Fractional and Complex Pseudo-Splines and the Construction of Parseval Frames

Pseudo-splines of integer order $(m,\ell)$ were introduced by Daubechies, Han, Ron, and Shen as a family which allows interpolation between the classical B-splines and the Daubechies' scaling functions. The purpose of this paper is to generalize the pseudo-splines to fractional and complex orders $(z, \ell)$ with $α:=\re z > 1$. This allows increased flexibility in regard to smoothness: instead of working with a discrete family of functions from $C^m$, $m\in \N_0$, one uses a \emph{continuous} family of functions belonging to the Hölder spaces $C^{α-1}$. The presence of the imaginary part of $z$ allows for direct utilization in complex transform techniques for signal and image analyses. We also show that in analogue to the integer case, the generalized pseudo-splines lead to constructions of Parseval wavelet frames via the unitary extension principle.

On the Gabor frame set for compactly supported continuous functions

We identify a class of continuous compactly supported functions for which the known part of the Gabor frame set can be extended. At least for functions with support on an interval of length two, the curve determining the set touches the known obstructions. Easy verifiable sufficient conditions for a function to belong to the class are derived, and it is shown that the B-splines $B_N, N\ge 2,$ as well as certain "continuous and truncated" versions of several classical functions (e.g., the Gaussian and the two-sided exponential function) belong to the class. The sufficient conditions for the frame property guarantees the existence of a dual window with a prescribed size of the support.

On partition of unities generated by entire functions and Gabor frames in $\ltrd$ and $\ell^2(\mzd)$

We characterize the entire functions $P$ of $d$ variables, $d\ge 2,$ for which the $\mzd$-translates of $Pχ_{[0,N]^d}$ satisfy the partition of unity for some $N\in \mn.$ In contrast to the one-dimensional case, these entire functions are not necessarily periodic. In the case where $P$ is a trigonometric polynomial, we characterize the maximal smoothness of $Pχ_{[0,N]^d},$ as well as the function that achieves it. A number of especially attractive constructions are achieved, e.g., of trigonometric polynomials leading to any desired (finite) regularity for a fixed support size. As an application we obtain easy constructions of matrix-generated Gabor frames in $\ltrd,$ with small support and high smoothness. By sampling this yields dual pairs of finite Gabor frames in $\ell^2(\mzd).$

On various R-duals and the duality principle

The duality principle states that a Gabor system is a frame if and only if the corresponding adjoint Gabor system is a Riesz sequence. In general Hilbert spaces and without the assumption of any particular structure, Casazza, Kutyniok and Lammers have introduced the so-called R-duals that also lead to a characterization of frames in terms of associated Riesz sequences; however, it is still an open question whether this abstract theory is a generalization of the duality principle. In this paper we prove that a modified version of the R-duals leads to a generalization of the duality principle that keeps all the attractive properties of the R-duals. In order to provide extra insight into the relations between a given sequence and its R-duals, we characterize all the types of R-duals that are available in the literature for the special case where the underlying sequence is a Riesz basis.

On Gabor frames generated by sign-changing windows and B-splines

For a class of compactly supported windows we characterize the frame property for a Gabor system $\mts,$ for translation parameters $a$ belonging to a certain range depending on the support size. We show that the obstructions to the frame property are located on a countable number of "curves." For functions that are positive on the interior of the support these obstructions do not appear, and the considered region in the $(a,b)$ plane is fully contained in the frame set. In particular this confirms a recent conjecture about B-splines by Gröchenig in that particular region. We prove that the full conjecture is true if it can be proved in a certain "hyperbolic strip."

On R-duals and the duality principle in Gabor analysis

The concept of R-duals of a frame was introduced by Casazza, Kutyniok and Lammers in 2004, with the motivation to obtain a general version of the duality principle in Gabor analysis. For tight Gabor frames and Gabor Riesz bases the three authors were actually able to show that the duality principle is a special case of general results for R-duals. In this paper we introduce various alternative R-duals, with focus on what we call R-duals of type II and III. We show how they are related and provide characterizations of the R-duals of type II and III. In particular, we prove that for tight frames these classes coincide with the R-duals by Casazza et el., which is desirable in the sense that the motivating case of tight Gabor frames already is well covered by these R-duals. On the other hand, all the introduced types of R-duals generalize the duality principle for larger classes of Gabor frames than just the tight frames and the Riesz bases; in particular, the R-duals of type III cover the duality principle for all Gabor frames.

Directional time frequency analysis via continuous frame

Grafakos and Sansing \cite{GS} have shown how to obtain directionally sensitive time-frequency decompositions in $L^2(\mr^n)$ based on Gabor systems in $\ltr;$ the key tool is the "ridge idea," which lifts a function of one variable to a function of several variables. We generalize their result by showing that similar results hold starting with general frames for $L^2(\mr),$ both in the setting of discrete frames and continuous frames. This allows to apply the theory for several other classes of frames, e.g., wavelet frames and shift-invariant systems. We will consider applications to the Meyer wavelet and complex B-splines. In the special case of wavelet systems we show how to discretize the representations using $ε$-nets.

On extensions of wavelet systems to dual pairs of frames

It is an open problem whether any pair of Bessel sequences with wavelet structure can be extended to a pair of dual frames by adding a pair of singly generated wavelet systems. We consider the particular case where the given wavelet systems are generated by the multiscale setup with trigonometric masks and provide a positive answer under extra assumptions. We also identify a number of conditions that are necessary for the extension to dual multiscale wavelet frames with any number of generators, and show that they imply that an extension with two pairs of wavelet systems is possible. Along the way we provide examples showing that extensions to dual frame pairs are attractive because they often allow better properties than the more popular extensions to tight frames.

On entire functions restricted to intervals, partition of unities, and dual Gabor frames

Partition of unities appear in many places in analysis. Typically they are generated by compactly supported functions with a certain regularity. In this paper we consider partition of unities obtained as integer-translates of entire functions restricted to finite intervals. We characterize the entire functions that lead to a partition of unity in this way, and we provide characterizations of the "cut-off" entire functions, considered as functions of a real variable, to have desired regularity. In particular we obtain partition of unities generated by functions with small support and desired regularity. Applied to Gabor analysis this leads to constructions of dual pairs of Gabor frames with low redundancy, generated by trigonometric polynomials with small support and desired regularity.

Six problems in frame theory

We discuss various problems in frame theory that have been open for some years. A short discussion of frame theory is also provided, but it only contains the information that is necessary in order to understand the open problems and their role.

Approximately dual frame pairs in Hilbert spaces and applications to Gabor frames

We discuss the concepts of pseudo-dual frames and approximately dual frames, and illuminate their relationship to classical frames. Approximately dual frames are easier to construct than the classical dual frames, and might be tailored to yield almost perfect reconstruction. For approximately dual frames constructed via perturbation theory, we provide a bound on the deviation from perfect reconstruction. An alternative bound is derived for the rich class of Gabor frames, by using the Walnut representation of the frame operator to estimate the deviation from equality in the duality conditions. As illustration of the results, we construct explicit approximate duals of Gabor frames generated by the Gaussian; these approximate duals yield almost perfect reconstruction. Amazingly, the method applies also to certain Gabor frames that are far from being tight.

Perturbations of Weyl-Heisenberg frames

We develop a usable perturbation theory for Weyl-Heisenberg frames. In particular, we prove that if $(E_{mb}T_{na}g)_{m,n\inmathbb Z}$ is a WH-frame and $h$ is a function which is close to $g$ in the Wiener Amalgam space norm, then $(E_{mb}T_{na}h)_{m,n\in \mathbb Z}$ is also a WH-frame.

Weyl-Heisenberg Frames, Translation Invariant Systems and the Walnut Representation

We present a comprehensive analysis of the convergence properties of the frame operators of Weyl-Heisenberg systems and shift-invariant systems, and relate these to the convergence of the Walnut representation. We give a deep analysis of necessary conditions and sufficient conditions for convergence of the frame operator. We show that symmetric, norm and unconditional convergence of the Walnut series are all different, but that weak and norm convergence are the same, while there are WH-systems for which the Walnut representation has none of these convergence properties. We make a detailed study of the CC-Condition (a sufficient condition for WH-systems to have finite upper frame bounds), and show that (for ab rational) a uniform version of this passes to the Wexler-Raz dual. We also show that a condition of Tolimieri and Orr implies the uniform CC-Condition. We obtain stronger results in the case when (g,a,b) is a WH-system and ab is rational. For example, if ab is rational, then the CC-Condition becomes equivalent to the unconditional convergence of the Walnut representation - even in a more general setting. Many of the results are generalized to shift-invariant systems. We give classifications for numerous important classes of WH-systems including: (1) The WH-systems for which the frame operator extends to a bounded operator on L^p(R), 1\leq p; (2) The WH-systems for which the frame operator extends to a bounded operator on the Wiener amalgam space; (3) The families of frames which have the same frame operator.

Classifying Tight Weyl-Heisenberg Frames

A Weyl-Heisenberg frame for L^2(R) is a frame consisting of translates and modulates of a fixed function. In this paper we give necessary and sufficient conditions for this family to form a tight WH-frame. This allows us to write down explicitly all functions g for which all translates and modulates of g form an orthonormal basis for L^2(R). There are a number of consequences of this classification, including a simple direct classification of the alternate dual frames to a WH-frame (A result originally due to Janssen).

Frames of translates

We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a subfamily of regularly spaced translates of a function to form a frame (resp. a Riesz basis) for its span. One consequence is that ifthetranslates are taken only from a subset of the natural numbers, then this family is a frame if and only if it is a Riesz basis. We also consider arbitrary sequences of translates and show that for sparse sets, having an upper frame bound is equivalent to the family being a frame sequence. Finally, we use the fractional Hausdorff dimension to identify classes of exact frame sequences.

Weyl-Heisenberg frames for subspaces of L^2(R)

We give sufficient conditions for translates and modulates of a function g in L^2(R) to be a frame for its closed linear span. Even in the case where this family spans all of L^2(R), wou conditions are significantly weaker than the previous known conditions.

Hilbert space frames containing a Riesz basis and Banach spaces which have no subspace isomorphic to $c_0$

We prove that a Hilbert space frame $\fti$ contains a Riesz basis if every subfamily $\ftj , J \subseteq I ,$ is a frame for its closed span. Secondly we give a new characterization of Banach spaces which do not have any subspace isomorphic to $c_0$. This result immediately leads to an improvement of a recent theorem of Holub concerning frames consisting of a Riesz basis plus finitely many elements.

Frames containing a Riesz basis and preservation of this property under perturbation

Aldroubi has shown how one can construct any frame $\gtu$ starting with one frame $\ftu $,using a bounded operator $U$ on $l^2(N)$. We study the overcompleteness of the frames in terms of properties of $U$. We also discuss perturbation of frames in the sense that two frames are ``close'' if a certain operator is compact. In this way we obtain an equivalence relation with the property that members of the same equivalence class have the same overcompleteness. On the other hand we show that perturbation in the Paley-Wiener sense does not have this property. \\ Finally we construct a frame which is norm-bounded below, but which does not contain a Riesz basis. The construction is based on the delicate difference between the unconditional convergence of the frame representation, and the fact that a convergent series in the frame elements need not converge unconditionally.
