Some Exact Results in Chiral Gauge Theories

We analyze dynamics of chiral gauge theories based on the $SU(N)$ gauge group with one anti-symmetric tensor $A$ and $(N-4)$ anti-fundamentals $F_{i}$ when $N$ is odd. Based on the continuity to the supersymmetric gauge theories with anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking, we claim that the global $SU(N-4)$ symmetry is spontaneously broken to $Sp(N-5)$. There are $N-5$ massless fermions as a fundamental representation of $Sp(N-5)$, and another massless fermion, together saturating the anomaly matching conditions. When $N$ is even, the unbroken flavor symmetry is $Sp(N-4)$ while there are no massless fermions. Our result is different from the dynamics suggested by tumbling where the full $SU(N-4)$ symmetry is unbroken, but the tumbling picture can be modified via the addition of a second condensate to produce the symmetry breaking pattern predicted from our method.

More Exact Results on Chiral Gauge Theories: the Case of the Symmetric Tensor

We study dynanics of $SU(N-4)$ gauge theories with fermions in rank-2 symmetric tensor and $N$ anti-fundamental representations, by perturbing supersymmetric theories with anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking. We find the $SU(N)\times U(1)$ global symmetry is dynamically broken to $SO(N)$ for $N\geq 17$, a different result from conjectures in the literature. For $N<17$, theories flow to infrared fixed points.

Scattering Amplitudes for Monopoles: Pairwise Little Group and Pairwise Helicity

On-shell methods are particularly suited for exploring the scattering of electrically and magnetically charged objects, for which there is no local and Lorentz invariant Lagrangian description. In this paper we show how to construct a Lorentz-invariant S-matrix for the scattering of electrically and magnetically charged particles, without ever having to refer to a Dirac string. A key ingredient is a revision of our fundamental understanding of multi-particle representations of the Poincaré group. Surprisingly, the asymptotic states for electric-magnetic scattering transform with an additional little group phase, associated with pairs of electrically and magnetically charged particles. The corresponding "pairwise helicity" is identified with the quantized "cross product" of charges, $e_1 g_2 - e_2 g_1$, for every charge-monopole pair, and represents the extra angular momentum stored in the asymptotic electromagnetic field. We define a new kind of pairwise spinor-helicity variable, which serves as an additional building block for electric-magnetic scattering amplitudes. We then construct the most general 3-point S-matrix elements, as well as the full partial wave decomposition for the $2\to 2$ fermion-monopole S-matrix. In particular, we derive the famous helicity flip in the lowest partial wave as a simple consequence of a generalized spin-helicity selection rule, as well as the full angular dependence for the higher partial waves. Our construction provides a significant new achievement for the on-shell program, succeeding where the Lagrangian description has so far failed.

Self Destructing Atomic DM

Self-Destructing Dark Matter (SDDM) is a class of dark sector models in which the collision of a dark sector particle with the earth induces its prompt decay into Standard Model particles, generating unique signals at neutrino detectors. The inherent fragility of SDDM makes its survival from the early universe unlikely, implying a late time production mechanism. We present an efficient late time production mechanism for SDDM based on atomic rearrangement, the mechanism responsible for muon or anti-proton capture in hydrogen. In this model, an atomic rearrangement process occurs in our galaxy, converting dark atoms into highly excited bound states - our SDDM candidates. While the resulting SDDM is only a small fraction of the dark matter flux, its striking self-destruction signals imply a significant discovery reach in the existing data from the Super-Kamiokande experiment.

Continuum Naturalness

We present a novel class of composite Higgs models in which the top and gauge partners responsible for cutting off the Higgs quadratic divergences form a continuum. The continuum states are characterized by their spectral densities, which should have a finite gap for realistic models. We present a concrete example based on a warped extra dimension with a linear dilaton, where this finite gap appears naturally. We derive the spectral densities in this model and calculate the full Higgs potential for a phenomenologically viable benchmark point, with percent level tuning. The continuum top and gauge partners in this model evade all resonance searches at the LHC and yield qualitatively different collider signals.

TASI Lectures on Non-Supersymmetric BSM Models

These lectures provide a self-contained introduction to the essential aspects of non-supersymmetric beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics for beginning graduate students who are already familiar with quantum field theory. After a detailed review of the physical meaning of the hierarchy problem, we introduce the key ingredients of the physics of Goldstone bosons necessary for many non-supersymmetric new physics models. Next we discuss the concept of collective symmetry breaking and present the main elements leading to little Higgs/composite Higgs models. We then turn to extra dimensional theories. After covering some of the basics of extra dimensional physics, we describe warped extra dimensions and explain how the AdS/CFT correspondence leads to realistic RS models and the holographic minimal composite Higgs model.

Dark quarkonium formation in the early universe

The relic abundance of heavy stable particles charged under a confining gauge group can be depleted by a second stage of annihilations near the deconfinement temperature. This proceeds via the formation of quarkonia-like states, in which the heavy pair subsequently annihilates. The size of the quarkonium formation cross section was the subject of some debate. We estimate this cross section in a simple toy model. The dominant process can be viewed as a rearrangement of the heavy and light quarks, leading to a geometric cross section of hadronic size. In contrast, processes in which only the heavy constituents are involved lead to mass-suppressed cross sections. These results apply to any scenario with bound states of sizes much larger than their inverse mass, such as U(1) models with charged particles of different masses, and can be used to construct ultra-heavy dark-matter models with masses above the naïve unitarity bound. They are also relevant for the cosmology of any stable colored relic.

Self-Destructing Dark Matter

We present Self-Destructing Dark Matter (SDDM), a new class of dark matter models which are detectable in large neutrino detectors. In this class of models, a component of dark matter can transition from a long-lived state to a short-lived one by scattering off of a nucleus or an electron in the Earth. The short-lived state then decays to Standard Model particles, generating a dark matter signal with a visible energy of order the dark matter mass rather than just its recoil. This leads to striking signals in large detectors with high energy thresholds. We present a few examples of models which exhibit self destruction, all inspired by bound state dynamics in the Standard Model. The models under consideration exhibit a rich phenomenology, possibly featuring events with one, two, or even three lepton pairs, each with a fixed invariant mass and a fixed energy, as well as non-trivial directional distributions. This motivates dedicated searches for dark matter in large underground detectors such as Super-K, Borexino, SNO+, and DUNE.

Tree-level Quartic for a Holographic Composite Higgs

We present a new class of composite Higgs models where an adjustable tree-level Higgs quartic coupling allows for a significant reduction in the tuning of the Higgs potential. Our 5D warped space implementation is the first example of a holographic composite Higgs model with a tree-level quartic. It is inspired by a 6D model where the quartic originates from the Tr [A_5,A_6]^2 term of the gauge field strength, the same model that led to the original little Higgs construction of Arkani-Hamed, Cohen, and Georgi. Beyond the reduction of the tuning and the standard composite Higgs signatures, the model predicts a doubling of the KK states with relatively small splittings as well as a Higgs sector with two doublets in the decoupling limit.

The Flavor of the Composite Twin Higgs

The assumption of anarchic quark flavor puts serious stress on composite Higgs models: flavor bounds imply a tuning of a few per-mille (at best) in the Higgs potential. Composite twin Higgs (CTH) models significantly reduce this tension by opening up a new region of parameter space, obtained by raising the coupling among the composites close to the strong coupling limit $g_* \sim 4π$, thereby raising the scale of composites to around 10 TeV. This does not lead to large tuning in the Higgs potential since the leading quantum corrections are canceled by the twin partners (rather than the composites). We survey the leading flavor bounds on the CTH, which correspond to tree-level $ΔF=2$ four-Fermi operators from Kaluza-Klein (KK) Z exchange in the kaon system and 1-loop corrections from KK fermions to the electric dipole moment of the neutron. We provide a parametric estimate for these bounds and also perform a numeric scan of the parameter space using the complete calculation for both quantities. The results confirm our expectation that CTH models accommodate anarchic flavor significantly better than regular composite Higgs (CH) models. Our conclusions apply both to the identical and fraternal twin cases.

A Holographic Twin Higgs Model

We present a UV completion of the twin Higgs idea in the framework of holographic composite Higgs. The SM contribution to the Higgs potential is effectively cut off by the SM-singlet mirror partners at the sigma-model scale f, naturally allowing for m_{KK} beyond the LHC reach. The bulk symmetry is SU(7) X SO(8), broken on the IR brane into SU(7) X SO(7) and on the UV brane into (SU(3) X SU(2) X U(1))^{SM} X (SU(3) X SU(2) X U(1))^{mirror} X Z2. The field content on the UV brane is the SM, extended by a sector transforming under the mirror gauge group, with the Z2 exchanging the two sectors. An additional Z2 breaking term is holographically generated to reproduce the Higgs mass and VEV, with a mild O(10%) tuning. This model has no trace at the LHC, but can by probed by precision Higgs measurements at future lepton colliders, and by direct searches for KK excitations at a 100 TeV collider.
