Isochrones in primordial magnetic field evolution

In the early universe, a primordial magnetic field undergoes a turbulent decay while its length scale increases due to an inverse cascade. The size of the largest processed eddy scales with the Alfvén speed and grows with time. In a diagram of Alfvén speed vs.\ length scale, all possible solutions must lie on a line through the origin with a slope proportional to the inverse of the present time. In principle, however, such lines can also be defined for earlier times. The lines for earlier times form isochrones that may be observationally accessible, for example through the magnetically driven stochastic gravitational wave background. However, the position and slope of these isochrones is sensitive to the zero point of the time. Here, we show that for any initial magnetic field, a proper time can be determined such that the resulting isochrones at early times are nearly parallel to those at late times, i.e., they have the same slope. We use two-dimensional numerical simulations of decaying MHD turbulence and vary the initial position of the peak of the magnetic energy spectrum. In this case, the evolution is governed by the conservation of anastrophy. A fit to the Alfvén time yields an accurate estimate of the factor by which the decay time is longer than the Alfvén time, while the offset in the fit provides an estimate of the proper time that needs to be added to the nominal time since the beginning of each simulation. We also find that the presence of an initial velocity field of realistic strength helps producing a more straight track from the beginning. The magnetic field parameters lie on universal isochrones even for early times. They provide a testable framework for magnetic fields generated at times as early as the end of inflation, starting with the time of reheating.

Primordial turbulence from inflation: a new inflaton-driven turbulent regime

For the first time, we establish a direct connection between inflationary dynamics and the subsequent magnetohydrodynamic evolution. Starting from vacuum fluctuations, we self-consistently evolve the coupled inflaton-plasma system through inflation, reheating, and into the radiation-dominated era. We find an inflaton-driven inverse cascade followed by freely decaying turbulence, with kinetic energy dominating over magnetic energy and driving dynamo amplification. The inflaton-driven turbulence causes steeper magnetic energy decay than helical turbulence and should therefore be accounted for subsequent evolution of primordial fields and their present-day observables.

Ultra slow-turn inflation

In standard multi-field models, tachyonic isocurvature perturbations generally indicate the presence of an instability. We revisit the stability of some known counterexamples and show that, in a certain class of models that we call ultra slow-turn, an exponentially decreasing turn rate can shut off this potential instability. We argue that the stability of a given model can be correctly inferred by the total entropy perturbation, even if the effective mass squared of the isocurvature perturbation is negative. Several recent supergravity- or string-inspired models such as fibre inflation, SL(2,$\mathbb{Z}$) attractors and modular inflation fall into the ultra slow-turn class.

Schwinger effect in axion inflation on a lattice

We present the first lattice simulations of the nonlinear evolution after axion inflation by self-consistently incorporating currents arising from Schwinger pair production. The tachyonically amplified gauge fields trigger the growth of Schwinger currents, leading to universal values for the conductivity and magnetic field at the onset of strong backreaction and subsequent quenching of gauge field production. We show that the Schwinger effect (prematurely) saturates gauge field production, thereby diminishing the prospects of high scale axion inflation magnetogenesis as a viable solution for blazar observations.

Magnetogenesis from axion-SU(2) inflation

We describe a novel proposal for inflationary magnetogenesis by identifying the non-Abelian sector of Spectator Chromo Natural Inflation (SCNI) with the $\rm{SU(2)}_{\rm L}$ sector of the Standard Model. This mechanism relies on the recently discovered attractor of SCNI in the strong backreaction regime, where the gauge fields do not decay on super-horizon scales and their backreaction leads to a stable new trajectory for the rolling axion field. The large super-horizon gauge fields are partly transformed after the electroweak phase transition into electromagnetic fields. The strength and correlation length of the resulting helical magnetic fields depend on the inflationary Hubble scale and the details of the SCNI sector. For suitable parameter choices we show that the strength of the resulting magnetic fields having correlation lengths around $1\, {\rm {Mpc}}$ are consistent with the required intergalactic magnetic fields for explaining the spectra of high energy $γ$ rays from distant blazars.

Generalised conditions for rapid-turn inflation

Rapid-turn slow-roll inflationary trajectories have been shown to be an attractor in two-field models, provided the turn rate is near constant and larger than the slow-roll parameters. These trajectories can produce primordial spectra consistent with current observations on CMB scales. We present the generalized consistency condition for sustained rapid-turn inflationary trajectory with two fields, arbitrary field-space metric and potential valid for any value of the turn rate. This has to be supplemented by a second condition to ensure slow roll evolution. Both conditions together constitute a tool to identify inflationary trajectories with arbitrary values of the turning rate without having to solve the equations of motion. We present a Python package for the numerical identification of regions in field-space and parameter space that allow for rapid-turn trajectories.

Axion Relic Pockets -- a theory of dark matter

We propose a new theory of dark matter based on axion physics and cosmological phase transitions. We show that theories in which a gauge coupling increases through a first-order phase transition naturally result in `axion relic pockets': regions of relic false vacua stabilised by the pressure from a kinematically trapped, hot axion gas. Axion relic pockets provide a viable and highly economical theory of dark matter: the macroscopic properties of the pockets depend only on a single parameter (the phase transition temperature). We describe the formation, evolution and present-day properties of axion relic pockets, and outline how their phenomenology is distinct from existing dark matter paradigms. We briefly discuss how laboratory experiments and astronomical observations can be used to test the theory, and identify gamma-ray observations of magnetised, dark-matter-dense environments as particularly promising.

Non-Gaussianity in rapid-turn multi-field inflation

We show that theories of inflation with multiple, rapidly turning fields can generate large amounts of non-Gaussianity. We consider a general theory with two fields, an arbitrary field-space metric, and a potential that supports sustained, rapidly turning field trajectories. Our analysis accounts for non-zero field cross-correlation and does not fix the power spectra of curvature and isocurvature perturbations to be equal at horizon crossing. Using the $δN$ formalism, we derive a novel, analytical formula for bispectrum generated from multi-field mixing on super-horizon scales. Rapid-turn inflation can produce a bispectrum with several potentially large contributions that are not necessarily of the local shape. We exemplify the applicability of our formula with a fully explicit model and show that the new contributions indeed can generate a large amplitude of local non-Gaussianity, $f_{\rm NL}^{\rm loc}\sim {\cal O}(1)$. These results will be important when interpreting the outcomes of future observations.

Backreaction of axion-SU(2) dynamics during inflation

We consider the effects of backreaction on axion-SU(2) dynamics during inflation. We use the linear evolution equations for the gauge field modes and compute their backreaction on the background quantities numerically using the Hartree approximation. We show that the spectator chromo-natural inflation attractor is unstable when back-reaction becomes important. Working within the constraints of the linear mode equations, we find a new dynamical attractor solution for the axion field and the vacuum expectation value of the gauge field, where the latter has an opposite sign with respect to the chromo-natural inflation solution. Our findings are of particular interest to the phenomenology of axion-SU(2) inflation, as they demonstrate the instability of the usual trajectory due to large backreaction effects. The viable parameter space of the model becomes significantly altered, provided future non-Abelian lattice simulations confirm the existence of the new dynamical attractor. In addition, the backreaction effects lead to characteristic oscillatory features in the primordial gravitational wave background that are potentially detectable with upcoming gravitational wave detectors.

Gravitational waves from spectator Gauge-flation

We investigate the viability of inflation with a spectator sector comprised of non-Abelian gauge fields coupled through a higher order operator. We dub this model "spectator Gauge-flation". We study the predictions for the amplitude and tensor tilt of chiral gravitational waves and conclude that a slightly red-tilted tensor power spectrum is preferred $n_T=-{\cal O}(0.01)$. As with related models, the enhancement of chiral gravitational waves with respect to the single-field vacuum gravitational wave background is controlled by the parameter $γ=g^2 Q^2/H^2$, where $g$ is the gauge coupling, $H$ is the Hubble scale and $Q$ is the VEV of the $SU(2)$ sector. The requirement that the $SU(2)$ is a spectator sector leads to a maximum allowed value for $γ$, thereby constraining the possible amplification. In order to provide concrete predictions, we use an $α$-attractor T-model potential for the inflaton sector. Potential observation of chiral gravitational waves with significantly tilted tensor spectra would then indicate the presence of additional couplings of the gauge fields to axions, like in the spectator axion-SU(2) model, or additional gauge field operators.

Shift-Symmetric Orbital Inflation: single field or multi-field?

We present a new class of two-field inflationary attractor models, known as `shift-symmetric orbital inflation', whose behaviour is strongly multi-field but whose predictions are remarkably close to those of single-field inflation. In these models, the field space metric and potential are such that the inflaton trajectory is along an `angular' isometry direction whose `radius' is constant but arbitrary. As a result, the radial (isocurvature) perturbations away from the trajectory are exactly massless and they freeze on superhorizon scales. These models are the first exact realization of the `ultra-light isocurvature' scenario, previously described in the literature, where a combined shift symmetry emerges between the curvature and isocurvature perturbations and results in primordial perturbation spectra that are entirely consistent with current observations. Due to the turning trajectory, the radial perturbation sources the tangential (curvature) perturbation and makes it grow linearly in time. As a result, only one degree of freedom (i.e. the one from isocurvature modes) is responsible for the primordial observables at the end of inflation, which yields the same phenomenology as in single-field inflation. In particular, isocurvature perturbations and local non-Gaussianity are highly suppressed here, even if the inflationary dynamics is truly multi-field. We comment on the generalization to models with more than two fields.

Multi-field inflation and preheating in asymmetric $α$-attractors

We analyze and compare the multi-field dynamics during inflation and preheating in symmetric and asymmetric models of $α$-attractors, characterized by a hyperbolic field-space manifold. We show that the generalized (asymmetric) E- and (symmetric) T-models exhibit identical two-field dynamics during inflation for a wide range of initial conditions. The resulting motion can be decomposed in two approximately single-field segments connected by a sharp turn in field-space. The details of preheating can nevertheless be different. For the T-model one main mass-scale dominates the evolution of fluctuations of the spectator field, whereas for the E-model, a competing mass-scale emerges due to the steepness of the potential away from the inflationary plateau, leading to different contributions to parametric resonance for small and large wave-numbers. Our linear multi-field analysis of fluctuations indicates that for highly curved manifolds, both the E- and T-models preheat almost instantaneously. For massless fields this is always due to efficient tachyonic amplification of the spectator field, making single-field results inaccurate. Interestingly, there is a parameter window corresponding to $r={\cal O}(10^{-5})$ and massive fields, where the preheating behavior is qualitatively and quantitatively different for symmetric and asymmetric potentials. In that case, the E-model can completely preheat due to self-resonance for values of the curvature where preheating in the T-model is inefficient. This provides a first distinguishing feature between models that otherwise behave identically, both at the single-field and multi-field level. Finally, we discuss how one can describe multi-field preheating on a hyperbolic manifold by identifying the relevant mass-scales that control the growth of inflaton and spectator fluctuations, which can be applied to any $α$-attractor model and beyond.

Universality and scaling in multi-field $α$-attractor preheating

We explore preheating in multi-field models of inflation in which the field-space metric is a highly curved hyperbolic manifold. One broad family of such models is called $α$-attractors, whose single-field regimes have been extensively studied in the context of inflation and supergravity. We focus on a simple two-field generalization of the $T$-model, which has received renewed attention in the literature. Krajewski et al. concluded, using lattice simulations, that multi-field effects can dramatically speed-up preheating. We recover their results and further demonstrate that significant analytical progress can be made for preheating in these models using the WKB approximation and Floquet analysis. We find a simple scaling behavior of the Floquet exponents for large values of the field-space curvature, that enables a quick estimation of the $T$-model reheating efficiency for any large value of the field-space curvature. In this regime we further observe and explain universal preheating features that arise for different values of the potential steepness. In general preheating is faster for larger negative values of the field-space curvature and steeper potentials. For very highly curved field-space manifolds preheating is essentially instantaneous.
