Photoproduction of eta meson within a coupled-channels K-matrix approach

We investigate photoproduction of eta mesons off protons and neutrons within a coupled-channels effective-Lagrangian method which is based on the K-matrix approach. The two-body final channels included are pi-N, eta-N, phi-N, rho-N, gamma-N, K-Lambda, and K-Sigma. Non-resonant meson-baryon interactions are included in the model via nucleon intermediate states in the s- and u-channels, meson exchanges in the t-channel amplitude and the u-channel resonances. The nucleon resonances S_{11}(1535), S_{11}(1650), S_{31}(1620), P_{11}(1440), P_{11}(1710), P_{13}(1720), P_{33}(1232), P_{33}(1600), D_{13}(1520), D_{13}(1700), and D_{33}(1700) are included explicitly in calculations. Our model describes simultaneously the available data as well on total and differential cross sections as on beam and target asymmetries. This holds for the p(gamma, eta)p reaction for photon energies ranging from very close to threshold to up to 3 GeV. The polarization observables show strong sensitivity to resonances that otherwise contribute only weakly to the total cross section. It is found that the pronounced bump-like structure seen in the excitation function of the n(gamma, eta)n cross section at gamma energies around 1 GeV, can be explained by the interference effects of S_{11}, P_{11} and P_{13} resonance contributions.

Status report of the NuMoon experiment

We show that at wavelengths comparable to the length of the shower produced by an Ultra-High Energy cosmic ray or neutrino, radio signals are an extremely efficient way to detect these particles. First results are presented of an analysis of 20 hours of observation data for NuMoon project using the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope to search for short radio pulses from the Moon. A limit on the neutrino flux is set that is a factor four better than the current one (based on FORTE).

The NuMoon experiment: first results

The NuMoon project uses the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope to search for short radio pulses from the Moon. These pulses are created when an ultra high energy cosmic ray or neutrino initiates a particle cascade inside the Moon's regolith. The cascade has a negative charge excess and moves faster than the local speed of light, which causes coherent Cherenkov radiation to be emitted. With 100 hours of data, a limit on the neutrino flux can be set that is an order of magnitude better than the current one (based on FORTE). We present an analysis of the first 10 hours of data.

Detecting UHE Cosmics & Neutrinos off the Moon; an Optimal Radio Window

We show that at wavelengths comparable to the length of the shower produced by an Ultra-High Energy cosmic ray or neutrino, radio signals are an extremely efficient way to detect these particles. Through an example it is shown that this new approach offers, for the first time, the realistic possibility of measuring UHE neutrino fluxes below the Waxman-Bahcall limit. It is shown that in only one month of observing with the upcoming LOFAR radio telescope, cosmic-ray events can be measured beyond the GZK-limit, at a sensitivity level of two orders of magnitude below the extrapolated values.

Optimal Radio Window for the Detection of Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Rays and Neutrinos off the Moon

When high-energy cosmic rays impinge on a dense dielectric medium, radio waves are produced through the Askaryan effect. K-Lambda and K-Sigma photoproduction in a coupled channels framework

A coupled channels analysis, based on the K-matrix approach, is presented for photo-induced kaon production. It is shown that channel coupling effects are large and should not be ignored. The importance of contact terms in the analysis, associated with short range correlations, is pointed out. The extracted parameters are compared with SU(3)-model predictions.

Patterns of the ground states in the presence of random interactions: nucleon systems

We present our results on properties of ground states for nucleonic systems in the presence of random two-body interactions. In particular we present probability distributions for parity, seniority, spectroscopic (i.e., in the laboratory framework) quadrupole moments and $α$ clustering in the ground states. We find that the probability distribution for the parity of the ground states obtained by a two-body random ensemble simulates that of realistic nuclei: positive parity is dominant in the ground states of even-even nuclei while for odd-odd nuclei and odd-mass nuclei we obtain with almost equal probability ground states with positive and negative parity. In addition we find that for the ground states, assuming pure random interactions, low seniority is not favored, no dominance of positive values of spectroscopic quadrupole deformation, and no sign of $α$-cluster correlations, all in sharp contrast to realistic nuclei. Considering a mixture of a random and a realistic interaction, we observe a second order phase transition for the $α$-cluster correlation probability.

The Adler-Weisberger and Goldberger-Miyazawa-Oehme sum rules as probes of constraints from analyticity and chiral symmetry in dynamical models for pion-nucleon scattering

The Adler-Weisberger and Goldberger-Miyazawa-Oehme sum rules are calculated within a relativistic, unitary and crossing symmetric dynamical model for pion-nucleon scattering using two different methods: 1) by evaluating the scattering amplitude at the corresponding low-energy kinematics and 2) by evaluating the sum-rule integrals with the calculated total cross section. The discrepancy between the results of the two methods provides a measure of the breaking of analyticity and chiral symmetry in the model. The contribution of the $Δ$ resonance, including its dressing with meson loops, is discussed in some detail and found to be small.

Comparing phenomenological recipes with a microscopic model for the electric amplitude in strangeness photoproduction

Corrections to the Born approximation in photo-induced strangeness production off a proton are calculated in a semi-realistic microscopic model. The vertex corrections and internal contributions to the amplitude of the $γp \to K^+ Λ$ reaction are included on the one-loop level. Different gauge-invariant phenomenological prescriptions for the modification of the Born contribution via the introduction of form factors and contact terms are discussed. In particular, it is shown that the popular minimal-substitution method of Ohta corresponds to a special limit of the more realistic approach.

Compton Scattering on the Proton

A microscopic coupled-channels model for Compton and pion scattering off the nucleon is introduced which is applicable at the lowest energies (polarizabilities) as well as at GeV energies. To introduce the model first the conventional K-matrix approach is discussed to extend this in a following chapter to the "Dressed K-Matrix" model. The latter approach restores causality, or analyticity, of the amplitude to a large extent. In particular, crossing symmetry, gauge invariance and unitarity are satisfied. The extent of violation of analyticity (causality) is used as an expansion parameter.

Virtual-pion and two-photon production in pp scattering

Two-photon production in pp scattering is proposed as a means of studying virtual-pion emission. Such a process is complementary to real-pion emission in pp scattering. The virtual-pion signal is embedded in a background of double-photon bremsstrahlung. We have developed a model to describe this background process and show that in certain parts of phase space the virtual-pion signal gives significant contribution. In addition, through interference with the two-photon bremsstrahlung background, one can determine the relative phase of the virtual-pion process.

Low-energy Compton scattering on the nucleon and sum rules

The Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn and Baldin-Lapidus sum rules are evaluated in the dressed K-matrix model for photon-induced reactions on the nucleon. For the first time the sum $α+β$ of the electric and magnetic polarisabilities and the forward spin polarisability $γ_0$ are explicitly calculated in two alternative ways -- from the sum rules and from the low-energy expansion of the real Compton scattering amplitude -- within the {\em same} framework. The two methods yield compatible values for $α+β$ but differ somewhat for $γ_0$. Consistency between the two ways of determining the polarisabilities is a measure of the extent to which basic symmetries of the model are obeyed.

Covariant model for proton-proton bremsstrahlung: Comparison with high-precision data

We compare a relativistic covariant model for proton-proton bremsstrahlung with high-quality data from KVI. The agreement in large parts of phase space is satisfactory. However, remarkably large discrepancies are observed for specific kinematic regions. These failures are shown to occur primarily when the final two-nucleon system has energies less than about 15 MeV.

Coherent Compton scattering on light nuclei in the delta resonance region

Coherent Compton scattering on light nuclei in the delta resonance region is studied in the impulse approximation and is shown to be a sensitive probe of the in-medium properties of the delta resonance. The elementary amplitude on a single nucleon is calculated from the unitary K-matrix approach developed previously. Modifications of the properties of the delta resonance due to the nuclear medium are accounted for through the self-energy operator of the delta, calculated from the one-pion loop. The dominant medium effects such as the Pauli blocking, mean-field modification of the nucleon and delta masses, and particle-hole excitations in the pion propagator are consistently included in nuclear matter.

Compton scattering on the nucleon at intermediate energies and polarizabilities in a microscopic model

A microscopic calculation of Compton scattering on the nucleon is presented which encompasses the lowest energies -- yielding nucleon polarizabilities -- and extends to energies of the order of 600 MeV. We have used the covariant "Dressed K-Matrix Model" obeying the symmetry properties which are appropriate in the different energy regimes. In particular, crossing symmetry, gauge invariance and unitarity are satisfied. The extent of violation of analyticity (causality) is used as an expansion parameter.

Photoproduction of electron-positron pairs on the proton in the resonance region

Production of lepton pairs in gamma p -> e-e+ p reaction is studied at photon energies up to 1 GeV. We show that even if lepton charge is not measured there are extensive kinematical regimes where the nuclear process dominates over the Bethe-Heitler contribution. The decomposition is performed of the unpolarized cross section for the virtual Compton scattering in terms of response functions. These are expressed in terms of a polarization density matrix of the virtual photon and are shown to be sensitive to the properties of baryon resonances in the first and the second resonance regions. In the analysis a unitary K-matrix model is used, based on an effective Lagrangian including nucleon, mesons, and baryon resonances with masses up to 1.7 GeV. Results of the model are compared with data for real-photon Compton scattering and predictions are given for observables in photoproduction of lepton pairs.
