Sum Rate Maximization for NOMA-Assisted Uplink Pinching-Antenna Systems

In this paper, we investigate an uplink communication scenario in which multiple users communicate with an access point (AP) employing non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). A pinching antenna, which can be activated at an arbitrary point along a dielectric waveguide, is deployed at the AP to dynamically reconfigure user channels. The objective is to maximize the system sum rate by jointly optimizing the pinching-antenna's position and the users' transmit powers. Two scenarios are considered: one without quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees, and the other with QoS guarantees. In the former case, users transmit at full power, and the antenna position is determined using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. In the latter, an alternating optimization approach is adopted, where a low-complexity solution is derived for power allocation, and a modified PSO algorithm is applied to optimize the antenna position. Numerical results show that the proposed pinching-antenna-assisted system significantly improves the sum rate compared to the conventional fixed-antenna architecture. Furthermore, the NOMA-based approach consistently outperforms its TDMA-based counterpart. Finally, the proposed PSO-based method achieves near-optimal performance, particularly when the QoS constraints are moderate.

Quantum-Driven State-Reduction for Reliable UAV Trajectory Optimization in Low-Altitude Networks

This letter introduces a Graph-Condensed Quantum-Inspired Placement (GC-QAP) framework for reliability-driven trajectory optimization in Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle (UAV) assisted low-altitude wireless networks. The dense waypoint graph is condensed using probabilistic quantum-annealing to preserve interference-aware centroids while reducing the control state space and maintaining link-quality. The resulting problem is formulated as a priority-aware Markov decision process and solved using epsilon-greedy off-policy Q-learning, considering UAV kinematic and flight corridor constraints. Unlike complex continuous-action reinforcement learning approaches, GC-QAP achieves stable convergence and low outage with substantially and lower computational cost compared to baseline schemes.

Empowering AI-Native 6G Wireless Networks with Quantum Federated Learning

AI-native 6G networks are envisioned to tightly embed artificial intelligence (AI) into the wireless ecosystem, enabling real-time, personalized, and privacy-preserving intelligence at the edge. A foundational pillar of this vision is federated learning (FL), which allows distributed model training across devices without sharing raw data. However, implementing classical FL methods faces several bottlenecks in heterogeneous dynamic wireless networks, including limited device compute capacity, unreliable connectivity, intermittent communications, and vulnerability to model security and data privacy breaches. This article investigates the integration of quantum federated learning (QFL) into AI-native 6G networks, forming a transformative paradigm capable of overcoming these challenges. By leveraging quantum techniques across computing, communication, and cryptography within FL workflows, QFL offers new capabilities along three key dimensions: (i) edge intelligence, (ii) network optimization, and (iii) security and privacy, which are studied in this work. We further present a case study demonstrating that a QFL framework employing the quantum approximate optimization algorithm outperforms classical methods in model convergence. We conclude the paper by identifying practical challenges facing QFL deployment, such as quantum state fragility, incompatibility with classical protocols, and hardware constraints, and then outline key research directions toward its scalable real-world adoption.

SC-GIR: Goal-oriented Semantic Communication via Invariant Representation Learning

Goal-oriented semantic communication (SC) aims to revolutionize communication systems by transmitting only task-essential information. However, current approaches face challenges such as joint training at transceivers, leading to redundant data exchange and reliance on labeled datasets, which limits their task-agnostic utility. To address these challenges, we propose a novel framework called Goal-oriented Invariant Representation-based SC (SC-GIR) for image transmission. Our framework leverages self-supervised learning to extract an invariant representation that encapsulates crucial information from the source data, independent of the specific downstream task. This compressed representation facilitates efficient communication while retaining key features for successful downstream task execution. Focusing on machine-to-machine tasks, we utilize covariance-based contrastive learning techniques to obtain a latent representation that is both meaningful and semantically dense. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme on downstream tasks, we apply it to various image datasets for lossy compression. The compressed representations are then used in a goal-oriented AI task. Extensive experiments on several datasets demonstrate that SC-GIR outperforms baseline schemes by nearly 10%,, and achieves over 85% classification accuracy for compressed data under different SNR conditions. These results underscore the effectiveness of the proposed framework in learning compact and informative latent representations.

Tri-Hybrid Beamforming for Radiation-Center Reconfigurable Antenna Array: Spectral Efficiency and Energy Efficiency

In this paper, we propose a tri-hybrid beamforming (THBF) architecture based on the radiation-center (RC) reconfigurable antenna array (RCRAA), including the digital beamforming, analog beamforming, and electromagnetic (EM) beamforming, where the EM beamformer design is modeled as RC selection. Aiming at spectral efficiency (SE) maximization subject to the hardware and power consumption constraints, we propose a tri-loop alternating optimization (TLAO) scheme for the THBF design, where the digital and analog beamformers are optimized based on the penalty dual decomposition in the inner and middle loops, and the RC selection is determined through the coordinate descent method in the outer loop. Aiming at energy-efficiency (EE) maximization, we develop a dual quadratic transform-based fractional programming (DQTFP) scheme, where the TLAO scheme is readily used for the THBF design. To reduce the computational complexity, we propose the Lagrange dual transform-based fractional programming (LDTFP) scheme, where each iteration has a closed-form solution. Simulation results demonstrate the great potential of the RCRAA in improving both SE and EE. Compared to the DQTFP scheme, the LDTFP scheme significantly reduces the computational complexity with only minor performance loss.

Pinching-Antenna System Design with LoS Blockage: Does In-Waveguide Attenuation Matter?

In the literature of pinching-antenna systems, in-waveguide attenuation is often neglected to simplify system design and enable more tractable analysis. However, its effect on overall system performance has received limited attention in the existing literature. While a recent study has shown that, in line-of-sight (LoS)-dominated environments, the data rate loss incurred by omitting in-waveguide attenuation is negligible when the communication area is not excessively large, its effect under more general conditions remains unclear. This work extends the analysis to more realistic scenarios involving arbitrary levels of LoS blockage. We begin by examining a single-user case and derive an explicit expression for the average data rate loss caused by neglecting in-waveguide attenuation. The results demonstrate that, even for large service areas, the rate loss remains negligible under typical LoS blockage conditions. We then consider a more general multi-user scenario, where multiple pinching antennas, each deployed on a separate waveguide, jointly serve multiple users. The objective is to maximize the average sum rate by jointly optimize antenna positions and transmit beamformers to maximize the average sum rate under probabilistic LoS blockage. To solve the resulting stochastic and nonconvex optimization problem, we propose a dynamic sample average approximation (SAA) algorithm. At each iteration, this method replaces the expected objective with an empirical average computed from dynamically regenerated random channel realizations, ensuring that the optimization accurately reflects the current antenna configuration. Extensive simulation results are provided to the proposed algorithm and demonstrate the substantial performance gains of pinching-antenna systems, particularly in environments with significant LoS blockage.

Deep Learning Based Joint Channel Estimation and Positioning for Sparse XL-MIMO OFDM Systems

This paper investigates joint channel estimation and positioning in near-field sparse extra-large multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. To achieve cooperative gains between channel estimation and positioning, we propose a deep learning-based two-stage framework comprising positioning and channel estimation. In the positioning stage, the user's coordinates are predicted and utilized in the channel estimation stage, thereby enhancing the accuracy of channel estimation. Within this framework, we propose a U-shaped Mamba architecture for channel estimation and positioning, termed as CP-Mamba. This network integrates the strengths of the Mamba model with the structural advantages of U-shaped convolutional networks, enabling effective capture of local spatial features and long-range temporal dependencies of the channel. Numerical simulation results demonstrate that the proposed two-stage approach with CP-Mamba architecture outperforms existing baseline methods. Moreover, sparse arrays (SA) exhibit significantly superior performance in both channel estimation and positioning accuracy compared to conventional compact arrays.

Resource Allocation for Pinching-Antenna Systems: State-of-the-Art, Key Techniques and Open Issues

Pinching antennas have emerged as a promising technology for reconfiguring wireless propagation environments, particularly in high-frequency communication systems operating in the millimeter-wave and terahertz bands. By enabling dynamic activation at arbitrary positions along a dielectric waveguide, pinching antennas offer unprecedented channel reconfigurability and the ability to provide line-of-sight (LoS) links in scenarios with severe LoS blockages. The performance of pinching-antenna systems is highly dependent on the optimized placement of the pinching antennas, which must be jointly considered with traditional resource allocation (RA) variables -- including transmission power, time slots, and subcarriers. The resulting joint RA problems are typically non-convex with complex variable coupling, necessitating sophisticated optimization techniques. This article provides a comprehensive survey of existing RA algorithms designed for pinching-antenna systems, supported by numerical case studies that demonstrate their potential performance gains. Key challenges and open research problems are also identified to guide future developments in this emerging field.

Multi-Waveguide Pinching Antennas for ISAC

Recently, a novel flexible-antenna technology, called pinching antennas, has attracted growing academic interest. By inserting discrete dielectric materials, pinching antennas can be activated at arbitrary points along waveguides, allowing for flexible customization of large-scale path loss. This paper investigates a multi-waveguide pinching-antenna integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) system, where transmit pinching antennas (TPAs) and receive pinching antennas (RPAs) coordinate to simultaneously detect one potential target and serve one downlink user. We formulate a communication rate maximization problem subject to radar signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) requirement, transmit power budget, and the allowable movement region of the TPAs, by jointly optimizing TPA locations and transmit beamforming design. To address the non-convexity of the problem, we propose a novel fine-tuning approximation method to reformulate it into a tractable form, followed by a successive convex approximation (SCA)-based algorithm to obtain the solution efficiently. Extensive simulations validate both the system design and the proposed algorithm. Results show that the proposed method achieves near-optimal performance compared with the computational-intensive exhaustive search-based benchmark, and pinching-antenna ISAC systems exhibit a distinct communication-sensing trade-off compared with conventional systems.

Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation for NOMA-Assisted Uplink Pinching-Antenna Systems

The pinching-antenna architecture has emerged as a promising solution for reconfiguring wireless propagation environments and enhancing system performance. While prior research has primarily focused on sum-rate maximization or transmit power minimization of pinching-antenna systems, the critical aspect of energy efficiency (EE) has received limited attention. Given the increasing importance of EE in future wireless communication networks, this work investigates EE optimization in a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-assisted multi-user pinching-antenna uplink system. The problem entails the joint optimization of the users' transmit power and the pinching-antenna position. The resulting optimization problem is non-convex due to tightly coupled variables. To tackle this, we employ an alternating optimization framework to decompose the original problem into two subproblems: one focusing on power allocation and the other on antenna positioning. A low-complexity optimal solution is derived for the power allocation subproblem, while the pinching-antenna positioning subproblem is addressed using a particle swarm optimization algorithm to obtain a high-quality near-optimal solution. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme significantly outperforms both conventional-antenna configurations and orthogonal multiple access-based pinching-antenna systems in terms of EE.

Underwater Multi-Wavelength Optical Links With Blue Targets and Constraints: Opportunities and Challenges

Underwater optical wireless technologies offer multiple advantages over the acoustic technology. Acoustic signals, for instance, are susceptible to noise from marine sources due to marine life and human activities. This is not the case with optical signals. However, absorption and scattering significantly attenuate optical signals. This limits the communication range and requires higher transmission power or more sensitive receivers to detect transmitted light. Therefore, it is necessary to design underwater optical systems with a higher transmission rate and reduced attenuation. To this end, we introduce a framework for designing optical signaling constellations employing multi-wavelength light sources to account for the transmission distance and achievable rate. In particular, we redefine the color-shift keying (CSK) constraint region to target blue light and adapt to marine environments. We discuss an example of 4-point underwater CSK. The corresponding analytical results demonstrate the trade-offs between the symbol error probability, achievable rate, and transmission range of the proposed scheme.

Channel Estimation and Hybrid Precoding for Massive MIMO-OTFS System With Doubly Squint

Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation and massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) are promising technologies for next generation wireless communication systems for their abilities to counteract the issue of high mobility with large Doppler spread and mitigate the channel path attenuation, respectively. The natural integration of massive MIMO with OTFS in millimeter-wave systems can improve communication data rate and enhance the spectral efficiency. However, when transmitting wideband signals with large-scale arrays, the beam squint effect may occur, causing discrepancies in beam directions across subcarriers in multi-carrier systems. Moreover, the high-mobility wideband millimeter wave communications can induce the Doppler squint effect, leading to different Doppler shifts among the subcarriers. Both beam squint effect and Doppler squint effect (denoted as doubly squint effect) can degrade communication performance significantly. In this paper, we present an efficient channel estimation and hybrid precoding scheme to address the doubly squint effect in massive MIMO-OTFS systems. We first characterize the wideband channel model and the input-output relationship for massive MIMO-OTFS transmission considering doubly squint effect. We then mathematically derive the impact of channel parameters on chirp pilots under the doubly squint effect. Additionally, we develop a peak-index-based channel estimation scheme. By leveraging the results from channel estimation, we propose a hybrid precoding method to mitigate the doubly squint effect in downlink transmission scenarios. Finally, simulation results validate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme and show its superiority over the existing schemes.
