Applied foliated conformal Carroll symmetries

We apply the conformal compensating technique for constructing matter couplings to conformal scalars on a $D$-dimensional foliated conformal Carroll manifold dividing the tangent space into $(p+1)$-dimensional longitudinal and $(D-p-1)$-dimensional transversal directions corresponding to $p$-branes. We show that the conformal Carroll algebra that was used for particle-like foliated geometries with $p=0$ cannot be used for higher-dimensional objects, called $p$-branes, with $0 < p \le D-2$. Furthermore, string-like foliated geometries are not suitable for the conformal compensating technique due to the conformal invariance in the longitudinal directions that is present for $p=1$. All other cases can be dealt with provided one uses a different conformal extension of the Carroll algebra that amounts to a conformal extension in the longitudinal directions only supplemented with an additional an-isotropic dilatation. By brane-duality similar results hold for foliated Galilean geometries which we present as well. Our results nicely fit in with recent work on foliated Aristotelian geometries.

A Conformal Approach to Carroll Gravity

We show how to take the first step in the conformal program for constructing general matter couplings to Carroll gravity. In particular, we couple a single massless electric/magnetic scalar to conformal Carroll gravity with isotropic dilatations and show how, upon gauge-fixing, we obtain a (non-conformal version of) electric/magnetic Carroll gravity. We determine the full Carroll transformation rules paying special attention to the way the so-called intrinsic torsion tensors occur in these transformation rules. A noteworthy feature in the magnetic case is that the Lagrange multiplier present in the Lagrangian gets absorbed, after coupling to conformal Carroll gravity and gauge-fixing, into one of the independent spin-connections of magnetic Carroll gravity. Our results form a convenient starting point for constructing general matter couplings to Carroll gravity. Surprisingly, we find that the same relation between dynamical matter and gravity, which forms the basis of the conformal program, does not work in the usual way in the Galilei case.

Neutron stars in 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

Since the derivation of a well-defined $D\to4$ limit for 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (4DEGB) gravity coupled to a scalar field, there has been considerable interest in testing it as an alternative to Einstein's general theory of relativity. Past work has shown that this theory hosts interesting compact star solutions which are smaller in radius than a Schwarzschild black hole of the same mass in general relativity (GR), though the stability of such objects has been subject to question. In this paper we solve the equations for radial perturbations of neutron stars in the 4DEGB theory with Skyrme Lyon (SLy)/Brussels-Montreal Skyrme functionals (BSk) class equations of state (EOSs), along with the M\"uller-Serot (MS2) EOS, and show that the coincidence of stability and maximum mass points in GR is still present in this modified theory, with the interesting additional feature of solutions re-approaching stability near the black hole solution on the mass-radius diagram. Besides this, as expected from past work, we find that larger values of the 4DEGB coupling $\alpha$ tend to increase the mass of neutron stars of the same radius (due to a larger $\alpha$ weakening gravity) and move the maximum mass points of the solution branches closer to the black hole horizon.

Hietarinta Chern-Simons supergravity and its asymptotic structure

In this paper we present the Hietarinta Chern-Simons supergravity theory in three space-time dimensions which extends the simplest Poincar\'e supergravity theory. After approaching the construction of the action using the Chern-Simons formalism, the analysis of the corresponding asymptotic symmetry algebra is considered. For this purpose, we first propose a consistent set of asymptotic boundary conditions for the aforementioned supergravity theory whose underlying symmetry corresponds to the supersymmetric extension of the Hietarinta algebra. We then show that the corresponding charge algebra contains the super-$\mathfrak{bms}_{3}$ algebra as subalgebra, and has three independent central charges. We also show that the obtained asymptotic symmetry algebra can alternatively be recovered as a vanishing cosmological constant limit of three copies of the Virasoro algebra, one of which is augmented by supersymmetry.

Scalar correlators and normal modes in holographic neutron stars

We study a scalar field in the background of a holographic neutron star at finite temperature and analyze its asymptotic behavior to compute the two-point correlator at the boundary. From the normal modes of the field we determine the resonances and decay constants of the boundary field theory. We show that the correlator is dominated by the normal modes in the stable regions of phase space of the neutron star, becoming a power law as we move into the unstable zones.

Slowly rotating black holes in Quasi-topological gravity

While cubic Quasi-topological gravity is unique, there is a family of quartic Quasi-topological gravities in five dimensions. These theories are defined by leading to a first order equation on spherically symmetric spacetimes, resembling the structure of the equations of Lovelock theories in higher-dimensions, and are also ghost free around AdS. Here we construct slowly rotating black holes in these theories, and show that the equations for the off-diagonal components of the metric in the cubic theory are automatically of second order, while imposing this as a restriction on the quartic theories allows to partially remove the degeneracy of these theories, leading to a three-parameter family of Lagrangians of order four in the Riemann tensor. This shows that the parallel with Lovelock theory observed on spherical symmetry, extends to the realm of slowly rotating solutions. In the quartic case, the equations for the slowly rotating black hole are obtained from a consistent, reduced action principle. These functions admit a simple integration in terms of quadratures. Finally, in order to go beyond the slowly rotating regime, we explore the consistency of the Kerr-Schild ansatz in cubic Quasi-topological gravity. Requiring the spacetime to asymptotically match with the rotating black hole in GR, for equal oblateness parameters, the Kerr-Schild deformation of an AdS vacuum, does not lead to a solution for generic values of the coupling. This result suggests that in order to have solutions with finite rotation in Quasi-topological gravity, one must go beyond the Kerr-Schild ansatz.

On the supersymmetric extension of asymptotic symmetries in three spacetime dimensions

In this work we obtain known and new supersymmetric extensions of diverse asymptotic symmetries defined in three spacetime dimensions by considering the semigroup expansion method. The super-$BMS_3$, the superconformal algebra and new infinite-dimensional superalgebras are obtained by expanding the super-Virasoro algebra. The new superalgebras obtained are supersymmetric extensions of the asymptotic algebras of the Maxwell and the $\mathfrak{so}(2,2)\oplus\mathfrak{so}(2,1)$ gravity theories. We extend our results to the $\mathcal{N}=2$ and $\mathcal{N}=4$ cases and find that R-symmetry generators are required. We also show that the new infinite-dimensional structures are related through a flat limit $\ell \rightarrow \infty$.

Three-dimensional Poincaré supergravity and $\mathcal{N}$-extended supersymmetric BMS$_{3}$ algebra

A new approach for obtaining the three-dimensional Chern-Simons supergravity for the Poincaré algebra is presented. The $\mathcal{N}$-extended Poincaré supergravity is obtained by expanding the super Lorentz theory. We extend our procedure to their respective asymptotic symmetries and show that the $\mathcal{N}=(1,2,4)$ super-BMS$_{3}$ appear as expansions of one Virasoro superalgebra. Interestingly, the $\mathcal{N}$-extended super-BMS$_{3}$ obtained here are not only centrally extended but also endowed with internal symmetry. We also show that the $\mathcal{N}$-extended super Poincaré algebras with both central and automorphism generators are finite subalgebras.

Scalar field quasinormal modes on asymptotically locally flat rotating black holes in three dimensions

The pure quadratic term of New Massive Gravity in three dimensions admits asymptotically locally flat, rotating black holes. These black holes are characterized by their mass and angular momentum, as well as by a hair of gravitational origin. As in the Myers-Perry solution in dimensions greater than five, there is no upper bound on the angular momentum. We show that, remarkably, the equation for a massless scalar field on this background can be solved in an analytic manner and that the quasinormal frequencies can be found in a closed form. The spectrum is obtained requiring ingoing boundary conditions at the horizon and an asymptotic behavior at spatial infinity that provides a well-defined action principle for the scalar probe. As the angular momentum of the black hole approaches zero, the imaginary part of the quasinormal frequencies tends to minus infinity, migrating to the north pole of the Riemann Sphere and providing infinitely damped modes of high frequency. We show that this is consistent with the fact that the static black hole within this family does not admit quasinormal modes for a massless scalar probe.

Scalar probes on wormholes in Lovelock theories with unique vacuum

In this paper we present a new family of wormhole geometries in Lovelock theories with a unique vacuum, and study their stability under scalar field perturbations. As the solutions already known in the literature for Chern-Simons gravity on AdS, the new wormholes are characterized by a single integration constant $\rho_{0}$, that parameterizes the contribution to the mass coming from each boundary, which cancel each other, leading to a new example of "mass without mass". The stability of these new configurations, as well as other previously constructed in the literature is explored under scalar field perturbations. The stability is ensured provided the mass of the scalar perturbation is above a deformed Breitenlohner-Freedman bound which is sensitive to the value of $\rho_{0}$.

Generalized Chern-Simons higher-spin gravity theories in three dimensions

The coupling of spin-3 gauge fields to three-dimensional Maxwell and $AdS$-Lorentz gravity theories is presented. After showing how the usual spin-3 extensions of the $AdS$ and the Poincaré algebras in three dimensions can be obtained as expansions of $\mathfrak{sl}\left( 3,\mathbb{R}\right)$ algebra, the procedure is generalized so as to define new higher-spin symmetries. Remarkably, the spin-3 extension of the Maxwell symmetry allows one to introduce a novel gravity model coupled to higher-spin topological matter with vanishing cosmological constant, which in turn corresponds to a flat limit of the $AdS$-Lorentz case. We extend our results to define two different families of higher-spin extensions of three-dimensional Einstein gravity.

Superradiance of charged black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity

In this paper we show that electrically charged black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity suffer from a superradiant instability. It is triggered by a charged scalar field that fulfills Dirichlet boundary conditions at a mirror located outside the horizon. As in General Relativity, the unstable modes exist provided the mirror is located beyond a critical radius, making the instability a long wavelength one. We explore the effects of the Gauss-Bonnet corrections on the critical radius and find evidence that the critical radius decreases as the Gauss-Bonnet coupling $α$ increases. Due to the, up to date, lack of an analytic rotating solution for Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory, this is the first example of a superradiant instability in the presence of higher curvature terms in the action.

Black holes in quasi-topological gravity and conformal couplings

Lovelock theory of gravity provides a tractable model to investigate the effects of higher-curvature terms in the context of AdS/CFT. Yielding second order, ghost-free field equations, this theory represents a minimal setup in which higher-order gravitational couplings in asymptotically Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spaces, including black holes, can be solved analytically. This however has an obvious limitation as in dimensions lower than seven, the contribution from cubic or higher curvature terms is merely topological. Therefore, in order to go beyond quadratic order and study higher terms in AdS_5 analytically, one is compelled to look for other toy models. One such model is the so-called quasi-topological gravity, which, despite being a higher-derivative theory, provides a tractable setup with R^3 and R^4 terms. In this paper, we investigate AdS_5 black holes in quasi-topological gravity. We consider the theory conformally coupled to matter and in presence of Abelian gauge fields. We show that charged black holes in AdS_5 which, in addition, exhibit a backreaction of the matter fields on the geometry can be found explicitly in this theory. These solutions generalize the black hole solution of quasi-topological gravity and exist in a region of the parameter spaces consistent with the constraints coming from causality and other consistency conditions. They have finite conserved charges and exhibit non-trivial thermodynamical properties.

A generalized action for $\left( 2 + 1 \right)$-dimensional Chern--Simons gravity

We show that the so-called semi-simple extended Poincaré (SSEP) algebra in $D$ dimensions can be obtained from the anti-de~Sitter algebra $\mathfrak{so} \left( D-1,2 \right)$ by means of the $S$-expansion procedure with an appropriate semigroup $S$. A general prescription is given for computing Casimir operators for $S$-expanded algebras, and the method is exemplified for the SSEP algebra. The $S$-expansion method also allows us to extract the corresponding invariant tensor for the SSEP algebra, which is a key ingredient in the construction of a generalized action for Chern--Simons gravity in $2+1$ dimensions.
