Order by distortion and string modes in pyrochlore antiferromagnet

We study the effects of magnetoelastic couplings on pyrochlore antiferromagnets. We employ Landau theory, extending an investigation begun by Yamashita and Ueda for the case of S=1, and semiclassical analyses to argue that such couplings generate bond order via a spin--Peierls transition. This is followed by, or concurrent with, a transition into one of several possible low-temperature Neel phases, with most simply collinear, but also coplanar or mixed spin patterns. In a collinear Neel phase, a dispersionless string-like magnon mode dominates the resulting excitation spectrum, providing a distinctive signature of the parent geometrically frustrated state. We comment on the experimental situation.

Where is the pi particle?

We discuss the interplay of particle-particle and particle-hole spin-triplet channels in high-T_c superconductors using a quasiparticle dispersion motivated by angle-resolved photoemission. Within a generalized RPA, we find a well defined antibound state of two holes, the pi resonance of Demler and Zhang, as well as a bound state of a particle and a hole, the spin exciton. We show that the energy of the pi resonance always exceeds 2 Delta, twice the maximum d-wave gap, therefore the neutron resonance observed in the cuprates around energy Delta is most likely a spin exciton. At the same time, we speculate that the pi particle can exist at higher energies and might be observed in neutron scattering around 100 meV.

Non-interacting Cooper pairs inside a pseudogap

I present a simple analytical model describing the normal state of a superconductor with a pseudogap in the density of states, such as in underdoped cuprates. In nearly two-dimensional systems, where the superconducting transition temperature is reduced from the mean-field BCS value, Cooper pairs may be present as slow fluctuations of the BCS pairing field. Using the self-consistent T-matrix (fluctuation exchange) approach I find that the fermion spectral weight exhibits two BCS-like peaks, broadened by fluctuations of the pairing field amplitude. The density of states becomes suppressed near the Fermi energy, which allows for long-lived low-energy Cooper pairs that propagate as a sound-like mode with a mass. A self-consistency requirement, linking the width of the pseudogap to the intensity of the pairing field, determines the pair condensation temperature. In nearly two-dimensional systems, it is proportional to the degeneracy temperature of the fermions, with a small prefactor that vanishes in two dimensions.

Comment on "Boson-fermion model beyond the mean-field approximation"

In a recent paper [A.S.Alexandrov, J.Phys.:Condens.Matter 8, 6923 (1996); cond-mat/9603111], it has been suggested that there is no Cooper pairing in boson-fermion models of superconductivity. We show that this conjecture is based on an inconsistent approximation that violates an exact identity. Quite generally, the divergence of the fermion t-matrix (the Thouless criterion) is accompanied by the condensation of a boson mode.

Extended bound states and resonances of two fermions on a periodic lattice

The high-$T_c$ cuprates are possible candidates for d-wave superconductivity, with the Cooper pair wave function belonging to a non-trivial irreducible representation of the lattice point group. We argue that this d-wave symmetry is related to a special form of the fermionic kinetic energy and does not require any novel pairing mechanism. In this context, we present a detailed study of the bound states and resonances formed by two lattice fermions interacting via a non-retarded potential that is attractive for nearest neighbors but repulsive for other relative positions. In the case of strong binding, a pair formed by fermions on adjacent lattice sites can have a small effective mass, thereby implying a high condensation temperature. For a weakly bound state, a pair with non-trivial symmetry tends to be smaller in size than an s-wave pair. These and other findings are discussed in connection with the properties of high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors.

Cooper pairs as low-energy excitations in the normal state

We discuss the normal state of a fermionic system in an idealized PSEUDOGAP REGIME, $k_B T_c < k_B T << |Δ| << E_F$. Stable Cooper pairs induce a pseudogap of width $|Δ|$ in the fermion energy spectrum. Near two dimensions, we find a Bose-like condensation temperature in this predominantly fermionic system.
