Contact Geometry of Relativistic Particle Motion

We introduce a new geometric framework for relativistic particle dynamics based on contact geometry and suitable for treating dissipative processes like particle decay. The dynamics is formulated on a nine--dimensional extended phase space consisting of four position coordinates, four momenta, and an additional variable (functioning as a geometric variant of the particle's proper time). In this setting, the evolution is generated by an evolution contact vector field with a contact Hamiltonian encoding the mass shell. By promoting the proper time to an independent variable, the relativistic Hamilton canonical equations are rewritten in a fully geometric form without having to identify the proper time with a parameter along the worldlines. This makes for instance the evolution of massless particles (photons) well-defined without the need of reparametrization. The framework is then applied to decaying particles. Finally, we formulate a covariant kinetic theory and show how decaying particles can be described geometrically in this framework, changing the entropy.

On the role of geometry in statistical mechanics and thermodynamics I: Geometric perspective

This paper contains a fully geometric formulation of the General Equation for Non-Equilibrium Reversible-Irreversible Coupling (GENERIC). Although GENERIC, which is the sum of Hamiltonian mechanics and gradient dynamics, is a framework unifying a vast range of models in non-equilibrium thermodynamics, it has unclear geometric structure, due to the diverse geometric origins of Hamiltonian mechanics and gradient dynamics. The difference can be overcome by cotangent lifts of the dynamics, which leads, for instance, to a Hamiltonian form of gradient dynamics. Moreover, the lifted vector fields can be split into their holonomic and vertical representatives, which provides a geometric method of dynamic reduction. The lifted dynamics can be also given physical meaning, here called the rate-GENERIC. Finally, the lifts can be formulated within contact geometry, where the second law of thermodynamics is explicitly contained within the evolution equations.

On the role of geometry in statistical mechanics and thermodynamics II: Thermodynamic perspective

The General Equation for Non-Equilibrium Reversible-Irreversible Coupling (GENERIC) provides structure of mesoscopic multiscale dynamics that guarantees emergence of equilibrium states. Similarly, a lift of the GENERIC structure to iterated cotangent bundles, called a rate GENERIC, guarantees emergence of the vector fields that generate the approach to equilibrium. Moreover, the rate GENERIC structure also extends Onsager's variational principle. The MaxEnt (Maximum Entropy) principle in the GENERIC structure becomes the Onsager variational principle in the rate GENERIC structure. In the absence of external forces, the rate entropy is a potential that is closely related to the entropy production. In the presence of external forces when the entropy does not exist, the rate entropy still exists. While the entropy at the conclusion of the GENERIC time evolution gives rise to equilibrium thermodynamics, the rate entropy at the conclusion of the rate GENERIC time evolution gives rise to rate thermodynamics. Both GENERIC and rate GENERIC structures are put into the geometrical framework in the first paper of this series. The rate GENERIC is also shown to be related to Grad's hierarchy analysis of reductions of the Boltzmann equation. Chemical kinetics and kinetic theory provide illustrative examples. We introduce rate GENERIC extensions (and thus also Onsager-variational-principle formulations) of both chemical kinetics and the Boltzmann kinetic theory.

Multiscale thermodynamics of charged mixtures

A multiscale theory of interacting continuum mechanics and thermodynamics of mixtures of fluids, electrodynamics, polarization and magnetization is proposed. The mechanical (reversible) part of the theory is constructed in a purely geometric way by means of semidirect products. This leads to a complex Hamiltonian system with a new Poisson bracket, which can be used in principle with any energy functional. The thermodynamic (irreversible) part is added as gradient dynamics, generated by derivatives of a dissipation potential, which makes the theory part of the GENERIC framework. Subsequently, Dynamic MaxEnt reductions are carried out, which lead to reduced GENERIC models for smaller sets of state variables. Eventually, standard engineering models are recovered as the low-level limits of the detailed theory. The theory is then compared to recent literature.

Cauchy data space and multisymplectic formulation of conformal classical field theories

In this article we inspect the dynamics of classical field theories with a local conformal behavior. Our interest in the multisymplectic setting comes from its suitable description of field theories, and the conformal character has been added to account for field theories that are scale invariant, flat spaces, and because some conformal fields can be exactly solved or classified. In particular, we will solve the example of a conformal scalar field using the geometric Hamilton-Jacobi theory that is explicitly proposed for conformal fields on a multisymplectic manifold. To complete the geometric approach to study field theories, we propose the Hamilton-Jacobi theory for conformal fields in a Cauchy data space, in which space and time are split separately and the dynamics is depicted in an infinite-dimensional manifold.

A hierarchy of Poisson brackets in non-equilibrium thermodynamics

Reversible evolution of macroscopic and mesoscopic systems can be conveniently constructed from two ingredients: an energy functional and a Poisson bracket. The goal of this paper is to elucidate how the Poisson brackets can be constructed and what additional features we also gain by the construction. In particular, the Poisson brackets governing reversible evolution in one-particle kinetic theory, kinetic theory of binary mixtures, binary fluid mixtures, classical irreversible thermodynamics and classical hydrodynamics are derived from Liouville equation. Although the construction is quite natural, a few examples where it does not work are included (e.g. the BBGKY hierarchy). Finally, a new infinite grand-canonical hierarchy of Poisson brackets is proposed, which leads to Poisson brackets expressing non-local phenomena such as turbulent motion or evolution of polymeric fluids. Eventually, Lie-Poisson structures standing behind some of the brackets are identified.
