Probing supermassive black hole growth and its dependence on stellar mass and star-formation rate in low-redshift galaxies

We present an improved study of the relation between supermassive black hole growth and their host galaxy properties in the local Universe (z < 0.33). To this end, we build an extensive sample combining spectroscopic measurements of star-formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass from Sloan Digital Sky Survey, with specific Black Hole accretion rate (sBHAR, $\lambda_{\mathrm{sBHAR}} \propto L_{\mathrm{X}}/\mathcal{M}_{\ast}$) derived from the XMM-Newton Serendipitous Source Catalogue (3XMM-DR8) and the Chandra Source Catalogue (CSC 2.0). We find that the sBHAR probability distribution for both star-forming and quiescent galaxies has a power-law shape peaking at $\log\lambda_{\mathrm{sBHAR}}\sim -3.5$ and declining toward lower sBHAR in all stellar mass ranges. This finding confirms the decrease of AGN activity in the local Universe compared to higher redshifts. We observe a significant correlation between $\log\,\lambda_{\mathrm{sBHAR}}$ and $\log\,{\mathrm{SFR}}$ in almost all stellar mass ranges, but the relation is shallower compared to higher redshifts, indicating a reduced availability of accreting material in the local Universe. At the same time, the BHAR-to-SFR ratio for star-forming galaxies strongly correlates with stellar mass, supporting the scenario where both AGN activity and stellar formation primarily depend on the stellar mass via fuelling by a common gas reservoir. Conversely, this ratio remains constant for quiescent galaxies, possibly indicating the existence of the different physical mechanisms responsible for AGN fuelling or different accretion mode in quiescent galaxies.

X-ray luminosity-star formation rate scaling relation: Constraints from the eROSITA Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS)

We present measurements of the relation between X-ray luminosity and star formation activity for a sample of normal galaxies spanning the redshift range between 0 and 0.25. We use data acquired by SRG/eROSITA for the performance and verification phase program called eROSITA Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS). The eFEDS galaxies are observed in the 0.2-2.3 keV band. Making use of a wide range of ancillary data, spanning from the ultraviolet (UV) to mid-infrared wavelengths (MIR), we estimated the star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass ($M_{star}$) of 888 galaxies, using Code Investigating GALaxy Emission (CIGALE). We divided our sample of normal galaxies in star-forming (SFGs) and quiescent galaxies according to their position on the main sequence. We confirm a linear correlation between the X-ray luminosity and the SFR for our sample of SFGs, as shown previously in the literature. However, we find this relation to be strongly biased by the completeness limit of the eFEDS survey. Correcting for completeness, we find the fitted relation to be consistent with the literature. We also investigated the relation between X-ray emission from both LMXBs and HMXBs populations with $M_{star}$ and SFR, respectively. Correcting for completeness, we find our fitted relation to considerably scatter from the literature relation at high specific SFR ($SFR/M_{star}$). We conclude that without accounting for X-ray non-detections, it is not possible to employ eFEDS data to study the redshift evolution of the LMXBs and HMXBs contributions due to completeness issues. Furthermore, we find our sources to largely scatter from the expected Lx/SFR vs specific SFR relation at high redshift. We discuss the dependence of the scatter on the stellar mass, metallicity, or the globular cluster content of the galaxy.

Dependence between some spectral and physical characteristics of quasars

Using 192 composite spectra stacked from subsamples of individual SDSS DR7 quasar spectra binned in spectral index, $α_λ$, and logarithm of monochromatic luminosity at 1450 Å, $\log{l_{1450}}$, we found that there is a dependence of the emission line equivalent width (EW) on spectral index (correlation or anti-correlation) for some lines, mostly for those lines for which the Baldwin effect is detected. We also show that there is no dependence between the virial mass of the central supermassive black hole of a quasar and its spectral index $α_λ$.

Astrophysical and cosmological problems of invisible mass and dark energy in the Universe

The Workshop on results of the Project Kosmomikrofizyka-2 (Astroparticle Physics) of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) of Ukraine "Astrophysical and cosmological problems of invisible mass and dark energy in the Universe" was held on November 21-22, 2012 in the Institute for Nuclear Research, Kyiv, Ukraine (http://lpd.kinr.kiev.ua/kmf12). This Project was carried out during three years (2010-2012) by scientists from various universities and institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine; it was a logical continuation of the previous scientific program of the NAS of Ukraine "Researches of structure and composition of the Universe, hidden mass and dark energy (Kosmomikrofizyka)" in 2007-2009. These programs were devoted to theoretical and experimental investigations in astronomy, astrophysics, cosmology, physics of atomic nuclei and particle physics, which are related with the problems of dark matter and dark energy in the Universe.

Composite spectra of quasars with different UV spectral index

The composite spectra of quasars are widely used as templates for redshift determination, as well as for measurements of the mean transmission in Lyα-forest studies, and for investigation of general spectral properties of quasars. Possibility of composite spectra utilisation in these fields is related to remarkable similarity of quasar spectra in UV-optical range. But despite of general similarity in spectral shapes, they differ in several parameters, one of which is the spectral index. In the present paper we study the possible effects, related to neglect of this difference. We compiled 16 composite spectra from subsamples of individual SDSS DR7 quasar spectra with different spectral indices α_λwithin the wavelength range 1270-1480 Å, and show that (i) the redshifts measured for a test sample of high signal-to-noise ratio quasar spectra using these composites as templates appear to be systematically higher than those calculated with a traditional template, compiled from spectra with different α_λ, with 1.5 times smaller errors in the former case; (ii) the difference in α_λin individual spectra used for compilation of composites can yield the mean transmission uncertainty up to 20%; (iii) a number of emission lines indistinguishable in ordinary composites, but seen in individual high-resolution spectra, can be detected in such composites. It is also shown, that there is no dependence of α_λon quasar luminosity in SDSS u, g, r and i bands, and monochromatic luminosity at 1450 Å.

Some spectral properties of the quasar ultraviolet bump

In the present work the part of the quasar UV-optical bump within the wavelength range 1210-1450Å was studied with the help of composite spectra compiled from the samples of SDSS DR7 spectra with the similar spectral index α_λ within 1270-1480 Å. This division allowed to see weak emission lines, which were not detected in previous studies of the quasar composite spectra, but were known from individual optical or composite UV spectra from the Hubble Space Telescope. Although the physical explanation of the difference in spectral indices between quasars and their dependence on quasar parameters is still not clear, it is obvious that this difference has to be taken into account when generating composite spectra, e.g. for redshift measurements. It was also shown that the equivalent width of the emission lines does not depend on the spectral index.
