Normal and superconducting state in the presence of forward electron-phonon and impurity scattering

Impurities with the pronounced forward scattering (FS impurities) change analytical properties of the quasiparticle Green's function substantially compared to the isotropic scattering. By assuming that the superconducting pairing is due to the forward E-P scattering (FEP pairing) it is shown that the critical temperature of clean systems T_{c0} depends linearly on the E-P coupling constant λand the isotope effect αis small. The FS impurities make α=1/2 in the dirty limit and affect in the same way the s- and d-wave FEP pairing. The FS impurities are pair-weakening in both pairing channels. The usual isotropic impurity scattering is pair-weakening for the s-wave and pair-breaking for the d-wave FEP pairing.

Evidence for strong electron-phonon coupling and polarons in the optical response of La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4

The normal state optical response of La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 is found to be consistent with a simple multi-component model, based on free carriers with strong electron-phonon interaction, localized polaronic states near 0.15 eV and a mid-infrared band at 0.5 eV. Normal state reflectance and absorbance of La_{1.83}Sr_{0.17}CuO_4 are investigated and their temperature dependence is explained. Both, the ac and dc response are recovered and the quasi-linear behavior of the optical scattering rate up to 3000- 4000 cm^{-1} is found to be consistent with strong electron-phonon interaction, which also accounts for the value of T_c. Although not strictly applicable in the superconducting state, our simple model accounts for the observed penetration depth and the optical response below T_c can be recovered by introducing a small amount of additional carriers. Our findings suggest that the optical response of La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 could be explained both, in the normal and superconducting state, by a simple multi-fluid model with strong electron-phonon interaction if the gap symmetry and the temperature dependence of the 0.5 eV mid-infrared band are adequately taken into account.

Optical absorption in the strong coupling limit of Eliashberg theory

We calculate the optical conductivity of superconductors in the strong-coupling limit. In this anomalous limit the typical energy scale is set by the coupling energy, and other energy scales such as the energy of the bosons mediating the attraction are negligibly small. We find a universal frequency dependence of the optical absorption which is dominated by bound states and differs significantly from the weak coupling results. A comparison with absorption spectra of superconductors with enhanced electron-phonon coupling shows that typical features of the strong-coupling limit are already present at intermediate coupling.

Observation of the Holstein shift in high $T_c$ superconductors with thermal modulation reflectometry

We use the experimental technique of thermal modulation reflectometry to study the relatively small temperature dependence of the optical conductivity of superconductors. Due to a large cancellation of systematic errors, this technique is shown to a be very sensitive probe of small changes in reflectivity. We analyze thermal modulation reflection spectra of single crystals and epitaxially grown thin films of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ and obtain the ${α_tr}^2F(ω)$ function in the normal state, as well as the superconductivity induced changes in reflectivity. We present detailed model calculations, based on the Eliashberg-Migdal extension of the BCS model, which show good qualitative and quantitative agreement with the experimental spectra. VSGD.93.12.th
