Quark cluster expansion model for interpreting finite-T lattice QCD thermodynamics

We present a unified approach to the thermodynamics of hadron-quark-gluon matter at finite temperatures on the basis of a quark cluster expansion in the form of a generalized Beth-Uhlenbeck approach with a generic ansatz for the hadronic phase shifts that fulfills the Levinson theorem. The change in the composition of the system from a hadron resonance gas to a quark-gluon plasma takes place in the narrow temperature interval of $150 - 185$ MeV where the Mott dissociation of hadrons is triggered by the dropping quark mass as a result of the restoration of chiral symmetry. The deconfinement of quark and gluon degrees of freedom is regulated by the Polyakov loop variable that signals the breaking of the $Z(3)$ center symmetry of the color $SU(3)$ group of QCD. We suggest a Polyakov-loop quark-gluon plasma model with $\mathcal{O}(α_s)$ virial correction and solve the stationarity condition of the thermodynamic potential (gap equation) for the Polyakov loop. The resulting pressure is in excellent agreement with lattice QCD simulations up to high temperatures.

Screening masses towards chiral limit

A possible effective restoration of the anomalous $U_A(1)$ symmetry would have a non-trivial effect on the global phase diagram of QCD. In this work we investigate the effective restoration of the $U_A(1)$ through the calculation of scalar and pseudo-scalar screening masses and corresponding susceptibilities, for physical and lower than physical pion masses. Calculations have been performed in (2+1)-flavor HISQ discretization scheme with a physical value of the strange quark mass. Preliminary calculations of the continuum extrapolated scalar and pseudo-scalar masses are presented, based on lattices with three different temporal extent. Non-trivial structure of the difference between scalar and pseudo-scalar susceptibilites are discussed for $N_τ=8$ lattices.

Diffusion coefficient matrix of the strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma

We study the diffusion properties of the strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma (sQGP) and evaluate the diffusion coefficient matrix for the baryon ($B$), strange ($S$) and electric ($Q$) charges - $κ_{qq'}$ ($q,q' = B, S, Q$) and show their dependence on temperature $T$ and baryon chemical potential $μ_B$. The non-perturbative nature of the sQGP is evaluated within the Dynamical Quasi-Particle Model (DQPM) which is matched to reproduce the equation of state of the partonic matter above the deconfinement temperature $T_c$ from lattice QCD. The calculation of diffusion coefficients is based on two methods: i) the Chapman-Enskog method for the linearized Boltzmann equation, which allows to explore non-equilibrium corrections for the phase-space distribution function in leading order of the Knudsen numbers as well as ii) the relaxation time approximation (RTA). In this work we explore the differences between the two methods. We find a good agreement with the available lattice QCD data in case of the electric charge diffusion coefficient (or electric conductivity) at vanishing baryon chemical potential as well as a qualitative agreement with the recent predictions from the holographic approach for all diagonal components of the diffusion coefficient matrix. The knowledge of the diffusion coefficient matrix is also of special interest for more accurate hydrodynamic simulations.

Sensitivity of the Polyakov loop and related observables to chiral symmetry restoration

While the Polyakov loop is an order parameter of the deconfinement transition in the heavy quark mass regime of QCD, its sensitivity to the deconfinement of light, dynamical quarks in QCD is not apparent. On the other hand, the quark mass dependence of the Polyakov loop is sensitive to the appearance of a chiral phase transition. Using lattice QCD calculations in the staggered fermion discretization scheme at finite values of the lattice spacing, $aT = 1/8$, we show here, for the first time, that the Polyakov loop expectation value, and the heavy quark free energy extracted from it, behave like energy-like observables in the vicinity of the chiral phase transition temperature $T_c$. Consistent with scaling behavior of energy-like observables in the 3-$d$, O(2) universality class, the quark mass derivatives diverge in the chiral limit at $T_c$ while the temperature derivatives stay finite. The latter will develop a characteristic spike at $T_c$. This, however, may be resolved only in calculations with quark masses being two orders of magnitude smaller than those currently accessible in lattice QCD calculations.

Heavy quark momentum diffusion from the lattice using gradient flow

We apply the gradient flow on a color-electric two-point function that encodes the heavy quark momentum diffusion coefficient. The simulations are done on fine isotropic lattices in the quenched approximation at $1.5\,T_c$. The continuum extrapolation is performed at fixed flow time followed by a second extrapolation to zero flow time. Perturbative calculations of this correlation function under Wilson flow are used to enhance the extrapolations of the non-perturbative lattice correlator. The final estimate for the continuum correlator at zero flow time largely agrees with one obtained from a previous study using the multi-level algorithm. We perform a spectral reconstruction based on perturbative model fits to estimate the heavy quark momentum diffusion coefficient. The approach we present here yields high-precision data for the correlator and is also applicable for actions with dynamical fermions.

Conserved charge fluctuations in the chiral limit

We study the signs of criticality in conserved charge fluctuations and related observables of finite temperature QCD at vanishing chemical potential, as we approach the chiral limit of two light quarks. Our calculations have been performed on gauge ensembles generated using Highly Improved Staggered Quark (HISQ) fermion action, with pion masses ranging from 140 MeV to 55 MeV.

Universal scaling properties of QCD close to the chiral limit

We present a lattice QCD based determination of the chiral phase transition temperature in QCD with two massless (up and down) and one strange quark having its physical mass. We propose and calculate two novel estimators for the chiral transition temperature for several values of the light quark masses, corresponding to Goldstone pion masses in the range of $58~{\rm MeV}\lesssim m_π\lesssim 163~{\rm MeV}$. The chiral phase transition temperature is determined by extrapolating to vanishing pion mass using universal scaling relations. After thermodynamic, continuum and chiral extrapolations we find the chiral phase transition temperature $T_c^0=132^{+3}_{-6}$ MeV. We also show some preliminary calculations that use the conventional estimator for the pseudo-critical temperature and compare with the new estimators for $T_c^0$. Furthermore, we show results for the ratio of the chiral order parameter and its susceptibility and argue that this ratio can be used to differentiate between $O(N)$ and $Z_2$ universality classes in a non-parametric manner.

Sensitivity of the Polyakov loop to chiral symmetry restoration

In the heavy, static quark mass regime of QCD, the Polyakov loop is well known to be an order parameter of the deconfinement phase transition; however, the sensitivity of the Polyakov loop to the deconfinement of light, dynamical quarks is less clear. On the other hand, from the perspective of an effective Lagrangian written in the vicinity of the chiral transition, the Polyakov loop is an energy-like operator and should hence scale as any energy-like operator would. We show here that the Polyakov loop and heavy-quark free energy are sensitive to the chiral transition, i.e. their scaling is consistent with energy-like observables in 3-$d$ $O(N)$ universality classes.

Open-charm Euclidean correlators within heavy-meson EFT interactions

The open-charm Euclidean correlators have been computed for the first time using the thermal spectral functions extracted from a finite-temperature self-consistent unitarized approach based on a chiral effective field theory that implements heavy-quark spin symmetry. The inclusion of the full-energy dependent open-charm spectral functions in the calculation of the Euclidean correlators leads to a similar behaviour as the one obtained in lattice QCD for temperatures well below the transition deconfinement temperature. The discrepancies at temperatures close or above the transition deconfinement temperature could indicate that higher-energy states, that are not present in the open-charm spectral functions, become relevant for a quantitative description of the lattice QCD correlators at those temperatures. In fact, we find that the inclusion of a continuum of scattering states improves the comparison at small Euclidean times, whereas differences still arise for large times.

Open-Boundary Conditions in the Deconfined Phase

In this work, we consider open-boundary conditions at high temperatures, as they can potentially be of help to measure the topological susceptibility. In particular, we measure the extent of the boundary effects at $T=1.5T_c$ and $T=2.7T_c$. In the first case, it is larger than at $T=0$ while we find it to be smaller in the second case. The length of this "boundary zone" is controlled by the screening masses. We use this fact to measure the scalar and pseudo-scalar screening masses at these two temperatures. We observe a mass gap at $T=1.5T_c$ but not at $T=2.7T_c$. Finally, we use our pseudo-scalar channel analysis to estimate the topological susceptibility. The results at $T=1.5T_c$ are in good agreement with the literature. At $T=2.7T_c$, they appear to suffer from topological freezing, impeding us from providing a precise determination of the topological susceptibility. It still provides us with a lower bound, which is already in mild tension with some of the existing results.

Thermal modifications of quarkonia and heavy quark diffusion from a comparison of continuum-extrapolated lattice results to perturbative QCD

We investigate the in-medium modifications of heavy quarkonia in the vector channel and the heavy quark diffusion coefficient by comparing Euclidean correlators from the lattice to a perturbative spectral function. On the lattice side, we work with continuum extrapolated data from four different large and fine lattices with Clover-improved Wilson fermions in the quenched approximation at five temperatures (0.75, 1.1, 1.3, 1.5 and 2.25$T_c$). On the perturbative side, we use a combination of pNRQCD and vacuum asymptotics to describe the spectral function. After accounting for systematic errors, we obtain a spectral function that is suited to describe the bound state region. This spectral function describes charmonium well without a resonance peak at any of our analyzed temperatures above $T_c$, while we observe a thermally broadened resonance peak for bottomonium that is only melted at our largest temperature, $2.25T_c$. For the transport contribution we assume a Breit-Wigner shaped peak and find that the drag coefficient of charm quarks is larger than that of bottom quarks.

Euclidean correlation functions of the topological charge density

We present first results of our study on the Euclidean topological charge density correlation function. In order to get a well defined topological charge density and to improve the signal of the correlation function at large separations we make use of the gradient flow. We investigate the flow-time dependence on fine quenched lattices. The final goal of this study is to perform a continuum extrapolation for the pure SU(3) plasma and to extract the related transport coefficient, the sphaleron rate.

Dirac Eigenvalue spectrum of $N_f$=2+1 QCD towards the chiral limit using HISQ fermions

We utilize the eigenvalue filtering technique combined with the stochastic estimate of the mode number to determine the eigenvalue spectrum. Simulations of (2 + 1)-flavor QCD are performed using the Highly Improved Staggered Quarks (HISQ/tree) action on $N_τ$ = 8 lattices with aspect ratios $N_σ/N_τ$ ranging from 5 to 7. The strange quark mass is fixed to its physical value $m_{s}^{\rm phy}$, and the light quark masses $m_{l}$ are varied from $m_{s}^{\rm phy}/40$ to $m_{s}^{\rm phy}/160$ which correspond to pion mass $m_π$ ranging from 110 MeV to 55 MeV in the continuum limit. We compute the chiral condensate and $χ_π - χ_δ$ through the eigenvalue spectrum obtained from the the eigenvalue filtering method. We compare these results with those obtained from a direct calculation of the observables which involves inversions of the fermion matrix using the stochastic "noise vector" method. We find that these approaches yield consistent results. Furthermore, we also investigate the quark mass and temperature dependences of the Dirac eigenvalue density at zero eigenvalues to gain more insights about the $U_A(1)$ symmetry breaking in QCD.

Polyakov Loop Susceptibility and Correlators in the Chiral Limit

In quenched QCD the Polyakov loop is an order parameter of the deconfinement transition, but with decreasing quark mass, the peak in the Polyakov loop susceptibility becomes less pronounced, and it loses its interpretation as an indicator for deconfinement. For this $N_f=2+1$ HISQ study, we fix the strange quark mass $m_s$ at its physical value and investigate the dependence of the Polyakov loop on the light quark mass $m_l$ in the range $m_s/m_l=27-160$, following $m_l$ toward the chiral limit. In particular we will look how the inflection point and susceptibility behave as we decrease $m_l$, to see whether one finds any indication of a crossover, and therefore whether the Polyakov loop is sensitive to the chiral phase transition. Preliminary results show no signal of a crossover from the real part of the Polyakov loop in the vicinity of the chiral crossover. Closely related is an investigation of Polyakov loop correlations and the Debye mass in this limit. Preliminary results suggest little or no dependence on $m_l$.

Color-electric correlation functions under gradient flow

We report on the progress of our study on the color-electric correlation functions under gradient flow on the lattice. This calculation is the first step of our long-term project to estimate a series of important transport coefficients, of which the heavy quark momentum diffusion coefficient is our first attempt, as it can be extracted from a color-electric correlation function that has been calculated non-perturbatively using noise reduction technique in the quenched approximation [1]. By comparing the flowed correlation function with those obtained by other signal-improving techniques, for instance the multi-level algorithm used in [1], one can gain insight into the applicability of the gradient flow and the renormalization of the correlation functions. We start with quenched, isotropic lattices. Currently we have finished measuring the color-electric correlation functions on 4 different lattices with $β$-values corresponding to a temperature of $T\approx 1.5T_c$. We perform a continuum extrapolation on the flowed correlators at fixed physical flow times followed by an extrapolation of the continuum estimate back to zero flow time. The next step is to extend the study to different temperatures and to extend the study to dynamical QCD.

Conserved charge fluctuations with smaller-than-physical quark masses

We present results from calculations of conserved charge fluctuations in $(2+1)$-flavor QCD using light quark masses in the range $m_s/80 \leq m_l \leq m_s/27$, with the strange quark mass ($m_s$) kept fixed at its physical value. This corresponds to a Goldstone pion mass in the range $80$ MeV $\leq m_π\leq 140$ MeV. The measurements have been done using HISQ fermion discretization and Symanzik improved gauge action. We discuss the quark mass dependence of up to 6th order cumulants and present first results on the separation of singular and regular contributions to these cumulants. From these results, we examine the nature of the chiral phase transition and the variation of the curvature of the crossover line as we approach the chiral limit.

Meson Screening Masses in (2+1)-Flavor QCD

We present lattice QCD results for mesonic screening masses in the temperature range 140 MeV $\lesssim T \lesssim$ 2500 MeV. Our calculations were carried out using (2+1)-flavors of the Highly Improved Staggered Quark (HISQ) action, with a physical value for the strange quark mass and two values of the light quark mass corresponding to pion masses of 160 MeV and 140 MeV. Continuum-extrapolated results were obtained using calculations with a variety of lattice spacings corresponding to temporal lattice extents $N_τ= 6 - 16$. We discuss the implications of these results for the effective restoration of various symmetries in the high temperature phase of QCD, as well as the approach toward the perturbative limit.
