Pseudomoments of the Riemann zeta function

The $2$kth pseudomoments of the Riemann zeta function $ζ(s)$ are, following Conrey and Gamburd, the $2k$th integral moments of the partial sums of $ζ(s)$ on the critical line. For fixed $k>1/2$, these moments are known to grow like $(\log N)^{k^2}$, where $N$ is the length of the partial sum, but the true order of magnitude remains unknown when $k\le 1/2$. We deduce new Hardy--Littlewood inequalities and apply one of them to improve on an earlier asymptotic estimate when $k\to\infty$. In the case $k<1/2$, we consider pseudomoments of $ζ^α(s)$ for $α>1$ and the question of whether the lower bound $(\log N)^{k^2α^2}$ known from earlier work yields the true growth rate. Using ideas from recent work of Harper, Nikeghbali, and Radziwi{łł} and some probabilistic estimates of Harper, we obtain the somewhat unexpected result that these pseudomements are bounded below by $\log N$ to a power larger than $k^2α^2$ when $k<1/e$ and $N$ is sufficiently large.

Contractive inequalities for Hardy spaces

We state and discuss several interrelated results, conjectures, and questions regarding contractive inequalities for classical $H^p$ spaces of the unit disc. We study both coefficient estimates in terms of weighted $\ell^2$ sums and the Riesz projection viewed as a map from $L^q$ to $H^p$ with $q\ge p$. Some numerical evidence is given that supports our conjectures.

Sharp norm estimates for composition operators and Hilbert-type inequalities

Let $\mathscr{H}^2$ denote the Hardy space of Dirichlet series $f(s) = \sum_{n\geq1} a_n n^{-s}$ with square summable coefficients and suppose that $φ$ is a symbol generating a composition operator on $\mathscr{H}^2$ by $\mathscr{C}_φ(f) = f \circ φ$. Let $ζ$ denote the Riemann zeta function and $α_0=1.48\ldots$ the unique positive solution of the equation $αζ(1+α)=2$. We obtain sharp upper bounds for the norm of $\mathscr{C}_φ$ on $\mathscr{H}^2$ when $0<\operatorname{Re}φ(+\infty)-1/2 \leq α_0$, by relating such sharp upper bounds to the best constant in a family of discrete Hilbert-type inequalities.

Contractive inequalities for Bergman spaces and multiplicative Hankel forms

We consider sharp inequalities for Bergman spaces of the unit disc, establishing analogues of the inequality in Carleman's proof of the isoperimetric inequality and of Weissler's inequality for dilations. By contractivity and a standard tensorization procedure, the unit disc inequalities yield corresponding inequalities for the Bergman spaces of Dirichlet series. We use these results to study weighted multiplicative Hankel forms associated with the Bergman spaces of Dirichlet series, reproducing most of the known results on multiplicative Hankel forms associated with the Hardy spaces of Dirichlet series. In addition, we find a direct relationship between the two type of forms which does not exist in lower dimensions. Finally, we produce some counter-examples concerning Carleson measures on the infinite polydisc.

Volterra operators on Hardy spaces of Dirichlet series

For a Dirichlet series symbol $g(s) = \sum_{n \geq 1} b_n n^{-s}$, the associated Volterra operator $\mathbf{T}_g$ acting on a Dirichlet series $f(s)=\sum_{n\ge 1} a_n n^{-s}$ is defined by the integral $f\mapsto -\int_{s}^{+\infty} f(w)g'(w)\,dw$. We show that $\mathbf{T}_g$ is a bounded operator on the Hardy space $\mathcal{H}^p$ of Dirichlet series with $0 < p < \infty$ if and only if the symbol $g$ satisfies a Carleson measure condition. When appropriately restricted to one complex variable, our condition coincides with the standard Carleson measure characterization of ${\operatorname{BMOA}}(\mathbb{D})$. A further analogy with classical ${\operatorname{BMO}}$ is that $\exp(c|g|)$ is integrable (on the infinite polytorus) for some $c > 0$ whenever $\mathbf{T}_g$ is bounded. In particular, such $g$ belong to $\mathcal{H}^p$ for every $p < \infty$. We relate the boundedness of $\mathbf{T}_g$ to several other ${\operatorname{BMO}}$ type spaces: ${\operatorname{BMOA}}$ in half-planes, the dual of $\mathcal{H}^1$, and the space of symbols of bounded Hankel forms. Moreover, we study symbols whose coefficients enjoy a multiplicative structure and obtain coefficient estimates for $m$-homogeneous symbols as well as for general symbols. Finally, we consider the action of $\mathbf{T}_g$ on reproducing kernels for appropriate sequences of subspaces of $\mathcal{H}^2$. Our proofs employ function and operator theoretic techniques in one and several variables; a variety of number theoretic arguments are used throughout the paper in our study of special classes of symbols $g$.

Weak product spaces of Dirichlet series

Let $\mathscr{H}^2$ denote the space of ordinary Dirichlet series with square summable coefficients, and let $\mathscr{H}^2_0$ denote its subspace consisting of series vanishing at $+\infty$. We investigate the weak product spaces $\mathscr{H}^2\odot\mathscr{H}^2$ and $\mathscr{H}^2_0\odot\mathscr{H}^2_0$, finding that several pertinent problems are more tractable for the latter space. This surprising phenomenon is related to the fact that $\mathscr{H}^2_0\odot\mathscr{H}^2_0$ does not contain the infinite-dimensional subspace of $\mathscr{H}^2$ of series which lift to linear functions on the infinite polydisc. The problems considered stem from questions about the dual spaces of these weak product spaces, and are therefore naturally phrased in terms of multiplicative Hankel forms. We show that there are bounded, even Schatten class, multiplicative Hankel forms on $\mathscr{H}^2_0 \times \mathscr{H}^2_0$ whose analytic symbols are not in $\mathscr{H}^2$. Based on this result we examine Nehari's theorem for such Hankel forms. We define also the skew product spaces associated with $\mathscr{H}^2\odot\mathscr{H}^2$ and $\mathscr{H}^2_0\odot\mathscr{H}^2_0$, with respect to both half-plane and polydisc differentiation, the latter arising from Bohr's point of view. In the process we supply square function characterizations of the Hardy spaces $\mathscr{H}^p$, for $0 < p < \infty$, from the viewpoints of both types of differentiation. Finally we compare the skew product spaces to the weak product spaces, leading naturally to an interesting Schur multiplier problem.

The multiplicative Hilbert matrix

It is observed that the infinite matrix with entries $(\sqrt{mn}\log (mn))^{-1}$ for $m, n\ge 2$ appears as the matrix of the integral operator $\mathbf{H}f(s):=\int_{1/2}^{+\infty}f(w)(ζ(w+s)-1)dw$ with respect to the basis $(n^{-s})_{n\ge 2}$; here $ζ(s)$ is the Riemann zeta function and $H$ is defined on the Hilbert space ${\mathcal H}^2_0$ of Dirichlet series vanishing at $+\infty$ and with square-summable coefficients. This infinite matrix defines a multiplicative Hankel operator according to Helson's terminology or, alternatively, it can be viewed as a bona fide (small) Hankel operator on the infinite-dimensional torus ${\Bbb T}^{\infty}$. By analogy with the standard integral representation of the classical Hilbert matrix, this matrix is referred to as the multiplicative Hilbert matrix. It is shown that its norm equals $π$ and that it has a purely continuous spectrum which is the interval $[0,π]$; these results are in agreement with known facts about the classical Hilbert matrix. It is shown that the matrix $(m^{1/p} n^{(p-1)/p}\log (mn))^{-1}$ has norm $π/\sin(π/p)$ when acting on $\ell^p$ for $1<p<\infty$. However, the multiplicative Hilbert matrix fails to define a bounded operator on ${\mathcal H}^p_0$ for $p\neq 2$, where ${\mathcal H}^p_0$ are $H^p$ spaces of Dirichlet series. It remains an interesting problem to decide whether the analytic symbol $\sum_{n\ge 2} (\log n)^{-1} n^{-s-1/2}$ of the multiplicative Hilbert matrix arises as the Riesz projection of a bounded function on the infinite-dimensional torus ${\Bbb T}^\infty$.

Failure of Nehari's Theorem for Multiplicative Hankel Forms in Schatten Classes

Ortega-Cerdà -- Seip demonstrated that there are bounded multiplicative Hankel forms which do not arise from bounded symbols. On the other hand, when such a form is in the Hilbert-Schmidt class $\mathcal{S}_2$, Helson showed that it has a bounded symbol. The present work investigates forms belonging to the Schatten classes between these two cases. It is shown that for every $p>(1-\logπ/\log{4})^{-1}$ there exist multiplicative Hankel forms in the Schatten class $\mathcal{S}_p$ which lack bounded symbols. The lower bound on $p$ is in a certain sense optimal when the symbol of the multiplicative Hankel form is a product of homogeneous linear polynomials.

Composition Operators on Bohr-Bergman Spaces of Dirichlet Series

For $α\in \mathbb{R}$, let $\mathscr{D}_α$ denote the scale of Hilbert spaces consisting of Dirichlet series $f(s) = \sum_{n=1}^\infty a_n n^{-s}$ that satisfy $\sum_{n=1}^\infty |a_n|^2/[d(n)]^α< \infty$. The Gordon--Hedenmalm Theorem on composition operators for $\mathscr{H}^2=\mathscr{D}_0$ is extended to the Bergman case $α>0$. These composition operators are generated by functions of the form $Φ(s) = c_0 s + φ(s)$, where $c_0$ is a nonnegative integer and $φ(s)$ is a Dirichlet series with certain convergence and mapping properties. For the operators with $c_0=0$ a new phenomenon is discovered: If $0 < α< 1$, the space $\mathscr{D}_α$ is mapped by the composition operator into a smaller space in the same scale. When $α> 1$, the space $\mathscr{D}_α$ is mapped into a larger space in the same scale. Moreover, a partial description of the composition operators on the Dirichlet--Bergman spaces $\mathscr{A}^p$ for $1 \leq p < \infty$ are obtained, in addition to new partial results for composition operators on the Dirichlet--Hardy spaces $\mathscr{H}^p$ when $p$ is an odd integer.

Compact composition operators with non-linear symbols on the $H^2$ space of Dirichlet series

We investigate the compactness of composition operators on the Hardy space of Dirichlet series induced by a map $φ(s)=c_0s+φ_0(s)$, where $φ_0$ is a Dirichlet polynomial. Our results depend heavily on the characteristic $c_0$ of $φ$ and, when $c_0=0$, on both the degree of $φ_0$ and its local behaviour near a boundary point. We also study the approximation numbers for some of these operators. Our methods involve geometric estimates of Carleson measures and tools from differential geometry.

Zeros of functions in Bergman-type Hilbert spaces of Dirichlet Series

For a real number $α$ the Hilbert spaces $\mathscr{D}_α$ consists of those Dirichlet series $\sum_{n=1}^\infty a_n/n^s$ for which $\sum_{n=1}^\infty |a_n|^2/[d(n)]^α< \infty$, where $d(n)$ denotes the number of divisors of $n$. We extend a theorem of Seip on the bounded zero sequences of functions in $\mathscr{D}_α$ to the case $α>0$. Generalizations to other weighted spaces of Dirichlet series are also discussed, as are partial results on the zeros of functions in the Hardy spaces of Dirichlet series $\mathscr{H}^p$, for $1\leq p <2$.

On the Sidon Constant for Dirichlet Polynomials

We estimate the error term in the asymptotic formula of the Sidon constant for (ordinary) Dirichlet polynomials by providing explicit lower and upper bounds. The lower bound is already implicitly known, but we supply the necessary computations to make it explicit. The upper bound is improved by a factor of $\log\log\log{x}/\sqrt{\log\log{x}}$.
