Relative tilting theory in abelian categories II: $n$-$\mathcal{X}$-tilting theory

We introduce a relative tilting theory in abelian categories and show that this work offers a unified framework of different previous notions of tilting, ranging from Auslander-Solberg relative tilting modules on Artin algebras to infinitely generated tilting modules on arbitrary rings. Furthermore, we see that it presents a tool for developing new tilting theories in categories that can be embedded nicely in an abelian category. In particular, we will show how the tilting theory in exact categories built this way, coincides with tilting objects in extriangulated categories introduced recently. We will review Bazzoni\textquoteright s tilting characterization, the relative homological dimensions on the induced tilting classes and parametrise certain cotorsion-like pairs by using $n$-$\mathcal{X}$-tilting classes. As an application, we show how to construct relative tilting classes and cotorsion pairs in $\operatorname{Rep}(Q,\mathcal{C})$ (the category of representations of a quiver $Q$ in an abelian category $\mathcal{C}$) from tilting classes in $\mathcal{C},$ where $Q$ is finite-cone-shape.

Frobenius pairs in abelian categories: correspondences with cotorsion pairs, exact model categories, and Auslander-Buchweitz contexts

In this work, we revisit Auslander-Buchweitz Approximation Theory and find some relations with cotorsion pairs and model category structures. From the notions of relatives generators and cogenerators in Approximation Theory, we introduce the concept of left Frobenius pairs $(\mathcal{X},ω)$ in an abelian category $\mathcal{C}$. We show how to construct from $(\mathcal{X},ω)$ a projective exact model structure on $\mathcal{X}^\wedge$, as a result of Hovey-Gillespie Correspondence applied to two compatible and complete cotorsion pairs in $\mathcal{X}^\wedge$. These pairs can be regarded as examples of what we call cotorsion pairs relative to a thick subcategory of $\mathcal{C}$. We establish some correspondences between Frobenius pairs, relative cotorsion pairs, exact model structures and Auslander-Buchweitz contexts. Finally, some applications of these results are given in the context of Gorenstein homological algebra by generalizing some existing model structures on the categories of modules over Gorenstein and Ding-Chen rings, and by encoding the stable module category of a ring as a certain homotopy category. We also present some connections with perfect cotorsion pairs, covering classes, and cotilting modules.

Homological Dimensions in Cotorsion Pairs

Two classes $\mathcal A$ and $\mathcal B$ of modules over a ring $R$ are said to form a cotorsion pair $(\mathcal A, \mathcal B)$ if $\mathcal A={\rm Ker Ext}^1_R(-,\mathcal B)$ and $\mathcal B={\rm Ker Ext}^1_R(\mathcal A,-)$. We investigate relative homological dimensions in cotorsion pairs. This can be applied to study the big and the little finitistic dimension of $R$. We show that $\Findim R<\infty$ if and only if the following dimensions are finite for some cotorsion pair $(\mathcal A, \mathcal B)$ in $\mathrm{Mod} R$: the relative projective dimension of $\A$ with respect to itself, and the $\mathcal A$-resolution dimension of the category $\mathcal P$ of all $R$-modules of finite projective dimension. Moreover, we obtain an analogous result for $\findim R$, and we characterize when $\Findim R=\findim R.$
