Generalized Parton Distrbutions and Nucleon Form Factors

The Dirac and Pauli form factors of the proton and neutron are obtained in the framework of the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) with some simple momentum transfer dependence. It is shown that both sets of the existing experimental data of the form factors, obtained by the Rosenbluth and polarization transfer, can be described by changing only the slope of the GPDs $E$. The description of neutron form factors is substantially better when the proton data obtained by the studies of polarization transfer are used.

Saturation effects in elastic scattering at the LHC

The problems linked to the extraction of the basic parameters of the hadron elastic scattering amplitude at the LHC are explored. The impact of the Black Disk Limit (BDL)$-$ which constitutes a new regime of the scattering processes - on the determination of these values is examined.

Unitarisation of the hard pomeron and black-disk limit at the LHC

Recent models of soft diffraction include a hard pomeron pole besides the usual soft term. Such models violate the black-disk limit around Tevatron energies, so that they need to be supplemented by a unitarisation scheme. Several such schemes are considered in this letter, where we show that they lead to a large uncertainty at the LHC. We also examine the impact of unitarisation on various small-t observables, the slope in t of the elastic cross section, or the ratio of the real to imaginary parts of the scattering amplitude, leading to the conclusion that the existence of a hard pomeron in soft scattering may be confirmed by LHC data.

Analytic properties of unitarization schemes

The analytic properties of the elastic hadron scattering amplitude are examined in the impact parameter representation at high energies. Different unitarization procedures and the corresponding non-linear equations are presented. Several unitarisation schemes are presented. They lead to almost identical results at the LHC.

Comparison of different non-linear equations and corresponding unitarization schemes

Different forms of non-linear equations which mimic parton saturation in the non-perturbative regime are examined. These equations lead to corresponding unitarization schemes in the impact parameter representation of the hadron scattering amplitude. It is shown how specific properties of the non-linear equations reflect different features of the diffraction processes.

Saturation effects in diffractive scattering at LHC energies

Unitarization schemes can be reduced to non-linear equations which saturate at small $b$ the evolution of the elastic amplitude with $s$, and which mimic parton saturation in the non-perturbative regime. These equations enable us to study the effect of saturation on total and elastic cross sections for various models, and to evaluate the uncertainties on $σ_{tot}$ and $ρ(s,t)$ at the LHC in the presence of a hard pomeron.

Is there exist a hadron spin-flip contribution in the Coulomb-hadron interference at small transfer momenta and high energies

The analysing power $A_N$ is examined in the range of the Coulomb-hadron interferenceon on the basis of the experimental data from p_L = 6 GeV/c up to 200 GeV/c taking account of a phenomenological analysis at p_L = 6 GeV/c and a dynamic high-energy spin model. The results are compared with the new RHIC data at p_L = 100 GeV/c. The new experimental data obtained at RHIC indicate the small contributions of the hadrons spin-flip amplitude.

A New Method for the Determination of the Real Part of the Hadron Elastic Scattering Amplitude at Small Angles and High Energies

A new method for the determination of the real part of the elastic scattering amplitude is examined for high energy proton-proton elastic scattering at small momentum transfer. This method allows us to decrease the number of model assumptions, to obtain the real part in a narrow region of momentum transfer and to test different models. The real part is computed at a given point t_min near t=0 from the known Coulomb amplitude. Hence one obtains an important constraint on the real part of the forward scattering amplitude and therefore on the rho-parameter (measuring the ratio of the real to imaginary part of the scattering amplitude at t=0), which can be tested at LHC.

Hard pomeron contribution to forward elastic scattering

The introduction of a hard singularity in fits to total cross sections and to the ratio of real to imaginary parts enables to reproduce perfectly the data for sqrt(s)< 100 GeV using only simple-pole parametrisations, both for the soft and for the hard pomerons.

Calculation of the real part of the nuclear amplitude at high s and small t from the Coulomb amplitude

A new method for the determination of the real part of the elastic scattering amplitude is examined for high energy proton-proton at small momentum transfer. This method allows us to decrease the number of model assumptions, to obtain the real part in a narrow region of momentum transfer and to test different models. The possible non-exponential behavior of the real part was found on the base of the analysis of the ISR experimental data.

Impact of saturation on spin effects in proton-proton scattering

For pomerons described by a sum of two simple-pole terms, a soft and a hard pomeron, the unitarity bounds from saturation in impact-parameter space are examined. We consider the effect of these bounds on observables linked with polarisation, such as the analyzing power in elastic proton-proton scattering, for LHC energies. We obtain the s and t dependence of the Coulomb-nuclear interference at small momentum transfer, and show that the effect of the hard pomeron may be observed at the LHC.

Saturation effects in pp scattering in the impact-parameter representation

The impact of unitarity is considered in different approaches to saturation in impact-parameter space. The energy and momentum-transfer dependence of the total and differential cross sections and of the ratio of the real to imaginary parts of the scattering amplitude are obtained in a model that includes soft and hard pomeron contributions, coupled to hadrons via the electromagnetic form factor. It is shown that the hard pomeron may significantly contribute to soft physics at the LHC. A similar conclusion can also be reached in the framework of non-linear approaches to unitarisation of the BFKL pomeron.

Large-distance effects on spin observables at RHIC

The impact of large-distance contributions on the behaviour of the slopes of the spin-non-flip and of the spin-flip amplitudes is analysed. It is shown that the long tail of the hadron potential in impact parameter space leads to a larger value of the slope for the spin-flip amplitude (without the kinematic factor sqrt(|t|)) than for the spin-non-flip amplitude. This effect is taken into account in the calculation of the analysing power in proton-nucleus reactions at high energies.

Saturation and non-linear effects in diffractive processes

Through a direct implementation of the saturation regime resulting from the unitarity limit in the impact parameter representation, we explore various possibilities for the energy dependence of hadronic scattering. We show that it is possible to obtain a good description of the scattering amplitude from a hard pomeron provided one includes non-linear effects.

Soft data and the hard pomeron

We show that the introduction of an additional, hard, singularity in soft forward amplitudes enables one to improve considerably the fits using a simple-pole structure for the soft pomeron.

The high-energy hadron spin-flip amplitude at small momentum transfer and new AN data from RHIC

In the case of elastic high-energy hadron-hadron scattering, the impact of the large-distance contributions on the behaviour of the slopes of the spin-non-flip and of the spin-flip amplitudes is analysed. It is shown that the long tail of the hadronic potential in impact parameter space leads to a value of the slope of the reduced spin-flip amplitude larger than that of the spin-non-flip amplitude. This effect is taken into account in the calculation of the analysing power in proton-nucleus reactions at high energies. It is shown that the preliminary measurement of AN obtained by the E950 Collaboration indeed favour a spin-flip-amplitude with a large slope. Predictions for AN at pL = 250 GeV/c are given.
