Passage-time statistics of superradiant light pulses from Bose-Einstein condensates

We discuss the passage-time statistics of superradiant light pulses generated during the scattering of laser light from an elongated atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. Focusing on the early-stage of the phenomenon, we analyze the corresponding probability distributions and their scaling behaviour with respect to the threshold photon number and the coupling strength. With respect to these parameters, we find quantities which only vary significantly during the transition between the Kapitza Dirac and the Bragg regimes. A possible connection of the present observations to Brownian motion is also discussed.

Early Stage of Superradiance from Bose-Einstein Condensates

We investigate the dynamics of matter and optical waves at the early stage of superradiant Rayleigh scattering from Bose-Einstein Condensates. Our analysis is within a spatially dependent quantum model which is capable of providing analytic solutions for the operators of interest. The predictions of the present model are compared to the predictions of a closely related mean field model, and we provide a procedure that allows one to calculate quantum expectation values by averaging over semiclassical solutions. The coherence properties of the outgoing scattered light are also analyzed, and it is shown that the corresponding correlation functions may provide detailed information about the internal dynamics of the system.

Correlated directional atomic clouds via four-heterowave mixing

We investigate the coherence properties of pairs of counter-propagating atomic clouds, produced in superradiant Rayleigh scattering off atomic condensates. It is shown that these clouds exhibit long-range spatial coherence and strong nonclassical density cross-correlations, which make this scheme a promising candidate for the production of highly directional nonclassically correlated atomic pulses.

Sequential superradiant scattering from atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

We theoretically discuss several aspects of sequential superradiant scattering from atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. Our treatment is based on the semiclassical description of the process in terms of the Maxwell-Schroedinger equations for the coupled matter-wave and optical fields. First, we investigate sequential scattering in the weak-pulse regime and work out the essential mechanisms responsible for bringing about the characteristic fan-shaped side-mode distribution patterns. Second, we discuss the transition between the Kapitza-Dirac and Bragg regimes of sequential scattering in the strong-pulse regime. Finally, we consider the situation where superradiance is initiated by coherently populating an atomic side mode through Bragg diffraction, as in studies of matter-wave amplification, and describe the effect on the sequential scattering process.

Condensation temperature of interacting Bose gases with and without disorder

The momentum-shell renormalization group (RG) is used to study the condensation of interacting Bose gases without and with disorder. First of all, for the homogeneous disorder-free Bose gas the interaction-induced shifts in the critical temperature and chemical potential are determined up to second order in the scattering length. The approach does not make use of dimensional reduction and is thus independent of previous derivations. Secondly, the RG is used together with the replica method to study the interacting Bose gas with delta-correlated disorder. The flow equations are derived and found to reduce, in the high-temperature limit, to the RG equations of the classical Landau-Ginzburg model with random-exchange defects. The random fixed point is used to calculate the condensation temperature under the combined influence of particle interactions and disorder.

Spatial effects in superradiant Rayleigh scattering from Bose-Einstein condensates

We present a detailed theoretical analysis of superradiant Rayleigh scattering from atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. A thorough investigation of the spatially resolved time-evolution of optical and matter-wave fields is performed in the framework of the semiclassical Maxwell-Schroedinger equations. Our theory is not only able to explain many of the known experimental observations, e.g., the behavior of the atomic side-mode distributions, but also provides further detailed insights into the coupled dynamics of optical and matter-wave fields. To work out the significance of propagation effects, we compare our results to other theoretical models in which these effects are neglected.

Dynamics of matter-wave and optical fields in superradiant scattering from Bose-Einstein condensates

We study superradiant scattering off Bose-Einstein condensates by solving the semiclassical Maxwell-Schroedinger equations describing the coupled dynamics of matter-wave and optical fields. Taking the spatial dependence of these fields along the condensate axis into account, we are able to reproduce and explain many of the characteristic features observed in the experiments of Inouye et al. [Science 285, 571 (1999)] and Schneble et al. [Science 300, 475 (2003)], such as the shape of the atomic side-mode distributions for forward and backward scattering, the spatial asymmetry between forward and backward side modes, and the depletion of the condensate center observed for forward scattering.

Nonperturbative Effects on T_c of Interacting Bose Gases in Power-Law Traps

The critical temperature T_c of an interacting Bose gas trapped in a general power-law potential V(x)=\sum_i U_i|x_i|^{p_i} is calculated with the help of variational perturbation theory. It is shown that the interaction-induced shift in T_c fulfills the relation (T_c-T_c^0)/T_c^0= D_1(eta)a + D'(eta)a^{2 eta}+ O(a^2) with T_c^0 the critical temperature of the trapped ideal gas, a the s-wave scattering length divided by the thermal wavelength at T_c, and eta=1/2+\sum_i 1/p_i the potential-shape parameter. The terms D_1(eta)a and D'(eta) a^{2 eta} describe the leading-order perturbative and nonperturbative contributions to the critical temperature, respectively. This result quantitatively shows how an increasingly inhomogeneous potential suppresses the influence of critical fluctuations. The appearance of the a^{2 eta} contribution is qualitatively explained in terms of the Ginzburg criterion.

The epsilon-expansion in the symmetry-broken phase of an interacting Bose gas at finite temperature

We discuss the application of the momentum-shell renormalization group method to the interacting homogeneous Bose gas in the symmetric and in the symmetry-broken phases. It is demonstrated that recently discussed discrepancies are artifacts of not taking proper care of infrared divergencies appearing at finite temperature. If these divergencies are taken into account and treated properly by means of the epsilon-expansion, the resulting renormalization group equations and the corresponding universal properties are identical in the symmetric and the symmetry-broken phases.

Thermodynamics of a trapped interacting Bose gas and the renormalization group

We apply perturbative renormalization group theory to the symmetric phase of a dilute interacting Bose gas which is trapped in a three-dimensional harmonic potential. Using Wilsonian energy-shell renormalization and the epsilon-expansion, we derive the flow equations for the system. We relate these equations to the flow for the homogeneous Bose gas. In the thermodynamic limit, we apply our results to study the transition temperature as a function of the scattering length. Our results compare well to previous studies of the problem.

Atom trapping and two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates in field-induced adiabatic potentials

We discuss a method to create two-dimensional traps as well as atomic shell, or bubble, states for a Bose-Einstein condensate initially prepared in a conventional magnetic trap. The scheme relies on the use of time-dependent, radio frequency-induced adiabatic potentials. These are shown to form a versatile and robust tool to generate novel trapping potentials. Our shell states take the form of thin, highly stable matter-wave bubbles and can serve as stepping-stones to prepare atoms in highly-excited trap eigenstates or to study `collapse and revival phenomena'. Their creation requires gravitational effects to be compensated by applying additional optical dipole potentials. However, in our scheme gravitation can also be exploited to provide a route to two-dimensional atom trapping. We demonstrate the loading process for such a trap and examine experimental conditions under which a 2D condensate may be prepared.

Magneto-optical control of bright atomic solitons

In previous work we showed that bright atomic solitons can arise in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates in the form of gap solitons even for repulsive many-body interactions. Here we further explore the properties of atomic gap solitons and show that their internal structure can be used to both excite them and control their center-of-mass motion using applied laser and magnetic fields. As an illustration we demonstrate a nonlinear atom-optical Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on gap solitons.

Time-dependent tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensates

The influence of atomic interactions on time-dependent tunneling processes of Bose-Einstein condensates is investigated. In a variety of contexts the relevant condensate dynamics can be described by a Landau-Zener equation modified by the appearance of nonlinear contributions. Based on this equation it is discussed how the interactions modify the tunneling probability. In particular, it is shown that for certain parameter values, due to a nonlinear hysteresis effect, complete adiabatic population transfer is impossible however slowly the resonance is crossed. The results also indicate that the interactions can cause significant increase as well as decrease of tunneling probabilities which should be observable in currently feasible experiments.

Semiclassical interferences and catastrophes in the ionization of Rydberg atoms by half-cycle pulses

A multi-dimensional semiclassical description of excitation of a Rydberg electron by half-cycle pulses is developed and applied to the study of energy- and angle-resolved ionization spectra. Characteristic novel phenomena observable in these spectra such as interference oscillations and semiclassical glory and rainbow scattering are discussed and related to the underlying classical dynamics of the Rydberg electron. Modifications to the predictions of the impulse approximation are examined that arise due to finite pulse durations.

Excitation of weakly bound Rydberg electrons by half-cycle pulses

The interaction of a weakly bound Rydberg electron with an electromagnetic half-cycle pulse (HCP) is described with the help of a multidimensional semiclassical treatment. This approach relates the quantum evolution of the electron to its underlying classical dynamics. The method is nonperturbative and is valid for arbitrary spatial and temporal shapes of the applied HCP. On the basis of this approach angle- and energy-resolved spectra resulting from the ionization of Rydberg atoms by HCPs are analyzed. The different types of spectra obtainable in the sudden-impact approximation are characterized in terms of the appearing semiclassical scattering phenomena. Typical modifications of the spectra originating from finite pulse effects are discussed.

Atom holography

We study the conditions under which atomic condensates can be used as a recording media and then suggest a reading scheme which allows to reconstruct an object with atomic reading beam. We show that good recording can be achieved for flat condensate profiles and for negative detunings between atomic Bohr frequency and optical field frequency. The resolution of recording dramatically depends on the relation between the healing length of the condensate and the spatial frequency contents of the optical fields involved.

Quantum optics of a Bose-Einstein condensate coupled to a quantized light field

We consider the interaction between a Bose-Einstein condensate and a single-mode quantized light field in the presence of a strong far off-resonant pump laser. The dynamics is characterized by an exponential instability, hence the system acts as an atom-photon parametric amplifier. Triggered by a small injected probe field, or simply by quantum noise, entangled atom-photon pairs are created which exhibit non-classical correlations similar to those seen between photons in the optical parametric amplifier. In addition, the quantum statistics of the matter and light fields depend strongly on the initial state which triggers the amplifier. Thus by preparing different initial states of the light field, one can generate matter waves in a variety of quantum states, demonstrating optical control over the quantum statistics of matter waves.

Two-atom dark states in electromagnetic cavities

The center-of-mass motion of two two-level atoms coupled to a single damped mode of an electromagnetic resonator is investigated. For the case of one atom being initially excited and the cavity mode in the vacuum state it is shown that the atomic time evolution is dominated by the appearance of dark states. These states, in which the initial excitation is stored in the internal atomic degrees of freedom and the atoms become quantum mechanically entangled, are almost immune against photon loss from the cavity. Various properties of the dark states within and beyond the Raman-Nath approximation of atom optics are worked out.
