass constraints in track-based alignment

The software alignment of planar tracking detectors using samples of charged particle trajectories may lead to global detector distortions that affect vertex and momentum resolution. We present an alignment procedure that constrains such distortions by making use of samples of decay vertices reconstructed from two or more trajectories and putting constraints on their invariant mass. We illustrate the method by using a sample of invariant-mass constrained vertices from D^0 --> K^- pi^+ decays to remove a curvature bias in the LHCb spectrometer.
