SU(2) reduction in N=4 supersymmetric mechanics

We perform an su(2) Hamiltonian reduction of the general su(2)-invariant action for a self-coupled (4,4,0) supermultiplet. As a result, we elegantly recover the N=4 supersymmetric mechanics with spin degrees of freedom which was recently constructed in arXiv:0812.4276. This observation underscores the exceptional role played by the ``root'' supermultiplet in N=4 supersymmetric mechanics.

Supersymmetric Calogero models by gauging

New superconformal extensions of d=1 Calogero-type systems are obtained by gauging the U(n) isometry of matrix superfield models. We consider the cases of N=1, N=2 and N=4 one-dimensional supersymmetries. The bosonic core of the N=1 and N=2 models is the standard conformal A_{n-1} Calogero system, whereas the N=4 model is an extension of the U(2)-spin Calogero system.

Instantons and Yang-Mills Flows on Coset Spaces

We consider the Yang-Mills flow equations on a reductive coset space G/H and the Yang-Mills equations on the manifold R x G/H. On nonsymmetric coset spaces G/H one can introduce geometric fluxes identified with the torsion of the spin connection. The condition of G-equivariance imposed on the gauge fields reduces the Yang-Mills equations to phi^4-kink equations on R. Depending on the boundary conditions and torsion, we obtain solutions to the Yang-Mills equations describing instantons, chains of instanton-anti-instanton pairs or modifications of gauge bundles. For Lorentzian signature on R x G/H, dyon-type configurations are constructed as well. We also present explicit solutions to the Yang-Mills flow equations and compare them with the Yang-Mills solutions on R x G/H.

N=4 mechanics, WDVV equations and roots

N=4 superconformal multi-particle quantum mechanics on the real line is governed by two prepotentials, U and F, which obey a system of partial differential equations linear in U and generalizing the Witten-Dijkgraaf-Verlinde-Verlinde (WDVV) equation for F. Putting U=0 yields a class of models (with zero central charge) which are encoded by the finite Coxeter root systems. We extend these WDVV solutions F in two ways: the A_n system is deformed n-parametrically to the edge set of a general orthocentric n-simplex, and the BCF-type systems form one-parameter families. A classification strategy is proposed. A nonzero central charge requires turning on U in a given F background, which we show is outside of reach of the standard root-system ansatz for indecomposable systems of more than three particles. In the three-body case, however, this ansatz can be generalized to establish a series of nontrivial models based on the dihedral groups I_2(p), which are permutation symmetric if 3 divides p. We explicitly present their full prepotentials.

On the N=2 Supersymmetric Camassa-Holm and Hunter-Saxton Equations

We consider N=2 supersymmetric extensions of the Camassa-Holm and Hunter-Saxton equations. We show that they admit geometric interpretations as Euler equations on the superconformal algebra of contact vector fields on the 1|2-dimensional supercircle. We use the bi-Hamiltonian formulation to derive Lax pairs. Moreover, we present some simple examples of explicit solutions. As a by-product of our analysis we obtain a description of the bounded traveling-wave solutions for the two-component Hunter-Saxton equation.

N=4 superconformal n-particle mechanics via superspace

We revisit the (untwisted) superfield approach to one-dimensional multi-particle systems with N=4 superconformal invariance. The requirement of a standard (flat) bosonic kinetic energy implies the existence of inertial (super-)coordinates, which is nontrivial beyond three particles. We formulate the corresponding integrability conditions, whose solution directly yields the superpotential, the two prepotentials and the bosonic potential. The structure equations for the two prepotentials, including the WDVV equation, follow automatically. The general solution for translation-invariant three-particle models is presented and illustrated with examples. For the four-particle case, we take advantage of known WDVV solutions to construct a D_3 and a B_3 model, thus overcoming a previously-found barrier regarding the bosonic potential. The general solution and classification remain a challenge.

N=4 Mechanics, WDVV Equations and Polytopes

N=4 superconformal n-particle quantum mechanics on the real line is governed by two prepotentials, U and F, which obey a system of partial nonlinear differential equations generalizing the Witten-Dijkgraaf-Verlinde-Verlinde (WDVV) equation for F. The solutions are encoded by the finite Coxeter systems and certain deformations thereof, which can be encoded by particular polytopes. We provide A_n and B_3 examples in some detail. Turning on the prepotential U in a given F background is very constrained for more than three particles and nonzero central charge. The standard ansatz for U is shown to fail for all finite Coxeter systems. Three-particle models are more flexible and based on the dihedral root systems.

The noncommutative sine-Gordon breather

As shown in [hep-th/0406065], there exists a noncommutative deformation of the sine-Gordon model which remains (classically) integrable but features a second scalar field. We employ the dressing method (adapted to the Moyal-deformed situation) for constructing the deformed kink-antikink and breather configurations. Explicit results and plots are presented for the leading noncommutativity correction to the breather. Its temporal periodicity is unchanged.

SU(3)-Equivariant Quiver Gauge Theories and Nonabelian Vortices

We consider SU(3)-equivariant dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills theory on Kaehler manifolds of the form M x SU(3)/H, with H = SU(2) x U(1) or H = U(1) x U(1). The induced rank two quiver gauge theories on M are worked out in detail for representations of H which descend from a generic irreducible SU(3)-representation. The reduction of the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau equations on these spaces induces nonabelian quiver vortex equations on M, which we write down explicitly. When M is a noncommutative deformation of the space C^d, we construct explicit BPS and non-BPS solutions of finite energy for all cases. We compute their topological charges in three different ways and propose a novel interpretation of the configurations as states of D-branes. Our methods and results generalize from SU(3) to any compact Lie group.

WDVV solutions from orthocentric polytopes and Veselov systems

N=4 superconformal n-particle quantum mechanics on the real line is governed by two prepotentials, U and F, which obey a system of partial nonlinear differential equations generalizing the Witten-Dijkgraaf-Verlinde-Verlinde (WDVV) equation. For U=0 one remains with the WDVV equation which suggests an ansatz for F in terms of a set of covectors to be found. One approach constructs such covectors from suitable polytopes, another method solves Veselov's \vee-conditions in terms of deformed Coxeter root systems. I relate the two schemes for the A_n example.

Yang-Mills Instantons and Dyons on Group Manifolds

We consider Euclidean SU(N) Yang-Mills theory on the space GxR, where G is a compact semisimple Lie group, and introduce first-order BPS-type equations which imply the full Yang-Mills equations. For gauge fields invariant under the adjoint G-action these BPS equations reduce to first-order matrix equations, to which we give instanton solutions. In the case of G=SU(2)=S^3, our matrix equations are recast as Nahm equations, and a further algebraic reduction to the Toda chain equations is presented and solved for the SU(3) example. Finally, we change the metric on GxR to Minkowski and construct finite-energy dyon-type Yang-Mills solutions. The special case of G=SU(2)xSU(2) may be used in heterotic flux compactifications.

Non-anticommutative solitons

Certain supersymmetric sigma models in 2+1 dimensions feature multi-soliton solutions, with and without scattering. We subject these systems to a non-anticommutative deformation by replacing the Grassmann algebra of the odd superspace coordinates with a Clifford algebra. Static CP^1 and scattering U(2) solitons are constructed and carry an additional spin-1/2 degree of freedom due to the deformation. Abelian BPS solutions exist as well but have infinite action, in contrast to the Moyal case.

Scattering of Noncommutative Waves and Solitons in a Supersymmetric Chiral Model in 2+1 Dimensions

Interactions of noncommutative waves and solitons in 2+1 dimensions can be analyzed exactly for a supersymmetric and integrable U(n) chiral model extending the Ward model. Using the Moyal-deformed dressing method in an antichiral superspace, we construct explicit time-dependent solutions of its noncommutative field equations by iteratively solving linear equations. The approach is illustrated by presenting scattering configurations for two noncommutative U(2) plane waves and for two noncommutative U(2) solitons as well as by producing a noncommutative U(1) two-soliton bound state.

N=4 superconformal Calogero models

We continue the research initiated in hep-th/0607215 and apply our method of conformal automorphisms to generate various N=4 superconformal quantum many-body systems on the real line from a set of decoupled particles extended by fermionic degrees of freedom. The su(1,1|2) invariant models are governed by two scalar potentials obeying a system of nonlinear partial differential equations which generalizes the Witten-Dijkgraaf-Verlinde-Verlinde equations. As an application, the N=4 superconformal extension of the three-particle (A-type) Calogero model generates a unique G_2-type Hamiltonian featuring three-body interactions. We fully analyze the N=4 superconformal three- and four-particle models based on the root systems of A_1 + G_2 and F_4, respectively. Beyond Wyllard's solutions we find a list of new models, whose translational non-invariance of the center-of-mass motion fails to decouple and extends even to the relative particle motion.

Noncommutative Solitons

Solitonic objects play a central role in gauge and string theory (as, e.g., monopoles, black holes, D-branes, etc.). Certain string backgrounds produce a noncommutative deformation of the low-energy effective field theory, which allows for new types of solitonic solutions. I present the construction, moduli spaces and dynamics of Moyal-deformed solitons, exemplified in the 2+1 dimensional Yang-Mills-Higgs theory and its Bogomolny system, which is gauge-fixed to an integrable chiral sigma model (the Ward model). Noncommutative solitons for various 1+1 dimensional integrable systems (such as sine-Gordon) easily follow by dimensional and algebraic reduction. Supersymmetric extensions exist as well and are related to twistor string theory.

Hierarchy of N=8 Mechanics Models

Using the N=4 superspace approach in one dimension (time), we construct general N=8 supersymmetric mechanics actions for the multiplets (b,8,8-b) classified in hep-th/0406015, with the main focus on the previously unexplored cases of (8,8,0), (7,8,1) and (6,8,2), as well as on (5,8,3) for completeness. N=8 supersymmetry of the action amounts to a harmonicity condition for the Lagrangian with respect to its superfield arguments. We derive the generic off-shell component action for the ``root'' multiplet (8,8,0), prove that the actions for all other multiplets follow from it through automorphic dualities and argue that this hierarchical structure is universal. The bosonic target geometry in all cases is conformally flat, with a unique scalar potential (except for the root multiplet). We show that the N=4 superfield constraints respect the full R-symmetry and find the explicit realization of its quotient over the manifest R-symmetry on superfields and component fields. Several R-symmetric N=4 superfield Lagrangians with N=8 supersymmetry are either newly found or reproduced by a simple universal method.

Quantum Aspects of the Noncommutative Sine-Gordon Model

In this paper, we first use semi-classical methods to study quantum field theoretical aspects of the integrable noncommutative sine-Gordon model proposed in [hep-th/0406065]. In particular, we examine the fluctuations at quadratic order around the static kink solution using the background field method. We derive equations of motion for the fluctuations and argue that at O(theta^2) the spectrum of fluctuations remains essentially the same as that of the corresponding commutative theory. We compute the one-loop two-point functions of the sine-Gordon field and the additional scalar field present in the model and exhibit logarithmic divergences, only some of which lead to UV/IR mixing. We briefly discuss the one-loop renormalization in Euclidean signature and comment on the obstacles in determining the noncommutativity corrections to the quantum mass of the kink.

Supersymmetric noncommutative solitons

I consider a supersymmetric Bogomolny-type model in 2+1 dimensions originating from topological string theory. By a gauge fixing this model is reduced to a supersymmetric U(n) chiral model with a Wess-Zumino-Witten-type term in 2+1 dimensions. After a noncommutative extension of the model, I employ the dressing method to construct explicit multi-soliton configurations on noncommutative R^{2,1|2N}.
