Tunable Magnetic Frustration in the Cu-Ru-based Double Perovskite La$_{2-x}$Sm$_x$CuRuO$_6$ (x = 0, 1, 2) Oxides

In this study, we investigate structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of the copper-ruthenate based oxide double perovskite La$_{2-x}$Sm$_x$CuRuO$_6$ (x = 0, 1, 2), synthesized through the solid-state reaction method. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that all compounds crystallize in a monoclinic symmetry, with varying degree of structural distortion that increases in moving from La$^{3+}$ to smaller size cation Sm$^{3+}$. Electrical resistivity studies indicate insulating behaviour in all compounds, with variable-range-hopping domination at low temperatures, due to presence of anti-site disorder. AC susceptibility and heat capacity measurements suggest suppression of frustration in Sm-bearing compounds, affecting the magnetic behavior. Our first-principles calculations suggest that the combined effects of lattice distortion and Sm magnetism play a crucial role in weakening magnetic frustration, thereby rationalizing the experimental observations. These findings shed light on the complex interplay of crystal structure and magnetism in Cu-Ru double perovskites, and open up an avenue for tuning of magnetic properties through rare-earth-ion substitution.

Comparative study of terbium tellurides Tb2Te5 and TbTe3

Two terbium tellurides, TbTe3 and Tb2Te5, were studied by means of thermodynamics, ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy and torque magnetometry. While crystal structure and some physical properties of TbTe3 were established previously, the crystal structure of Tb2Te5 was solved only in this work in the orthorhombic space group Cmcm with the parameters of unit cell a = 4.3120(5), b = 41.0305(76) and c = 4.2979(8) Å. In contrast to TbTe3, which experiences three successive magnetic phase transitions, Tb2Te5 orders antiferromagnetically in two steps at TN1 = 9.0 K and TN2 = 6.8 K, both readily suppressed by an external magnetic field. The third transition in TbTe3 is due to the interaction of the magnetic subsystem with the charge density waves. The interaction of magnetic and electronic subsystems in Tb2Te5 has been revealed by the pump probe. Torque measurements of TbTe3 show that the magnetic moments of Tb are oriented predominantly in the ac plane at high temperatures and switch to the b axis at low temperatures. In Tb2Te5, the magnetic moments of Tb are oriented predominantly in the ac plane at low temperatures.

High-pressure behavior of superconducting boron-doped diamond

This work investigates the high-pressure structure of freestanding superconducting ($T_{c}$ = 4.3\,K) boron doped diamond (BDD) and how it affects the electronic and vibrational properties using Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction in the 0-30\,GPa range. High-pressure Raman scattering experiments revealed an abrupt change in the linear pressure coefficients and the grain boundary components undergo an irreversible phase change at 14\,GPa. We show that the blue shift in the pressure-dependent vibrational modes correlates with the negative pressure coefficient of $T_{c}$ in BDD. The analysis of x-ray diffraction data determines the equation of state of the BDD film, revealing a high bulk modulus of $B_{0}$=510$\pm$28\,GPa. The comparative analysis of high-pressure data clarified that the sp$^{2}$ carbons in the grain boundaries transform into hexagonal diamond.

Magnetic properties of the low-dimensional spin-1/2 magnet α-Cu_2As_2O_7

In this work we study the interplay between the crystal structure and magnetism of the pyroarsenate α-Cu_2As_2O_7 by means of magnetization, heat capacity, electron spin resonance and nuclear magnetic resonance measurements as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculations and quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations. The data reveal that the magnetic Cu-O chains in the crystal structure represent a realization of a quasi-one dimensional (1D) coupled alternating spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain model with relevant pathways through non-magnetic AsO_4 tetrahedra. Owing to residual 3D interactions antiferromagnetic long range ordering at T_N\simeq10K takes place. Application of external magnetic field B along the magnetically easy axis induces the transition to a spin-flop phase at B_{SF}~1.7T (2K). The experimental data suggest that substantial quantum spin fluctuations take place at low magnetic fields in the ordered state. DFT calculations confirm the quasi-one-dimensional nature of the spin lattice, with the leading coupling J_1 within the structural dimers. QMC fits to the magnetic susceptibility evaluate J_1=164K, the weaker intrachain coupling J'_1/J_1 = 0.55, and the effective interchain coupling J_{ic1}/J_1 = 0.20.

The incarnation of the Nersesyan-Tsvelik model in (NO)[Cu(NO3)3]

The topology of the magnetic interactions of the copper spins in the nitrosonium nitratocuprate (NO)[Cu(NO3)3] suggests that it could be a realization of the Nersesyan-Tsvelik model, whose ground state was argued to be either a resonating valence bond (RVB) state or a valence bond crystal (VBC). The measurement of thermodynamic and resonant properties reveals a behavior inherent to low dimensional spin S = 1/2 systems and provides indeed no evidence for the formation of long-range magnetic order down to 1.8 K.

Quantum electric dipole glass and frustrated magnetism near a critical point in Li2ZrCuO4

We report a new peculiar effect of the interaction between a sublattice of frustrated quantum spin-1/2 chains and a sublattice of pseudospin-1/2 centers (quantum electric dipoles) uniquely co-existing in the complex oxide Li2ZrCuO4. 7Li nuclear magnetic-, Cu2+ electron spin resonance and a complex dielectric constant data reveal that the sublattice of Li+-derived electric dipoles orders glass like at Tg ~ 70 K yielding a spin site nonequivalency in the CuO2 chains. We suggest that such a remarkable interplay between electrical and spin degrees of freedom might strongly influence the properties of the spiral spin state in Li2ZrCuO4 that is close to a quantum ferromagnetic critical point. In particular that strong quantum fluctuations and/or the glassy behavior of electric dipoles might renormalize the exchange integrals affecting this way the pitch angle of the spiral as well as be responsible for the missing multiferroicity present in other helicoidal magnets.

The route of frustrated cuprates from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains: Li2ZrCuO4 as a missing link near the quantum critical point

From thermodynamics, LSDA+U calculations and exact diagonalization studies of a five-band Hubbard (Cu 3d, O 2p) model on CuO2 stripes we found that Li2ZrCuO4 (Li2CuZrO4 in traditional notation) is close to a ferromagnetic critical point. Analyzing its measured susceptibility chi(T) and specific heat cp(T,H) within a Heisenberg model, we show that the ratio of the 2nd to the 1st neighbor exchange integrals alpha=-J2/J1 of the order of 0.3, i.e. it is close to the critical value alpha_c=1/4. Comparing with related chain cuprates we explain the rather strong field dependence of cp, the monotonous down shift of the peak of chi(T), and its increase for alpha approaching 1/4 + 0.

Granular Rheology in Zero Gravity

We present an experimental investigation on the rheological behavior of model granular media made of nearly elastic spherical particles. The experiments are performed in a cylindrical Couette geometry and the experimental device is placed inside an airplane undergoing parabolic flights to cancel the effect of gravity. The corresponding curves, shear stress versus shear rate, are presented and a comparison with existing theories is proposed. The quadratic dependence on the shear rate is clearly shown and the behavior as a function of the solid volume fraction of particles exhibits a power law function. It is shown that theoretical predictions overestimate the experiments. We observe, at intermediate volume fractions, the formation of rings of particles regularly spaced along the height of the cell. The differences observed between experimental results and theoretical predictions are discussed and related to the structures formed in the granular medium submitted to the external shear.
