Cohomology of solvable saturable pro-$p$ groups and Lie algebras

Let $p$ be an odd prime, and let $n\in \N$ be an integer. We show that the $n^{\text{th}}$ mod-$p$ cohomology of a solvable saturable pro-$p$ group is isomorphic to the $n^{\text{th}}$ mod-$p$ cohomology of its associated $\Z_p$-Lie algebra $\g$ as a $\F_p$-vector space. Addittonally, we obtain that the $n^{\text{th}}$ mod-$p$ cohomology of $\g$ and of $\g/p\g$ are isomorphic as $\F_p$-vector spaces.

On finitely generated Hausdorff spectra of groups acting on rooted trees

We answer two longstanding questions of Klopsch (1999) and Shalev (2000) by proving that the finitely generated Hausdorff spectrum of the closure of a finitely generated regular branch group with respect to the level-stabilizer filtration is the full interval [0,1]. Previous work related to the above questions include the celebrated result of Abért and Virág on the completeness of the finitely generated Hausdorff spectrum of the group of $p$-adic automorphisms $W_p$. We extend their result to any level-transitive iterated wreath product acting on a regular rooted tree, and more importantly, provide the first explicit examples of finitely generated subgroups with prescribed Hausdorff dimension. In fact, in $W_p$ such subgroups can be taken to be 2-generated, giving further evidence to a conjecture of Abért and Virág. Furthermore, we extend a well-known result of Klopsch (1999) for branch groups to closed level-transitive groups with fully dimensional rigid stabilizers: these have full Hausdorff spectrum with respect to the level-stabilizer filtration. In turn, we determine, for the first time, the Hausdorff spectum of many well-studied families of weakly branch groups. As an additional new contribution, we define {\it nice filtrations} (which include the level-stabilizer filtration). In fact, the first and the last result can be proven more generally with respect to these filtrations (under possibly some further assumptions). Finally, we also consider two standard filtrations, namely the $2$-central lower series, and the dimension subgroup or Jenning-Zassenhaus series in the closure of the first Grigorchuck group, and show that its finitely generated Hausdorff spectra with respect to these filtrations is the full interval [0,1], answering a recent question of de las Heras and Thillaisundaram (2022). This is obtained via a reduction to properties concerning to nice filtrations.

Orbits classifying extensions of prime power order groups

The strong isomorphism classes of extensions of finite groups are parametrized by orbits of a prescribed action on the second cohomology group. We study these orbits in the case of extensions of a finite abelian $p$-group by a cyclic factor of order $p$. As an application, we compute number and sizes of these orbits when the initial $p$-group is generated by at most $3$ elements.

Computing a spectral sequence of finite Heisenberg groups of prime power order

Let $p\geq 5$ be a prime number, let $n\geq 2$ be a natural number and let $\text{Heis}(p^n)$ denote the Heisenberg group modulo $p^n$. We study the Lyndon-Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence $E(\text{Heis}(p^n))$ associated to $\text{Heis}(p^n)$ considered as a split extension, and show that, $E(\text{Heis}(p^n))$ collapses in the third page. Moreover, for a fixed $p$, the spectral sequences $E(\text{Heis}(p^n))$ are isomorphic from the second page on.

On the cohomology of pro-fusion systems

We prove the Cartan-Eilenberg stable elements theorem and construct a Lyndon-Hochschild-Serre type spectral sequence for pro-fusion systems. As an application, we determine the continuous mod-$p$ cohomology ring of $\text{GL}_2(\mathbb{Z}_p)$ for any odd prime $p$.

A family of finite p-groups satisfying Carlson's conjecture

Let p>3 be a prime number and let r be an integer with 1<r<p-1. For each r, let moreover G_r denote the unique quotient of the maximal class pro-p group of size p^{r+1}. We show that the mod-p cohomology ring of G_r has depth one and that, in turn, it satisfies the equalities in Carlson's depth conjecture [3].

Pro-$p$ groups of positive rank gradient and Hausdorff dimension

Let $G$ be a finitely generated pro-$p$ group of positive rank gradient. Motivated by the study of Hausdorff dimension, we show that finitely generated closed subgroups $H$ of infinite index in $G$ never contain any infinite subgroups $K$ that are subnormal in~$G$ via finitely generated successive quotients. This pro-$p$ version of a well-known theorem of Greenberg generalises similar assertions that were known to hold for non-abelian free pro-$p$ groups, non-soluble Demushkin pro-$p$ groups and other related pro-$p$ groups. The result we prove is reminiscent of Gaboriau's theorem for countable groups with positive first $\ell^2$-Betti number, but not quite a direct analogue. The approach via the notion of Hausdorff dimension in pro-$p$ groups also leads to our main results. We show that every finitely generated pro-$p$ group $G$ of positive rank gradient has full Hausdorff spectrum $\text{hspec}^\mathcal{F}(G) = [0,1]$ with respect to the Frattini series~$\mathcal{F}$. Using different, Lie-theoretic techniques we also prove that finitely generated non-abelian free pro-$p$ groups and non-soluble Demushkin groups $G$ have full Hausdorff spectrum $\text{hspec}^\mathcal{Z}(G) = [0,1]$ with respect to the Zassenhaus series~$\mathcal{Z}$. This resolves a long-standing problem in the subject of Hausdorff dimensions in pro-$p$ groups. The results about full Hausdorff spectra hold more generally for finite direct products of finitely generated pro-$p$ groups of positive rank gradient and for mixed finite direct products of finitely generated non-abelian free pro-$p$ groups and non-soluble Demushkin groups, respectively. Analogously, the aforementioned results with respect to the Frattini series generalise further to Hausdorff dimension functions with respect to arbitrary iterated verbal filtrations. Finally, we determine the normal Hausdorff spectra of such direct products.

Cohomology of finite p-groups of fixed nilpotency class

Let p be a prime number and let c, d be natural numbers. Then, the number of possible isomorphism types for the mod p cohomology algebra of a d-generated finite p-group of nilpotency class c is bounded by a function depending only on p, c and d.

Cohomology of uniserial p-adic space groups with cyclic point group

Let $p$ be a fixed prime number and let $R$ denote a uniserial $p$-adic space group of dimension $d_x=(p-1)p^{x-1}$ and with cyclic point group of order $p^x$. In this short note we prove that all the quotients of $R$ of size bigger than or equal to $p^{d_x+x}$ have isomorphic mod $p$ cohomology groups. In particular, we show that the cohomology groups of sufficiently large quotients of the unique maximal class pro-$p$ group are isomorphic as $\F_p$-modules.

Cohomology of p-groups of nil potency class smaller than p

Let $p$ be a prime number, let $d$ be an integer and let $G$ be a $d$-generated finite $p$-group of nilpotency class smaller than $p$. Then the number of possible isomorphism types for the mod $p$ cohomology algebra $H^*(G;{\mathbb F}_p)$ is bounded in terms of $p$ and $d$.

Transporting cohomology in Lazard correspondence

Lazard correspondence provides an isomorphism of categories between finitely generated nilpotent pro-$p$ groups of nilpotency class smaller than $p$ and finitely generated nilpotent $\mathbb{Z}_p$-Lie algebras of nilpotency class smaller than $p$. Denote by $H_{Gr}^i$ and $H_{Lie}^i$ the group cohomology functors and the Lie cohomology functors respectively. The aim of this paper is to show that for $i=0$, $1$ and $1$, and for a given category of modules the cohomology functors $H_{Gr}^i\circ \textbf{exp}$ and $H^i_{Lie}$ are naturally equivalent. A similar result is proven for $i=3$ and the relative cohomology groups.

The cohomology of the sporadic group $J_2$ over $\mathbb{F}_3$

We describe the cohomology ring $H^*(J_2;\mathbb{F}_3)$ both as subring of $H^*(3^{1+2}_+;\mathbb{F}_3)$ and with an abstract presentation. We also give its Poincaré series. We use as tool a spectral sequence for the strongly closed $3$-subgroup of $J_2$. This method might be used to compute the cohomology of any finite simple group with a strongly closed $p$-subgroup.
