Theoretical tools for neutrino scattering: interplay between lattice QCD, EFTs, nuclear physics, phenomenology, and neutrino event generators

Maximizing the discovery potential of increasingly precise neutrino experiments will require an improved theoretical understanding of neutrino-nucleus cross sections over a wide range of energies. Low-energy interactions are needed to reconstruct the energies of astrophysical neutrinos from supernovae bursts and search for new physics using increasingly precise measurement of coherent elastic neutrino scattering. Higher-energy interactions involve a variety of reaction mechanisms including quasi-elastic scattering, resonance production, and deep inelastic scattering that must all be included to reliably predict cross sections for energies relevant to DUNE and other accelerator neutrino experiments. This white paper discusses the theoretical status, challenges, required resources, and path forward for achieving precise predictions of neutrino-nucleus scattering and emphasizes the need for a coordinated theoretical effort involved lattice QCD, nuclear effective theories, phenomenological models of the transition region, and event generators.

Two-photon exchange correction to the hyperfine splitting in muonic hydrogen

We reevaluate the Zemach, recoil and polarizability corrections to the hyperfine splitting in muonic hydrogen expressing them through the low-energy proton structure constants and obtain the precise values of the Zemach radius and two-photon exchange (TPE) contribution. The uncertainty of TPE correction to S energy levels in muonic hydrogen of 105 ppm exceeds the ppm accuracy level of the forthcoming 1S hyperfine splitting measurements at PSI, J-PARC and RIKEN-RAL.

Two-photon exchange contribution to elastic $e^-$-proton scattering: Full dispersive treatment of $πN$ states and comparison with data

We evaluate the two-photon exchange correction to the elastic electron-proton scattering cross section within a dispersive framework. Besides the elastic contribution, we account for all $πN$ intermediate state contributions using the phenomenological MAID fit as an input. We develop a novel method for the analytical continuation of the two-photon exchange amplitudes into the unphysical region and generalize our previous work to the momentum transfer region $ 0.064~\mathrm{GeV}^2 \lesssim Q^2 \lesssim 1~\mathrm{GeV}^2$. We compare our results with recent OLYMPUS, CLAS and VEPP-3 data as well as with empirical fits and estimates in the forward angular region.

Two-photon exchange corrections to elastic $e^-$-proton scattering: Full dispersive treatment of $πN$ states at low momentum transfers

We evaluate the pion-nucleon intermediate-state contribution to the two-photon exchange (TPE) correction in the elastic electron-nucleon scattering within a dispersive framework. We calculate the contribution from all $πN$ partial waves using the MAID parametrization. We provide the corresponding TPE correction to the unpolarized $e p$ scattering cross section in the region of low momentum transfer $ Q^2 \lesssim 0.064~\mathrm{GeV}^2$, where no analytical continuation into the unphysical region of the TPE scattering amplitudes is required. We compare our result in the forward angular region with an alternative TPE calculation, in terms of structure functions, and find a good agreement, indicating a small contribution at low $Q^2$ due to discontinuities beyond $ πN$. We also compare our results with empirical fits.

Two-photon exchange correction to muon-proton elastic scattering at low momentum transfer

We evaluate the two-photon exchange (TPE) correction to the muon-proton elastic scattering at small momentum transfer. Besides the elastic (nucleon) intermediate state contribution, which is calculated exactly, we account for the inelastic intermediate states by expressing the TPE process approximately through the forward doubly virtual Compton scattering. The input in our evaluation is given by the unpolarized proton structure functions and by one subtraction function. For the latter, we provide an explicit evaluation based on a Regge fit of high-energy proton structure function data. It is found that, for the kinematics of the forthcoming muon-proton elastic scattering data of the MUSE experiment, the elastic TPE contribution dominates, and the size of the inelastic TPE contributions is within the anticipated error of the forthcoming data.

Two-photon exchange corrections in elastic electron-proton scattering

We apply a subtracted dispersion relation (DR) formalism with the aim to improve predictions for the two-photon exchange (TPE) corrections to elastic electron-proton scattering observables at small momentum transfers. We study the formalism on the elastic TPE contribution in comparison with existing data for unpolarized cross sections. We extend the general formalism of TPE to elastic scattering with massive lepton and perform a numerical estimate of the muon-proton scattering at low momentum transfer in view of the upcoming muon-proton scattering experiment (MUSE). We study the influence of the double-virtual Compton scattering (VVCS) subtraction function on the unpolarized lepton-proton scattering cross-section. We show that the resulting TPE correction is negligible in the electron-proton scattering and smaller than planned uncertainties of the MUSE experiment for the subtraction functions evaluated in chiral perturbation theory.

Two-photon exchange correction in elastic unpolarized electron-proton scattering at small momentum transfer

We evaluate the two-photon exchange (TPE) correction to the unpolarized elastic electron-proton scattering at small momentum transfer $ Q^2 $. We account for the inelastic intermediate states approximating the double virtual Compton scattering by the unpolarized forward virtual Compton scattering. The unpolarized proton structure functions are used as input for the numerical evaluation of the inelastic contribution. Our calculation reproduces the leading terms in the $ Q^2 $ expansion of the TPE correction and goes beyond this approximation by keeping the full $ Q^2 $ dependence of the proton structure functions. In the range of small momentum transfer, our result is in good agreement with the empirical TPE fit to existing data.

Subtracted dispersion relation formalism for the two-photon exchange correction to elastic electron-proton scattering: comparison with data

We apply a subtracted dispersion relation formalism with the aim to improve predictions for the two-photon exchange corrections to elastic electron-proton scattering observables at finite momentum transfers. We study the formalism on the elastic contribution, and make a detailed comparison with existing data for unpolarized cross sections as well as polarization transfer observables.

Two-photon exchange corrections in elastic muon-proton scattering

We extend the general formalism of two-photon exchange to elastic lepton-nucleon scattering by accounting for all lepton mass terms. We then perform a numerical estimate of the muon-proton scattering at low momentum transfer in view of the future MUSE experiment. For this purpose, we estimate the two-photon exchange corrections to muon-proton scattering observables by considering the contribution of the proton intermediate state, which is expected to dominate at very low momentum transfers. We find that the two-photon exchange effect to the unpolarized muon- proton scattering cross section in the MUSE kinematical region is of the order of 0.5%.
