Semi-global symplectic invariant of the champagne bottle

We study a two degrees of freedom Hamiltonian system describing the motion of a particle in a potential field of the form of $S^1$ symmetric double well, namely $V = - (x_1^2 + x_2^2) + (x_1^2 + x_2^2)^2$, known also as a champagne bottle potential. This system is completely integrable. The champagne bottle is the simplest member of a class of integrable systems that have no global action variables due to a non-trivial monodromy, Bates (1991). Beyond that, the geometric and dynamical properties of the system near the equilibrium are of primary interest. We calculate the Birkhoff normal form and the nontrivial action near the focus-focus singularity and obtain the semi-global symplectic invariant near focus-focus point, which is introduced by Vũ Ng\d{o}c (2003). Examples of such calculations are still few. We compare our result with the semi-global symplectic invariant of the spherical pendulum, calculated by Dullin (2013).

Dynamics of the Drinfeld-Sokolov-Wilson system: well-posedness and (in)stability of the traveling waves

We analyze the Drinfeld-Sokolob-Wilson system, which features a dispersive, KdV type evolution with a dispersionless conservation law. We establish well-posedness with low regularity initial data $L^2({\mathbb T})\times L^2({\mathbb T})$ for the Cauchy problem on periodic background, which is then extrapolated to global solutions, due to $L^2$ conservation law. We also establish a dynamically more relevant result, namely a global persistence of solutions with (large) initial data in $H^1({\mathbb T})\times L^2({\mathbb T})$. This is obtained by following a more sophisticated approach, specifically the method of normal forms. Finally, for a fixed period $L$, we construct an explicit one parameter family of periodic waves, see \eqref{2.16} below. We show that they are all spectrally unstable with respect to co-periodic perturbations. Specifically, we show that the Hamiltonian instability index is equal to one, which identifies the instability as a single positive growing mode.

Non-integrability of a three dimensional generalized Hénon-Heiles system

In recent paper Fakkousy et al. show that the 3D Hénon-Heiles system with Hamiltonian $ H = \frac{1}{2} (p_1 ^2 + p_2 ^2 + p_3 ^2) +\frac{1}{2} (A q_1 ^2 + C q_2 ^2 + B q_3 ^2) + (αq_1 ^2 + γq_2 ^2)q_3 + \fracβ{3}q_3 ^3 $ is integrable in sense of Liouville when $α= γ, \fracαβ = 1, A = B = C$; or $α= γ, \fracαβ = \frac{1}{6}, A = C$, $B$-arbitrary; or $α= γ, \fracαβ = \frac{1}{16}, A = C, \frac{A}{B} = \frac{1}{16}$ (and of course, when $α=γ=0$, in which case the Hamiltonian is separable). It is known that the second case remains integrable for $A, C, B$ arbitrary. Using Morales-Ramis theory, we prove that there are no other cases of integrability for this system.

Near-integrability of periodic Klein-Gordon lattices

In this paper we study the Klein-Gordon (KG) lattice with periodic boundary conditions. It is an $N$ degrees of freedom Hamiltonian system with linear inter-site forces and nonlinear on-site potential, which here is taken to be of the $ϕ^4$ form. First, we prove that the system in consideration is non-integrable in Liuville sense. The proof is based on the Morales-Ramis theory. Next, we deal with the resonant Birkhoff normal form of the KG Hamiltonian, truncated to order four. Due to the choice of potential, the periodic KG lattice shares the same set of discrete symmetries as the periodic Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) chain. Then we show that the above normal form is integrable. To do this we utilize the results of B. Rink on FPU chains. If $N$ is odd this integrable normal form turns out to be KAM nondegenerate Hamiltonian. This implies the existence of many invariant tori at low-energy level in the dynamics of the periodic KG lattice, on which the motion is quasi-periodic. We also prove that the KG lattice with Dirichlet boundary conditions (that is, with fixed endpoints) admits an integrable, KAM nondegenerated normal forth order form, which in turn shows that almost all low-energetic solutions of KG lattice with fixed endpoints are quasi-periodic.

A note on the integrability of Hamiltonian 1 : 2 : 2 resonance

We study the integrability of the Hamiltonian normal form of 1 : 2 : 2 resonance. It is known that this normal form truncated to order three is integrable. The truncated to order four normal form contains too many parameters. For a generic choice of parameters in the normal form up to order four we prove a non-integrability result using Morales-Ramis theory. We also isolate a non-trivial case of integrability.

Near-integrability of low dimensional periodic Klein-Gordon lattices

The low dimensional periodic Klein-Gordon lattices are studied for integrability. We prove that the periodic lattice with two particles and certain nonlinear potential is non integrable. However, in the cases of up to six particles, we prove that their Birkhoff-Gustavson normal forms are integrable, which allows us to apply KAM theory.

Non-Integrability of Some Higher-Order Painlevé Equations in the Sense of Liouville

In this paper we study the equation $$ w^{(4)} = 5 w" (w^2 - w') + 5 w (w')^2 - w^5 + (λz + α)w + γ, $$ which is one of the higher-order Painlevé equations (i.e., equations in the polynomial class having the Painlevé property). Like the classical Painlevé equations, this equation admits a Hamiltonian formulation, Bäcklund transformations and families of rational and special functions. We prove that this equation considered as a Hamiltonian system with parameters $γ/λ= 3 k$, $γ/λ= 3 k - 1$, $k \in \mathbb{Z}$, is not integrable in Liouville sense by means of rational first integrals. To do that we use the Ziglin-Morales-Ruiz-Ramis approach. Then we study the integrability of the second and third members of the $\mathrm{P}_{\mathrm{II}}$-hierarchy. Again as in the previous case it turns out that the normal variational equations are particular cases of the generalized confluent hypergeometric equations whose differential Galois groups are non-commutative and hence, they are obstructions to integrability.

Non-uniform continuity of periodic Holm-Staley b-family of equations

We consider a family of non-evolutionary partial differential equations known as Holm - Staley b - family which includes the integrable Camassa-Holm and Degasperis-Procesi equations. We show that the solution map is not uniformly continuous. The proof relies on a construction of smooth periodic travelling waves with small amplitude.
