Operator estimates for the crushed ice problem

Let $Δ_{Ω_\varepsilon}$ be the Dirichlet Laplacian in the domain $Ω_\varepsilon:=Ω\setminus\left(\cup_i D_{i \varepsilon}\right)$. Here $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ and $\{D_{i \varepsilon}\}_{i}$ is a family of tiny identical holes ("ice pieces") distributed periodically in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with period $\varepsilon$. We denote by $\mathrm{cap}(D_{i \varepsilon})$ the capacity of a single hole. It was known for a long time that $-Δ_{Ω_\varepsilon}$ converges to the operator $-Δ_Ω+q$ in strong resolvent sense provided the limit $q:=\lim_{\varepsilon\to 0} \mathrm{cap}(D_{i\varepsilon}) \varepsilon^{-n}$ exists and is finite. In the current contribution we improve this result deriving estimates for the rate of convergence in terms of operator norms. As an application, we establish the uniform convergence of the corresponding semi-groups and (for bounded $Ω$) an estimate for the difference of the $k$-th eigenvalue of $-Δ_{Ω_\varepsilon}$ and $-Δ_{Ω_\varepsilon}+q$. Our proofs relies on an abstract scheme for studying the convergence of operators in varying Hilbert spaces developed previously by the second author.

On Open Scattering Channels for a Branched Covering of the Euclidean Plane

We study the interaction of two scattering channels for a simple geometric model consisting in a double covering of the plane with two branch points, equipped with the Euclidean metric. We show that the scattering channels are open in the sense of arXiv:1202.0333 and that this property is stable under suitable perturbations of the metric.

Locality of the heat kernel on metric measure spaces

We will discuss what it means for a general heat kernel on a metric measure space to be local. We show that the Wiener measure associated to Brownian motion is local. Next we show that locality of the Wiener measure plus a suitable decay bound of the heat kernel implies locality of the heat kernel. We define a class of metric spaces we call manifold-like that satisfy the prerequisites for these theorems. This class includes Riemannian manifolds, metric graphs, products and some quotients of these as well as a number of more singular spaces. There exists a natural Dirichlet form based on the Laplacian on manifold-like spaces and we show that the associated Wiener measure and heat kernel are both local. These results unify and generalise facts known for manifolds and metric graphs. They provide a useful tool for computing heat kernel asymptotics for a large class of metric spaces. As an application we compute the heat kernel asymptotics for two identical particles living on a metric graph.

On a generalisation of Krein's example

We generalise a classical example given by Krein in 1953. We compute the difference of the resolvents and the difference of the spectral projections explicitly. We further give a full description of the unitary invariants, i.e., of the spectrum and the multiplicity. Moreover, we observe a link between the difference of the spectral projections and Hankel operators.

Abstract graph-like space and vector-valued metric graphs

In this note we present some abstract ideas how one can construct spaces from building blocks according to a graph. The coupling is expressed via boundary pairs, and can be applied to very different spaces such as discrete graphs, quantum graphs or graph-like manifolds. We show a spectral analysis of graph-like spaces, and consider as a special case vector-valued quantum graphs. Moreover, we provide a prototype of a convergence theorem for shrinking graph-like spaces with Dirichlet boundary conditions. (Dedicated to Pavel Exner's 70th birthday)

Frustration index and Cheeger inequalities for discrete and continuous magnetic Laplacians

We discuss a Cheeger constant as a mixture of the frustration index and the expansion rate, and prove the related Cheeger inequalities and higher order Cheeger inequalities for graph Laplacians with cyclic signatures, discrete magnetic Laplacians on finite graphs and magnetic Laplacians on closed Riemannian manifolds. In this process, we develop spectral clustering algorithms for partially oriented graphs and multi-way spectral clustering algorithms via metrics in lens spaces and complex projective spaces. As a byproduct, we give a unified viewpoint of Harary's structural balance theory of signed graphs and the gauge invariance of magnetic potentials.

Boundary pairs associated with quadratic forms

We introduce an abstract framework for elliptic boundary value problems in a variational form. Given a non-negative quadratic form in a Hilbert space, a boundary pair consists of a bounded operator, the boundary operator, and an auxiliary Hilbert space, the boundary space, such that the boundary operator is bounded from the quadratic form domain into the auxiliary Hilbert space. These data determine a Neumann and Dirichlet operator, a Dirichlet solution and a Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator. The basic example we have in mind is a manifold with boundary, where the quadratic form is the integral over the squared derivative, and the boundary map is the restriction of a function to (a subset of) the boundary of the manifold. As one of the main theorems, we derive a resolvent formula relating the difference of the resolvents of the Neumann and Dirichlet operator with the Dirichlet solution and the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator. From this, we deduce a spectral characterisation for a point being in the spectrum of the Neumann operator in terms of the family of Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators. The relation can be generalised also to Robin-type boundary conditions. We identify conditions expressed purely in terms of boundary pairs, which allow us to relate our concept with existing concepts such as boundary triples. We illustrate the theory by many examples including Jacobi operators, Laplacians on spaces with (non-smooth) boundary and the Zaremba (mixed boundary conditions) problem.

Asymptotic behaviour of the Hodge Laplacian spectrum on graph-like manifolds

We consider a family of compact, oriented and connected Riemannian manifolds shrinking to a metric graph and describe the asymptotic behaviour of the eigenvalues of the Hodge Laplacian. We apply our results to produce manifolds with spectral gaps of arbitrarily large size in the spectrum of the Hodge Laplacian.

On Open Scattering Channels for Manifolds with Ends

In the framework of time-dependent geometric scattering theory, we study the existence and completeness of the wave operators for perturbations of the Riemannian metric for the Laplacian on a complete manifold of dimension $n$. The smallness condition for the perturbation is expressed (intrinsically and coordinate free) in purely geometric terms using the harmonic radius; therefore, the size of the perturbation can be controlled in terms of local bounds on the injectivity radius and the Ricci-curvature. As an application of these ideas we obtain a stability result for the scattering matrix with respect to perturbations of the Riemannian metric. This stability result implies that a scattering channel which interacts with other channels preserves this property under small perturbations.

Path integrals and the essential self-adjointness of differential operators on noncompact manifolds

We consider Schrödinger operators on possibly noncompact Riemannian manifolds, acting on sections in vector bundles, with locally square integrable potentials whose negative part is in the underlying Kato class. Using path integral methods, we prove that under geodesic completeness these differential operators are essentially self-adjoint on the space of smooth functions with compact support, and that the corresponding operator closures are semibounded from below. These results apply to nonrelativistic Pauli-Dirac operators that describe the energy of Hydrogen type atoms on Riemannian 3-manifolds.

Convergence of sectorial operators on varying Hilbert space

Convergence of operators acting on a given Hilbert space is an old and well studied topic in operator theory. The idea of introducing a related notion for operators acting on arying spaces is natural. However, it seems that the first results in this direction have been obtained only recently, to the best of our knowledge. Here we consider sectorial operators on scales of Hilbert spaces. We define a notion of convergence that generalises convergence of the resolvents in operator norm to the case when the operators act on different spaces and show that this kind of convergence is compatible with the functional calculus of the operator and moreover implies convergence of the spectrum. Finally, we present examples for which this convergence can be checked, including convergence of coefficients of parabolic problems. Convergence of a manifold (roughly speaking consisting of thin tubes) towards the manifold's skeleton graph plays a prominent role, being our main application.

A general approximation of quantum graph vertex couplings by scaled Schroedinger operators on thin branched manifolds

We demonstrate that any self-adjoint coupling in a quantum graph vertex can be approximated by a family of magnetic Schroedinger operators on a tubular network built over the graph. If such a manifold has a boundary, Neumann conditions are imposed at it. The procedure involves a local change of graph topology in the vicinity of the vertex; the approximation scheme constructed on the graph is subsequently `lifted' to the manifold. For the corresponding operator a norm-resolvent convergence is proved, with the natural identification map, as the tube diameters tend to zero.

Continuity of the integrated density of states on random length metric graphs

We establish several properties of the integrated density of states for random quantum graphs: Under appropriate ergodicity and amenability assumptions, the integrated density of states can be defined using an exhaustion procedure by compact subgraphs. A trace per unit volume formula holds, similarly as in the Euclidean case. Our setting includes periodic graphs. For a model where the edge length are random and vary independently in a smooth way we prove a Wegner estimate and related regularity results for the integrated density of states. These results are illustrated for an example based on the Kagome lattice. In the periodic case we characterise all compactly supported eigenfunctions and calculate the position and size of discontinuities of the integrated density of states.

Approximation of quantum graph vertex couplings by scaled Schrödinger operators on thin branched manifolds

We discuss approximations of vertex couplings of quantum graphs using families of thin branched manifolds. We show that if a Neumann type Laplacian on such manifolds is amended by suitable potentials, the resulting Schrödinger operators can approximate non-trivial vertex couplings. The latter include not only the delta-couplings but also those with wavefunctions discontinuous at the vertex. We work out the example of the symmetric delta'-couplings and conjecture that the same method can be applied to all couplings invariant with respect to the time reversal.

Anderson Localization for radial tree-like random quantum graphs

We prove that certain random models associated with radial, tree-like, rooted quantum graphs exhibit Anderson localization at all energies. The two main examples are the random length model (RLM) and the random Kirchhoff model (RKM). In the RLM, the lengths of each generation of edges form a family of independent, identically distributed random variables (iid). For the RKM, the iid random variables are associated with each generation of vertices and moderate the current flow through the vertex. We consider extensions to various families of decorated graphs and prove stability of localization with respect to decoration. In particular, we prove Anderson localization for the random necklace model.

Gaps in the differential forms spectrum on cyclic coverings

We are interested in the spectrum of the Hodge-de Rham operator on a cyclic covering $X$ over a compact manifold $M$ of dimension $n+1$. Let $Σ$ be a hypersurface in $M$ which does not disconnect $M$ and such that $M-Σ$ is a fundamental domain of the covering. If the cohomology group $H^{n/2 (Σ)$ is trivial, we can construct for each $N \in \N$ a metric $g=g_N$ on $M$, such that the Hodge-de Rham operator on the covering $(X,g)$ has at least $N$ gaps in its (essential) spectrum. If $H^{n/2}(Σ) \ne 0$, the same statement holds true for the Hodge-de Rham operators on $p$-forms provided $p \notin \{n/2,n/2+1\}$.

Eigenvalue bracketing for discrete and metric graphs

We develop eigenvalue estimates for the Laplacians on discrete and metric graphs using different types of boundary conditions at the vertices of the metric graph. Via an explicit correspondence of the equilateral metric and discrete graph spectrum (also in the ``exceptional'' values of the metric graph corresponding to the Dirichlet spectrum) we carry over these estimates from the metric graph Laplacian to the discrete case. We apply the results to covering graphs and present examples where the covering graph Laplacians have spectral gaps.

Spectral analysis of metric graphs and related spaces

The aim of the present article is to give an overview of spectral theory on metric graphs guided by spectral geometry on discrete graphs and manifolds. We present the basic concept of metric graphs and natural Laplacians acting on it and explicitly allow infinite graphs. Motivated by the general form of a Laplacian on a metric graph, we define a new type of combinatorial Laplacian. With this generalised discrete Laplacian, it is possible to relate the spectral theory on discrete and metric graphs. Moreover, we describe a connection of metric graphs with manifolds. Finally, we comment on Cheeger's inequality and trace formulas for metric and discrete (generalised) Laplacians.
