Drude weight of an interacting flat-band metal

Flatband systems form a new class of materials that challenge the conventional wisdom of transport. The intrinsically strong electronic correlations combined with the vanishing kinetic energy scale suggest a sensitive dependence of transport properties on the flat band states and make interacting flat bands promising candidates for exotic quantum transport. Utilizing the Drude weight, we investigate the low-frequency spectral properties of the electrical conductivity within a controlled analytic treatment of the many-body response at temperatures above the bandwidth and the interaction strength and below the bandgap. Focusing on this new transport regime, we demonstrate the potential of a quantum geometric approach for interacting systems and intermediate temperatures. The derived spectral weight yields unexplored four-point geometric contributions unrelated to the quantum metric, which questions the previously proposed projection methods. For long-ranged interactions, we show that the low-frequency spectral weight reduces to the variance of the Berry curvature.

Stoner ferromagnetism in a momentum-confined interacting 2D electron gas

In this work we investigate the ground state of a momentum-confined interacting 2D electron gas, a momentum-space analog of an infinite quantum well. The study is performed by combining analytical results with a numerical exact diagonalization procedure. We find a ferromagnetic ground state near a particular electron density and for a range of effective electron (or hole) masses. We argue that this observation may be relevant to the generalized Stoner ferromagnetism recently observed in multilayer graphene systems. The collective magnon excitations exhibit a linear dispersion, which originates from a diverging spin stiffness.

In-plane orbital magnetization as a probe for symmetry breaking in strained twisted bilayer graphene

Three symmetries prevent a twisted bilayer of graphene from developing an in-plane spontaneous magnetization in the absence of a magnetic field - time reversal symmetry, $C_2$ symmetry to $π$ rotation and $C_3$ symmetry to $2π/3$ rotation. In contrast, there are experimental and theoretical indications that, at certain electron densities, time reversal and $C_2$ symmetries are broken spontaneously, while the $C_3$ symmetry is often broken due to strain. We show that in-plane orbital magnetization is a very sensitive probe to the simultaneous breaking of these three symmetries, exhibiting surprisingly large values (of the order of one Bohr magneton per moiré unit cell) for valley polarized states at rather small values of heterostrain. We attribute these large values to the large magnitude of the characteristic magnetization of individual Bloch states, which we find to reflect the fast Dirac velocity of single layer graphene, rather than the slow velocity of the twisted bilayer. These large values are forced to mutually cancel in valley-symmetric states, but the cancellation does not occur in valley-polarized states. Our analysis is carried out both for non-interacting electrons and within a simplified Hartree-Fock framework.

Anomaly-induced sound absorption in Weyl semimetals

We develop a semiclassical theory of sound absorption in Weyl semimetals in magnetic fields. We focus on the contribution to the absorption that stems from the existence of Berry monopoles in the band structure of such materials, or, equivalently, due to the chiral anomaly and chiral magnetic effect. Sound absorption is shown to come primarily from the motion of Weyl nodes in energy space, associated with the propagation of a sound wave. We argue that acoustic magneto-chiral dichroism, which occurs when absorption of sound is different for opposite propagation directions, and for opposite directions of the magnetic field, can be a definitive probe of band topology. The part of the monopole-related sound magnetoabsorption that is even in the magnetic field is negative in time-reversal Weyl materials. The difference in the sign of the effect as compared to the positive anomaly-related transport magnetoconductance stems from the existence of valley electrochemical imbalances without magnetic field in the sound propagation problem. In centrosymmetric Weyl semimetals with few Weyl nodes, the magneto-absorption is negative at low frequencies, but can change sign with increasing frequency.
