Superoscillations underlying remote state preparation for relativistic fields

We present a physical (gedanken) implementation of a generalized remote state preparation of relativistic quantum field states for an arbitrary set of observers. The prepared states are created in regions that are outside the future light-cone of the generating region. The mechanism, which is based on utilizing the vacuum state of a relativistic quantum field as a resource, sheds light on the well known Reeh-Schlieder theorem, indicating its strong connection with the mathematical phenomenon of superoscillations.

Process Tomography for Systems in a Thermal State

We propose a new method for implementing process tomography that is based on the information extracted from temporal correlations between observables, rather than on state preparation and state tomography. As such, the approach is applicable to systems that are in a mixed state, and in particular to thermal states. We illustrate the method for an arbitrary evolution described by Kraus operators, as well as for simpler cases such as a general Gaussian channels, and qubit dynamics.

Novel Mechanisms for repulsive Casimir forces

We present two novel models for repulsive Casimir interaction between positive perturbations. One example relies on non locality of the dielectric response and one relies on interference between (attractive) modes. Such examples are impossible to achieve in 1d massless theories, as they are prohibited by a generalization of the result of Lambrecht, Jaekel and Reynaud [Phys.Lett. A 225 (1997)] to non local dielectrics and to negative perturbations

Casimir forces in a T operator approach

We explore the scattering approach to Casimir forces. Our main tool is the description of Casimir energy in terms of transition operators, as presented in Kenneth and Klich, Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 160401 (2006). We study the convergence properties of the formula and how to utilize it, together with scattering data to compute the force. We illustrate the approach by describing the force between scatterers in 1d and 3d,, and in particular show how it may be applied in order to study the interaction between two spherical bodies at all distances.

Surface tank-treading: propulsion of Purcell's toroidal swimmer

In this work we address the "smoking ring" propulsion technique, originally proposed by E. M. Purcell. We first consider self-locomotion of a doughnut-shaped swimmer powered by surface tank-treading. Different modes of surface motion are assumed and propulsion velocity and swimming efficiency are determined. The swimmer is propelled against the direction of its outer surface motion, the inner surface having very little affect. The simplest swimming mode corresponding to constant angular velocity, can achieve propulsion speeds of up to 66% of the surface tank-treading velocity and swimming efficiency of up to 13%. Higher efficiency is possible for more complicated modes powered by twirling of extensible surface. A potential practical design of a swimmer motivated by Purcell's idea is proposed and demonstrated numerically. Lastly, the explicit solution is found for a two-dimensional swimmer composed of two counter-rotating disks, using complex variable techniques.

A frictionless microswimmer

We investigate the self-locomotion of an elongated microswimmer by virtue of the unidirectional tangential surface treadmilling. We show that the propulsion could be almost frictionless, as the microswimmer is propelled forward with the speed of the backward surface motion, i.e. it moves throughout an almost quiescent fluid. We investigate this swimming technique using the special spheroidal coordinates and also find an explicit closed-form optimal solution for a two-dimensional treadmiler via complex-variable techniques.

Opposites Attract - A Theorem About The Casimir Force

We consider the Casimir interaction between (non-magnetic) dielectric bodies or conductors. Our main result is a proof that the Casimir force between two bodies related by reflection is always attractive, independent of the exact form of the bodies or dielectric properties. Apart from being a fundamental property of fields, the theorem and its corollaries also rule out a class of suggestions to obtain repulsive forces, such as the two hemisphere repulsion suggestion and its relatives.

A New Variant of the Casimir Effect and Its Exact Evaluation

A new version of the Casimir effect where the two plates conduct in specific, different, directions is considered. By direct functional integration the evaluation of the Casimir energy as a function of the angle between the conduction directions is reduced to quadratures. Other applications of the method and a magnetic Casimir variant are mentioned.
